The main reason Hasbro likely won't re release the Whale is because of cost deficit to make and copy right infringement, I would redesign it by allowing it to least carry two vamps, so that would be longer and certainly make it would better quality plastic. 5o Cals. would be on the front.

I remember this kid down the street got this for Christmas one year...he always got tons of toys all year long, and I distinctly remember riding my bike near his house, seeing the box it came in near the trash after Christmas. A year later, it was sold in a yard sale, which, for some reason my older brother thought I'd want to have it...it was missing all the depth charges, bike, and the vanes, but I didn't care, it floated and it was awesome!

i have to admit, as a kid i drooled over the whale in catalogs and never got to realize that desire... until after nearly 28 years i finally got one nearly complete via ebay for around $20 last month! i lllloooovvvvveeee iiiiiitttttt!!!!!! and it of course looks great in my 6x4x4 vintage joe diorama!

I started collecting the gi Joe's as they came out in 1982, I had a huge collection, I packed it up when went away to college,after college I came home to pick up all my joes,and they were all gone. I miss them so much. I would love to start collecting them again. But I just dont have the money for it, they are so expensive anymore.

Wow, your channel is fast becoming a favorite...great job. I had the WHALE, and unfortunatley living in Florida we didnt have creeks to put it in..we had Kitchen sink, bathtub or dangerous rock pit lake or canal that if you toss in the WHALE say goodbye lol. I am almost contemplating starting a collection based on your channel...keep up the good work!

I repaired my vanes with OD green duct tape. I have a full unbroken set in case I ever sell it, but the more play friendly ones are on it when displayed.

Great video! The WHale was my favorite toy as well. It survived so many creek bed battles and I still have it. Great idea on stripping it down and cleaning it out.

My neighbor across the street had that when I was growing up. He was a little bit older than me, and had a lot of the early GI Joe stuff. My GI Joe collection was more stuff from later series. I grew up in Rhode Island, and my uncle actually worked for Hasbro for about little while. I asked him about getting me the Killer Whale, but it was before his time and he wasn't familiar with it. It really was the ultimate GI Joe vehicle, and I was always so jealous of my neighbor.

Watching this made me relive my childhood. I remember when I got my Killer Whale, it was the best day of my life. I never was able to float it on water but I didn't mind. Thanks for the memories!

A shame they don't make toys like these anymore. My favorite was the hydrofoil, which I've manned with my hunter dream team of storm shadow, spirit, low light, tunnel rat, outback, hydrofoil driver, and snake-eyes on the gun turret!

Defiantly one of my favourite toys that I never owned. I had a couple friends with this one and it was a beast of a toy as a kid. Was great for playing and pretending your lawn was some huge grassy swamp. Having friends come over with this and using all the boats to have battles with was so much fun. Many a depth charge was lost in my yard.

AAAARRRGGGHH, I just bought a W.H.A.L.E. G I Joe was the best toy line because of the details of the toys, along with their construction, were above and beyond anything of that era. The amount of damage that these toys were subjected to and still were playable is completely out of the realm of today's toys.YES, I know that some were brittle, but for the most part they held up well. The gliders actually glided, the boats floated, the planes.. crashed and survived, what more could a child want.

Never had the W.H.A.L.E., but the Warthog APC was a nice substitute for me. I remember working at Toys R Us when it came out, and when it was released it was hard to keep in stock. Fortunately, it was in a flyer that coincided with payday, and I was able to grab one.

even as a young child, I found the neon color scheme of the later toys to be wildly off-putting... nothing beats the grays/browns and olive drabs of the early toys! I love how you've restored this toy - it looks spectacular!

I loved that you got it for Cristmas only problem I had is I put it together wrong and the recon sled did not work properly and ended up having a hole in front which leaked lol but absoultly one of my favorites

Wow! I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the "hovercraft", especially the depth charges. And indeed, I used it as a massive troop transport. I also agree it was more awesome than the aircraft carrier--I had a lot of Joe, but the aircraft carrier was (both literally and figuratively) never on the table. I think my only exposure to the aircraft carrier was from a Sears catalog. Funny you call the hovercraft "early Joe", since from my perspective, it was "late Joe", toward the end of my collection. But, yeah, nostalgia has taken me back to a lot of toys, but the Joes after the mid-80s are so "flamboyant" that I'm leaving GI Joe to my memories. That being said, I don't care for the movies putting the joes all in identical body suits.

