G Body El Camino Restomod Fuel System Part 4: Tank Install

In this video I will be installing the Doreman 22 gallon tank for EFI G Bodies. There is a difference between the tank strap insulators for the carbureted engines vs the EFI engines; the EFI engine fuel tank strap insulators are much thicker than the ones for the carbureted engines. This video will also show some of the challenges in dealing with mounting a new tank with new strap insulators.

What caused the struggle with the install? Too short of metal straps to begin with, or was the large bump on the top of the Dorman tank hitting the underside of the bed? I plan to be doing an EFI build on my 84 G body, but I have a different tank.

The large bump is standard on the El Camino tanks; it’s why the Monte Carlo and other g body sending units won’t work for the Elco. I believe what caused the issue is that the factory tank strap isolators for a carb’d 305 are paper thin (no electric fuel pump causing the need for thick isolators). I’m not sure if the actual tank straps themselves are bigger for an efi g body, to account for the thicker isolators.

I used the OEM style EFI unit for the 17 gallon tank; purchased from gbodyparts.com
