@@ViewpointProd The original G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series was a coproduction of Sunbow Productions (which was Hasbro's go-to company for series) and Marvel Productions (the former DePattie-Freling Enterprises, which Marvel had bought a few years before after they made the original Spider-Woman series on their behalf). Marvel Comics, of course, was publishing the comic series, and their animation studio was a logical choice to make the animated TV ads (which were officially for be comic book to get around toy ad restrictions of the time). When they decided to ramp it up into a mini-series, they began subcontracting the animation to Toei, and later other Japanese studios.

Hasbro put the G.I.Joe cartoon out for bids in 1988 (after the Sunbow movie). They selected D.I.C. as the winner of that bidding process. D.I.C.'s cartoon was much lower budget (and hence quality) than the previous Sunbow cartoon right out of the gate with the mini-series in 1989.

While the DIC series may receive a lot of criticism (not all of it undeserved) it is important ot remember that they were operating under a drastically reduced budget. For me the cardinal sin of DIC GI Joe was not so much the animation (a drop in animation can be forgivable if the stories are engrossing) but rather the drop in plotting. While Marvel/Sunbow GI Joe could be guilty of being formulaic, the DIC series really took a nosedive in this aspect and lacked overall story arcs that could pull a whole bunch of stand alone eps together. Not only that but the plotting often reduced both the Joe heroes and Cobra villains to cardboard cutout stereotypes with very little character development. Having said that, I should say that I actually really loved the "Got to get Tough" theme song. It was new, full of energy, and even today i still think it holds up well. If Marvel/Sunbow had been renewed and gotten the contract for 89-92 instead of DIC they could have used the "Got to Get Tough" theme for a new season and it would not have been out of place. Really cool piece of kids' cartoon music.
@3djoes6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% with your thoughts. Kirk Bozigian came back on the brand in 1990 and he has lamented the shrinking marketing budget of that era many times in interviews. The G.I.Joe brand team simply had to go with the cheaper animation alternative. When you look at it from a revenue perspective it makes perfect sense: G.I.Joe's high water mark for sales was in 1986, and by 1989 they were selling half the product that they were in 1986. When product is losing steam it's hard to make the case to spend big money on top tier animation.

G.I Joe: International heroes! *Shows the Real American hero logo* This dubbing is horrible. I remember in the 80's, G.I Joe was redubbed into Action Force for international markets, but often the dubbing didn't match up with what was on screen. During on episode, Flint left a credit card with a hotel receptionist that clearly identified him as being a part of G.I Joe. Me and my brother (I was 9, he was 5) realised something was up. Then a little while later, my mam bought in some G.I Joe video tapes she got from a pound shop and we were like "This *is* action force. Why did they change the name?" At least with this dub, they kept the name, just changed american to international. Later, we started to question why we had the teenage mutant hero turtles and Americans refered to them as ninja turtles. Dubbing is a weird thing when done in the same language.

Instead of moving the series forward they tried to push everything back to what it was in 1985, but with steering committees ruining every script for PC purposes. Cobra Commander and Destro were reduced an Abbot and Costello level buffoons. No more Cobra La arc. No more Dr. Mindbender, no more Crimson twins. No more Zartan and the Dred Knox, no Scrap Iron, no Wild Weasel. Instead they give us Naugahyde and Metalhead. At the time Robocop was more Marvel quality than DIC Joe ever was. The DiC series is inferior in almost every way, except the intro got a major testosterone injection. I think International Heroes was done to make it easier for the European markets since Action Force was being sold as Gi Joe The Action Force and was an International team instead of an American one.

you're right Hasbro bought Palitoy, makers of the original Action Force in '85 (they had been working together since the '60s I believe), and by 1988 the two toy lines and comic book continuities would finally merge into one, with a retcon that Action Force's enemy the Red Shadow, became Cobra Commander and started Cobra after his defeat by Action Force. obviously this doesn't gel with either the DIC or Sunbow shows, but they never followed Larry Hama's comics or file cards to begin with.

@Chalk0073 it's shame all the DIC Gi Joe episodes weren't that good. I do like Operation Dragonfire though. Really feels like one last hoorah for ARAH Gi Joe.

These Dic intros were boring. They do not begin to compare to the Sunbow intros.

By this point Hasbro was selling G.I.Joe all over the world! So, it made sense for them to open it up to appeal to a larger audience. Also, there were Joes like Big Ben on the team, which was from the UK. The last 18 pages of my 6th and final volume on the art of Joe calls out some of the countries in which Joes were sold: www.3djoes.com/uploads/1/3/3/9/13396852/v6-spread31-61-62_1_orig.jpg 3DJoes.com/books

As if this incarnation of 'Joe as a whole wasn't bad enough, the new theme tune's chant - "Got to get tough!" - sounds like a Ramones rip-off!
