An increase in the diameter of the areola and asymmetry of the chest are other possible signs of gynecomastia.
Men with gynecomastia may appear anxious or stressed due to concerns about its appearance and the possibility of having breast cancer.
Gynecomastia is thought to be caused by an altered ratio of estrogens to androgens mediated by an increase in estrogen production, a decrease in androgen production, or a combination of these two factors. Estrogen acts as a growth hormone to increase the size of male breast tissue. The cause of gynecomastia is unknown in around 25% of cases. Drugs are estimated to cause 10-25% of cases of gynecomastia.
Lavender and tea tree oils have estrogenic and anti-androgenic effects and there have been reports of their use causing prepubertal gynecomastia.
Certain health problems in men such as liver disease, kidney failure, or low testosterone can cause breast growth in men. Drugs and liver disease are the most common cause in adults. Other medications known to cause gynecomastia include methadone; aldosterone antagonists (spironolactone and eplerenone); HIV medication; cancer chemotherapy; hormone treatment for prostate cancer; heartburn and ulcer medications; calcium channel blockers; antifungal medications such as ketoconazole; antibiotics such as metronidazole; tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline; and herbals such as lavender, tea tree oil, and dong quay . The insecticide phenothrin possesses antiandrogen activity and has been associated with gynecomastia.
The spectrum of gynecomastia severity has been categorized into a grading system:
Grade I: Minor enlargement, no skin excess
Grade II: Moderate enlargement, no skin excess
Grade III: Moderate enlargement, skin excess
Grade IV: Marked enlargement, skin excess
Gynecomastia surgery is the removal of glandular tissue from the breasts of men. This surgery helps to get rid of the embarrassment caused by men with breasts like women. The patient can leave after the operation. However, some preventive measures need to be taken for proper healing. After 2/3 days you will be able to do all kinds of normal work. Heavy work, exercise, 3/4 weeks off. A good result is obtained between 4 to 6 months. Complete blemish-free surgery is now possible with single keyhole surgery. Which was first started by Dr. Shariful Islam Sharif Sir in Bangladesh.
