I saw Tanikawa play in Japan, when she was in high school. Her talent and skill were evident. She is a melding of Homare Sawa and Marta. In the 2024 Olympics, if Coach Ikeda, had used Momoko Tanikawa against the USA, it would have lifted the team to victory. The only player 'better' than Tanikawa, on Nadeshiko is Kumagai, but Kumagai is a defender. Momoko Tanikawa will become the greatest soccer player to arise out of Japan - Sawa was godsent and lifted the team to victory. Tanikawa has that talent. The 2011 Nadeshiko was laden with superb athletes and drive, led by Sawa, who in 2011 was the best soccer player in the world. Hopefully, Tanikawa will have the same opportunity. It is good that Coach Ikeda is gone; he failed to properly use Tanikawa, which was one element of his undoing. - Nadeshiko has been a trainwreck under Ikeda and Takakura. Former coach Sasaki, may need to step forward.

Tanikawa was not feeling well enough to play in the match against the United States. That was very unfortunate.
There was: Mana Iwabuchi, who Coach Ikeda failed to use properly, if at all. Same with former coach Takakura. She began to prosper as a teenager under Sasaki. Problem with Nadeshiko, post-Sasaki is orthodox, unimaginative coaching. And other than Iwabuchi and Tanikawa - an inability to score from distance.
