Honestly, I thought she had an abnormal amount of air running through her tone, and her runs were beautiful, but unsupported fully. But she's a beautiful singer and made a very hard, difficult aria look easy.

My God! Is she real? That was incredible! - and the ornaments in the recapitulation are exquisite. This girl is flawless.

However... and after watching this video dozens of times - yes, I loved her work!- her facial expressions don't match with the lyrics at some points. The overall mood of this aria is joyful but there must be a contrast in the middle section ("Already I gave you my heart: I trust you will be my love; but you will be too cruel, my dear hope.") Thinking that she does not know what she's singing about may be wrong headed, specially after watching this outpouring of virtuosity. A change of mood should be something to consider in next performances. Otherwise, this is close to perfection.

How can you even try to indicate she does not know what she is singing about? That is impossible at this level of mastership. She is simply smiling for her current audience (most of whom really do not know what she is singing about). On stage, singing in an operatic nerformance she would probably use quite different facial expressions.

Ogrgels Lair, don't be ridiculous. When professional singers study a new aria in a foreign language they ALWAYS make it their business to find out EXACTLY what each and every word means. Any suggestion that she doesn't know what she's singing about is absolutely ludicrous and shows that you don't know anything about opera or classical singing.

Wow! Great performance of this aria. I must say though, her ornamentation of the "da capo" section is almost identical to Dessay's rendition, so I'm wondering if it was copied from one of her recordings or if it was composed by the same person at one point or another? She forgoes the [crazily amazing] cadenza Dessay used to do, so maybe it's just coincidence or something!

no es tan facil cantar un aria barroca.....porque son de una dificultad extrema.no solo es soltar aguditos.sino saber fluir por el aria como si fuera un poema vocal......para lo cual la voz es el instrumento poetico....handel es handelllll...y por tanto a la hora de cantarsele hay que pensarselo antes......la melodia es extrema y bellisima .........y esta cantante no hace mas que acentuar la calidad de handel.....en tanto en cuanto que es incapaz de hacerlo

@coloraturajoy I think it is not 100 percent sure, according to the sources. The respected Grove Music Dictionary online says: "Alcina. Opera in three acts by GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL to an anonymous libretto after Cantos vi and vii of LUDOVICO ARIOSTO’s Orlando furioso, adapted from the libretto for Riccardo Broschi’s L’isola di Alcina (1728, Rome)...." The Oxford Companion to Music... "Alcina. Opera in three acts by Handel to an anonymous libretto after Ariosto's Orlando furioso..."

Interesting note, I absolutely dissagree. Here is an english translation of the text, in my opinion the singer's looks, articulation and shaping of the music and words is optimal and brings out the character of the aria very well. "Return to me to languish, Only you, dear one, this soul wants to love. I already gave you my heart, I trust you will be my love, But will you be cruel to me, My dear hope?" Well done, Adriana!

Great orchestra, Adriana's voice is a little "harder" than Sandrine Piau's or Natalie Dessay's and of course doesn't get close to Joan Sutherland. Excellent singing though and a very enjoyable.

Pana Keje in the score that’s at my school (coloratura arias for sopranos), there are no ornaments written because it’s written as a standard double aria to save pages however this can be different in many books.

Pana Keje No, the ornaments made famous by Dessay were not written or composed by Handel, so yes this and many other recordings post-Dessay’s recording simply stole her genius ones, and rarely execute them as well as she did, because they were written for her voice, not the other sopranos!