I still remember walking into a local close out store called Marcs back in 1996 and finding this in the mail away box for $6.99. There was a stack of them along with bins of mail away flag points items. An entire bin of Quick Kicks for $.99 each. A creative way to fix the extremely fregile vanes on the back. I too broke mine while there were in storage. I chose to go the simpler rout and buy reproductions and simple place my original back in side the troop transport aera.

Yep, very cool toy from back in the day and one of those I wish I had gotten as a kid. The *G.I. Joe* toyline was best from '82 to '85, after that it did get corny with the sci-fi stuff and neon troopers.

It seemed obvious to me that the Terror Drome had a force field over it. Which I guess that had to momentarily disable in order to launch the rocket thingy. The more I think about it, the less sense it makes. So I'm going to stop thinking about it now. But now I'm realizing that the Command Center had essentially the same problem. ACK! BTW, you're also spot-on about how the pre-'86 toys had the coolest, most believable look. They were knocking it out of the park from 83-85!

I want this so bad. Until I acquired it, the Cobra Rattler and GI Joe Skystriker especially were the vehicles I wanted since I was cheated out of it Christmas '86. I opened the Skystriker box and it was missing half the components. I had to settle for the Conquest X-30 since KayBee didn't have any Skystrikers in stock.

You totally nailed it here. The WHALE was by FAR the Joe vehicle I enjoyed most. The FLAGG was just big, and it totally overrated (my parents wouldn't go as far as living with a 7' plastic aircraft carrier, so my opinion on this is based on the one my friend had. It was a big plastic table more than anything else). Sadly, I think mine got garage-saled some years ago (grrrr) - along with the other holy grail toy, the Terror Drome!

I’m new to your channel so I apologize for the late comment. I loved this toy when I was younger, and am now wondering if it survived in my parents attic somewhere. Last time I looked through old toys was about 20 years ago and the rubber bands holding cobra commander together had dry rotted and he fell apart when I picked it up. I didn’t dare touch any other figures after that. A good majority of figures had broken thumbs. Might take a look over there and post whatever I still have on eBay.

hi, I have a question. I have two terror dromes with two different problems, I have my original t.d., but it is dirty, the white is really dirty, buy not yellow, have you ever broke one down to clean? and what would you use for cleaning? my second problem is the one I bought about 15 years ago that was mint in box, I kept this one in the shipping box, and in my den for ten years, I kept it out of light, but the other day I opened it up and there are small lines of yellow running down the inner part, any idea how to remove the yellow? the one in box is clean, super clean and I hate the yellow, any ideas or suggestions would help out a lot, thanks

The Flagg is massive, but honestly I don't think it has as much play value as a lot of other GI Joe toys. It works much better as a collector's display pience IMHO.

Anthony Condegni That's the Amphibious Personnel Carrier (APC). The front of the box mentioned it holds 28 G.I. Joe Soldiers. The camouflaged top with gun turret was removable and it did indeed float. You can find plenty of APC images atwww.yojoe.com/vehicles/83/apc/

+valo smoke, To be fair to my old man, he's dead (he'd be 80), but he didn't "get it", I think he threw them away because some of them "seemed broken" to him despite having playability, and to him if they were "left outside" that was equal to "being thrown away" (even though that's where we played with them). I had a metal tractor trailer I used to "park" on our planter behind a bush, nope, not parked, thrown away! He was old, he forgot what it was like to be a kid is all. :(

you know whats bullshit I got a mint in the box windraider with stickers off had it put together was having it on a shelf decided to kinda play with it was being very careful thought ited be funny to put starwars guys in it for a animated movie I was filming went to adjust one of the wings and the son of a bitch snaped right off pissed me off bought it on ebay had one already with a wing broken used super glue on that one and be damed if it didn't come off again my question is whats the best way to repair those wings also should vintage toys be stored at room tempeture cause I did have it out in a room were it went from cold to hot and so forth
