@FZD - i love your videos! i learned so much from them. Could you make a video or post a text with a full schedule for a 1 year self-taught training. Where to beging, what to do next. Just a rough schedule, like would you frist start with perspective or composition, would you start with anatomy or abstract body motion, would you start with value or proportion. things like that.
@ChrisReyCap8 жыл бұрын
heh. As much as I'd like him to do that, that's what his school is for. He does post curriculum in the FZD school website
@OlivioSarikas8 жыл бұрын
Chreyrem nice, i didn't see that. it's a very rough schedule however. He wouldn't really give anything away by showing a more detailed list, as it is just naming the exercises. His free lectures give a lot more away for free, than him saying "start with the general head shape and move on with the scull structure and muscles". The school itself is for live training with mentors by your side. that's what makes it worth all that money.

Fundamentals you need: 1. Perspective and forms: "How to Draw" by Scott Robertson. He also taught Feng Zhu 2. Anatomy: "Constructive anatomy" by Bridgman and "Figure Drawing" by Andrew Loomis (free book online at archive (dot) org) 3. "Color & Light" by James Gurney 4. "How to Render" by Scott Robertson Hope this helps. It takes a while to really master these and you don't have to complete one at a time, but you can do a few at once just as long as you're practicing and learning form them consistently.
@ChrisReyCap8 жыл бұрын
Omair Jamal Agree with you. I have all those books and I'm about to start on them one by one. According to scientific studies, the best way to learn is to do a variety. Of course, you can focus on one and master it, but according to the study, you learn much quicker switching off different subjects.

Hey Feng, for me, studying fundamentals and going down the path of the more technical sides of art is actually really, really easy (if time-consuming, and not really satisfying), but I am completely dry when it comes to thinking up new ideas, let alone designs. Drawing is really fun for me, but I have nothing to draw more than half the time, so I keep grinding the fundamentals. But that really isn't going to get me anywhere in terms of creativity. What could I do to bring _myself_ out there?
@sohrabroozbahani47008 жыл бұрын
i wonder how much of that is applicable in writing novels, that's what i do, writing Sci Fi novels, and now that i am preparing my first real presentable work for market, i really like to give it out with an art book or something. making up a space opera takes a lot of history and background and cultural preparation but the amount of visuality you can present by sole words is eventually limited.

Great video as always, something you said before that you see a lot of Portfolios that look more like Art than designs; when you were viewing them at a convention or something. What is the difference between Art and Design? I think I know, it's the philosophy but why are there articles saying Design is the same as Art? I study as a Fine Artist but I follow you and learn a lot about design. You design for a purpose so everyone gets it, us Fine Artists make Art for our own selfish purpose, and even if one person gets it we are happy. Even Video games are now being called Art, maybe that is why people think they can show you an Art portfolio and try to get into the design business? I don't know I am just trying to grasp the concept of the difference between what is good Art and what is good design; or if there is even a difference.
@richardmf65758 жыл бұрын
the thing with design is that it suppose to show us visually how some thing works. for example when designing a character for a game. the design would show what the characters looks like from every direction so a modeler can build it in 3d easy. in art or illustration you take that design and put it in a flashy compostion and a modeler woudnt be able to use most illustrations because it usually leaves out alot of information to build a model off it. i like to think of art as a very general thing. video games, music, and design is all considered art so because of that i think a better term to use for when feng hating the art portfolio thing is illustration and that people were doing illustration portfolios over design. art is very general term so i feel it is better to be a bit more specific when calling something art.

Hey Feng! It's the first time I'm posting here, but your post is incredibly timely. I currently have a new IP under development as a co-production between a Chinese entertainment investment firm and a UK production company. Right now, we are at the cusp of defining a visual identity for our property ... and one thing you state, which is really important, is that the script has to drive everything. One thought, though ... a key area of ROI is merchandising, and what my colleagues and I are doing (especially in terms of characters) is, not only grounding the design to make it easier to source elements, but also taking into consideration eventual toy designs as well (not only from an audience appeal point of view, but ease of manufacturing, etc.). I, personally, don't think it's taking on board too much (especially because we've done the blue sky thing already), but I was wondering what your take on it was? I'm currently finding it a bit of a struggle to "define our world/universe" and your video has helped reinforce quite a few very important points! Nice one. PS. Our whole concept department used to watch your stuff back when I was designing for EA (NFS Underground days). What you give back to the community is amazing, mate! All of us out here appreciate it!
@alkang13238 жыл бұрын
Also of note ... one thing I tend to do when sitting back and analyzing the pace of an IP (generally something that contains a sequential narrative - movie, tv, etc.) ... I'll do the timeline mapping (usually using Syd Field's paradigm), but I'll also map out Character highs/lows vs. Audience highs/lows. I find this really informative ... especially if you have a situation where a character is feeling really good about something (finally got that promotion) and the audience needs to feel bad about it (yeah, but you screwed a lot of people to get there). This helps inform my design process, in terms of creating heightened emotion for the character, but making it all negative for the audience.

