This is one of the most relaxing series on KZbin. Discovery Travel should give you guys a show, "Chillin' 'Round the World with G & K"

I hiked up that fuppin mountain when it was 90F and humid. It was miserable, but oh so worth it. The views were amazing. And those stairs do get suuuper slippery, I think they are slate or something.

lovely footage of the train ride. I loved the transitions as you passed clumps of trees, very seamless.

Seems that according to Sound Hound the Irish song is Reel Around the Sun (from Riverdance) and the first result was by the Twelve Girls Band, which is a Chinese group using traditional Chinese instruments to preform a variety of music. So that might explain the Irish music I guess.

You know ever since you mentioned it in a previous episode I have had the biggest desire to play the Onimusha games again.... Biggest video game regret of my life was trading in my old PS2 box set before I went to University... To Amazon! Oh and I am really enjoying these vlogs, I've always wanted to go to Japan so I am visiting vicariously through you two!

I actually just got back from a trip to Japan! We stayed briefly in Takayama, and the Hida beef was probably the best thing I ate on that trip. Fortunately, ours didn't come with weird Irish music.

Ah, the eternal struggle of man versus whashp. So tragic. Also, this trip seems to be pretty darn awesome.

What is the music that was playing when you were going up to Gifu Castle after the squirrel village?

You should get some sort of head-mounted camera for your next trip; that way you wouldn't have to choose between filming and negotiating slippery stairs.

Like it does suck building those kind of outside stareways. You sort of have to use the them to build them up. You know like how cranes build themselves.

Hey, Graham, was there a cut at ~ 11:26 ? It seemed like a really smooth cut but might've just been continued footage and looked kinda like a cut.

"It was me, Dio!" is from the first episode of JJBA, if you want to watch it and therefore get the joke. Though to be honest, it's not really a reference to the show any more, it's more a reference to the meme.
@loadingreadyrun8 жыл бұрын
I referenced that meme *so* well.

"Snack" - I could go for some food. Did you figure out what that place is or was it just too early to be open? "Snack" in Japan is an "establishment of the night", not a restaurant...
@loadingreadyrun8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Snack was definitely a nightclub-we needed dinner. Never actually been too a Japanese nightclub but I know that they're very different (and smaller) than NA ones.

I wouldn't count out the authenticity of the castle, because all of the restoration is done using the techniques originally used to build the castles. So who knows, similar techniques were likely put in place for the reproduction.
@loadingreadyrun8 жыл бұрын
+Nathaniel Leon The interior is pretty clearly not period, but I wasn't remarking on its authenticity, merely its age.

+loadingreadyrun And tactical positioning :)
@nathanielleon41638 жыл бұрын
That's fair. I haven't been, so I wouldn't know. :) It had just reminded me of some research I had done of Cultural Resource Management dealing with "authenticity" and how it's become a big deal, in no small part thanks to Japan, who hosted a UNESCO conference in '94 on redefining authenticity for the purposes of evaluating world heritage sites. Japan's interest was sort of focused on the fact that a lot of the older buildings are made of wood; but the then current definition of "authenticity" kept them from actually maintaining them, because the focus was on how much of the original structure remained. The argument against this was "Well a monumental thing isn't always just the sum of its parts. Plus we have people handing down traditional construction practices, and traditional forms of maintenance, and isn't keeping that alive just as important?" and that's basically the accepted view now. Anyways this stuff led to the acceptance of Intangible Cultural Heritage as a legitimate thing, which has done a load of good for aboriginal groups, and is also probably what the Cormorant Fishing guys are trying to get their traditional cultural practice labeled as. It's some pretty recent stuff, to the point where my province is one of two or three provinces that actually have dedicated Intangible Cultural Heritage government offices, which has only happened in the past few years. TL;DR: Sorry, I just saw something that reminded me of my area of study and thought I could drop a neat heritage fact. I apologize if it seemed more aggressive than that. I'm also sorry for just dumping my nerd stuff on you. It looks like a super pretty place to visit. I'm really enjoying the series. :)

My wife and I want to visit Japan but we're not going until we know enough of the language to cancel out our being American. My uncle was a merchant marine stationed in Japan. The ladies thought he was a sumo wrestler so he was often invited to dine with them. Whether that was euphemism or not I'll leave up to you.

No, YOU can get away with it because YOU'RE Canadian. :P It's mostly because we feel it's disrespectful to just blunder around with our thumbs up our asses in some other person's country. Call it pride. :P

I do not like an hwasp I say! I wish it would just go away! I do not like it in my home. I do not like it when I roam. I'd rather it be far than near. I wish it'd fly away from here. I do not like it on the hill. If hwasp lands close, then swat I will. I do not like an hwasp, so scram! I do not like it, Graham-I-am!
