Airflo! Agree on the overweighting of lines, I don't like to do it in general unless the rod feels really stiff.

At the time I also had access to the sales rep's demo Asquith 6 wt. In the end I swapped the 5 for the 6 as I was using the 5 wt. mostly as a 6. It's just the nature of my fishing. I'm either going after trout with a 2 to 4 wt. or after smallies using a 6 or 7 wt. I also had six 5 wt rods that I used for casting instruction, so it made more sense to have an Asquith 6 than the 5. It also benefited the sales rep to get a lighter rod as all of his demo fly rods were on the heavier side.

Hello Peter, as you are well aware new fly rod technology seems to get better year after year...How long do you think it will be before G. Loomis upgrades the 5 year old Asquith line of fly rods? Thanks!!

Hi Peter, in your opinion how would this 5wt rod perform with scientific angler trout 6wt fly line. That line is a traditional weight line

It would be no problem at all. I have cast a WF-6-F Airflo Elite on it which is also a standard weight line. Can't hardly tell the difference between the 5 and the 6. I regularly alternated between these line weights when fishing the rod.

Until you try one, don't be so quick to dismiss it. I get to cast a lot of client rods and often I'm not impressed, wondering what all the hype was about. This one is different. Do yourself a favour and try one.

Peter Charles is correct, the Asquith 590 (rod alone) weighs in at 2.9 oz on my scale & casting the Asquith is just an amazing experience. If you doubt, go to your local fly shop and test drive one 😁 you won’t regret it. As far as price is concerned, many people have more unused guns in their safe that are worth much more than the Asquith. Buying an Asquith is like gifting yourself to something very special.

I guess you need a light-in-hand rod, the way your casting. You also probably need rotor cuff surgery coming up soon.

Well, I guess you better get up here and teach me how to cast properly. I've been doing this for decades so my rotator cuffs must be on their very last legs by now.

No need. At your longer distance casting, there's no reason you need to pick your elbow up any higher than your 35ft cast, only drift back a bit and shoot your back cast higher. Also no need to rock back and forth. Rocking creates hull slapping if you're in a boat.. All in all, you're just working way too hard for a rod that you could easily do a pickup and lay down cast at any of those distances. But hey, I'm sure you wouldn't listen to me, but hope someone like the late, great Lefty (RIP my friend) himself can still shed a little light on the subject for you.

Really? If I'm not casting like Lefty, I'm doing it wrong? That's the problem with this business, too many people thinking there's only one true way. About that 'body rock' and the 'hull slap' - you do realize that I don't own a boat and rarely fish from one, so why on earth would I worry about 'hull slap'? The river bottom doesn't move when I transfer my weight, so why would it be a concern? Here's a thought for you. I can cast upwards of 50' doing nothing except use my weight transfer to make the cast. Think about that. Just transferring my weight gets me 50'. That means for an 80' cast, my arms are only needed for that extra 30'. The weight transfer supplies most of the casting energy. That means my poor rotator cuffs aren't getting much of a workout, which is why they're 66 years old and still going strong. BTW, you better tell all those golfers and batters not to transfer their weight otherwise they'll rock the boat.

^What a douche. hooked4lifeca, your casts look fine to me. FYI, I believe Mr. Kreh was behind TFO rods, which are absolute JUNK!!! G. Loomis all the way baby!!!