That Was So Awesome Episode! After watching it I just want to jump into storyboard and test everything out on new small IP :D Breaking out the subject into small pieces really helps understand the meaning of each decision. Thanks for helpful tips :)

Hi Feng, I'm very new to concept art. My goal is to go to singapore and your school when I'm 19, but as of right now, how should I self teach myself concept art, I spend many hours each day digitally painting random stuff but I'm missing fundimentals. I struggle with characters, composition and the more technical side behind art. I also find filling a whole page difficult. I find myself say drawing a well, or a tree, individual things instead of a landscape as I really dont know where to start or what things should look like. Any advice on resources or online sites that teach well? Thanks
@polotrc8 жыл бұрын
don't give up, struggle ! For charcters i would recommend you to perfectly learn anatomy, that would help you to transform whatever you want on a human and make it creative, like ... for example : Hulk, or orcs from the Warcraft movie ! But for landscapes and stuff i still don't know, i'm in the same case like you, and i'm going for studies in Paris to learn that. Can't wait !

Paul Trochu See I havent done much research, are there other alternatives to FZD in other parts of the world. Like at the same kind of standard?
@polotrc8 жыл бұрын
Griffin GFX Actually, to enter FZD you need to be able to do some concept art : show a portfolio of your digital paintings. So you must have learned basics at school (learning alone could be a longer and difficult way). Make some research around your city, if it exists any schools of graphic art, game design, or so ... That would be helpful to enter FZD with a well worked portfolio. Maybe you can already apply to FZD with your digital arts ... nothing ventured, nothing gained ^^

To tell you the truth, i watched podcast episode 6, and realized, i need to plan out every single day, if i truly want to be an "artist". But then i also realized, "ok i practice 4-5-6-7 hours a day dephending on how much i can affort with a job on my back, but for how long? What do i practice, and till when? The usuall reply is the same : Practice the basics and fundamentals (line quality, basic shapes from any angle (good to do with perspective), make value study (good to do with life drawings) ect...Ok then, but lets say i do it for 3-4 years and thats like a 10 000 hours practice in drawing only (trough its a big topic with lots of sides, lets say you practiced all of it). And i say this 10k hours because it sounds nice, and some people say its the time you need to master anything (trough i find this a half truth). But how do i know EXACLY when to do what? I mean i still need to learn classic painting (i mean i feel like i should, its a thing an artist should or not?) lets say only for 2 years (considering you know the basics you only need to learn the tools and color ect...takes less time or not?) atleast to the basic level. Then you still need to make the switch to digital. I have so many questions about this topic. Can anyone redirect me to a better place to actually make a contact with someone more experianced or a pro?
@at52038 жыл бұрын
Is good that you take learning so serius but you need to tone it down a bit. You don't need to put a minimum time in learning, when you are talking about hours per day it's okay, but when it comes to a particular subject you "stop" (pass to the next thing) when you feel you are good enough to make what you want to make. Also, learning something you don't want to do for 2 years seems like a waste of time. It's good to start with traditional, but usually that just means doing your practices with pencil. If you want to paint in digital just start with that. Look at what the students of FZD do, that switch to digital pretty quickly.
@adonisg71388 жыл бұрын
From what a pro said to me it's, the quality not the quantity of how much practice your doing. Minimize the hours and make it more of a focus tier. Get the best out of the 2 hours or less. That's what I've been, since I am married, have a son, full-time job and also school is coming back again. I'm 29, so everything I do is focus and yes at some other times I have fun with my work to see where I am at.

As always, great video! I have a suggestion though, In the "Mood and Color" section woudn't the term opposite fit better than complimentary between blue and red?
@Swordticus8 жыл бұрын
When talking about color theory, opposite and complimentary pretty much mean the same thing. 2 colors that are opposites on the color wheel are complimentary. So from a design and painting sort of sense, I think complimentary would be the better term in this case.
@leleskine8 жыл бұрын
Oh, I didnt know that +Swordticus, thanks! But nevertheless, I was refering to the fact that blue isn't exactly the opposite to the red color on the color wheel, but in a sense of "feeling", hot and cold, those two colors can be considerated opposite. Do you get me? I'm being kinda picky here though!
@Swordticus8 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah yeah yeah I getcha! And you're right, the complimentary to red is green. The gist of it is the same. The movies starts from a warm color to a cold one or vice versa. It's debatable. Might just be better to say complimentary/opposite haha.

Feng, no need for a shirt that says abercrombie. Are you sponsored by them? Then why? Either go plain black or something w/ some cool artwork or an FZD School promo shirt. Literally anything but that pretty much. Also just my 2 cents but this new style of video is boring.
