After listening to this whole three part series I can definitively say I am grateful to have instructors and professors that have experience in the animation and gaming industry. Not only do i live in Los Angeles but my professors have some of the biggest connections to directors and other professionals. I will try and take all of this helpful advice and apply it to my own work. I have even completely revamped my portfolio because of this podcast. Thank you for all your insightful knowledge Feng!

Hey, Feng! There's still one thing that I would like to hear you talking about. I hope you can answer on a Q&A episode. When freelancing, what's the standard on the industry for paying time? Do you get paid before the job or after it? Or do you get half the money at the start, and the other half later? Thanks a lot for this podcast, man! So much helpful!

@ 38:40 for sake of accuracy the month has 20-22 working days not 30. The more senior you get the more you're able to not have to work on weekends and you also are at that age where you have a family to be with.

Hi, I've been following fzd ever since I started my studies 5 years ago. I've now finally entered the industry about 4 months ago but something amazing has happened to me, after roughly 2 months I got the opportunity to become art supervisor. The art director is in Poland, they needed someone here to understand his vision better and help person to person with the people here and I seemed to be at the right place at the right time. I'm just not sure where to go from here, I feel I'm missing 5 - 10 years of experience and knowledge, but I do have that in people skills, working with a team etc... My question would be:" how do I now profile myself? What do I do with the money I ask (I got a 30% raise with the new position)?" Anyway, I'll find my way around and I'll keep listening. Thank you for all the help during these years! :)

these 4 part videos are really helpful getting to know how the industry operates. Some of the life experience tips are very humble and I appreciate you sharing them! The only regret I have is that I never step foot into this field when I was much younger like you did....Now that I'm an old man....trying to do what young bloods are doing, I always feel bad about it!

Thank you, this was very good information! A few things you mentioned probably WOULD have hung me up if I was unaware. Now if I break in, I'll be far more comfortable taking the hit from my cozy salary for that first design job. If I hadn't heard this, I'd have been skeptical of my life choice for a career change. Also very good cautionary information; I'll be sure to speed up my process before I even attempt that break in. It seems the industry is too reliant on first impressions to make it worth just taking a shot in the dark. I will be ready first. Truly, excellent information. Thank you.

@slathas9 жыл бұрын
+GuardianO Face What exactly do you mean by more High definition? You could increase the resolution? Everything else would depend on your painting skills. Details avoiding the use of muddy colors and so on.

So i currently use traditional media and a digital display tablet to make my art, but my tablet stopped working! I only have enough money to afford an intous pro medium, is it hard to switch from traditional to an intous? or is it just adapting to form better hand-eye coordination?

Could you please talk about the appropriate way to apply to companies as a freelancer? For example, if I look at the job openings for 3D artists at Ubisoft, I can see that there is an opening in Singapore and I can select to apply for that particular position, but what if I just want to apply for that position as a freelancer? What is the correct way of going about it? Thank you for your time.

Hi Feng, Thanks for a great Design Cinema!!! I have a question. I am Senior 3D Environment Artist working in Games Industry for ~8 yrs. I am thinking of switching my career path to becoming a concept artist. Eventually I want to start my own small studio. Design new worlds and characters and tell great stories. I am trapped into being a 3D artist. How can I switch my career? Build my concept art portfolio and apply as a intern concept artist? How can I make that transition? I need your guidance.

Feng this is Eric, I was in FZD(2013 Summer) for 2 terms, I left because I wasn't good enough to survive the training... now my problem is I have an in-house game artist(both 2d/3d) job in Taiwan for a year now, I'm happy about the environment here, also I learned (still learning) a ton here... but... the salary here is pathetic (around 1000 USD per month) and there's no future if I need to live a good life... Can you give me advices should I aim for western game companies? But the culture and art style are so different, English isn't my problem, just I'm not sure if western game companies would accept foreigners...what would you do if you are me? Thanks... I really need some help because I have a family to feed... :( They would go anywhere I go though.

+Eric Wu I feel you man. I'm working for a board game company and I'm just bringing in as much as I was as a Barista. Depressing but don't give up!
@NoxMoony8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Wu This is a tough phase, especially when you have a family to feed. But from what I've seen around the internet so far, if you're skilled companies won't mind hiring if you're a foreigner. A lot of artists from China and Korea (not American people of Asian descent) work at places like Blizzard or Riot. There's also many Indie studios that might match the kind of art style you specialise in. My two cents would be to try making a following online and get your art seen, it'll be easier to find opportunities that way. I wish ya all the best!!

fourstarbrazil I don't normally have a hour or two to dedicate towards watching a entire podcast. Only watch 4-5 movies every semester because of the time I have to commit to them. Watching podcasts while working sometimes is fine, but I don't retain as much information as I would normally, so I tend not to like multitasking this way. During vacations I am away from technology.

+Abaddon Drums that's what design cinema (which has 80-odd episodes) is all about. my only regret and i have the feeling that Feng and co. are on that page is what DrawCrowd is turning into. when Feng announced DrawCrowd, it was supposed to be a social network of illustrators and concept artists. a place where you can learn and share. and then, it has become a place where people compete about the sexiest anime girl. i hope this podcast will reset the record about what it means to be a concept artist. i am enjoying it so far.
