"Star Fall," for clarinet and piano, begins in an unspecified key with a 4/4 meter. It was composed in 1978 and is a kind of a genre known as "program music". Program music is music inspired by a non-musical idea, often depicted in the title of the work. It is music associated with or illustrative of an event, story, scene or picture. It conveys an impression or implies an image or mood.
In this work, the tempi are a key element to its structure. There are three specific tempi presented, each increasing in speed and serving as an introduction to the next section. In the third, fastest section, a three part 'A-B-A' structure occurs with two very rhythmic sections set off by a middle lyrical section. This is followed by a return of the earlier two sections, bringing the piece back to its slow beginning. Melodic and rhythmical material is also associated with each tempo, making the piece a rounded and unified whole.

This recording was made for an archival purpose. It was recorded on the date of upload. As such, it was performed roughly 5 months after an exam. The work was performed along with a pre-recorded accompaniment. Due to the inability of the recorded accompaniment to respond to visual cues, the Cadenza was edited in.
