很多人都以為Boxing Day的意思是拆禮物日，但原來這是一場誤會 ~ ~ 通常是在聖誕節當天拆禮物的。要是Boxing Day不拆禮物，為何叫Boxing Day呢？確實原因沒有人知道，不過也有幾個傳說。 傳說一 十九世紀初，僕人聖誕節亦要工作，不能回家團聚，雇主為感激他們辛勤工作，在聖誕節後一天26號，會將獎金，禮物甚至是多餘的食物放在箱中，讓僕人下班拿回家。 傳說二 與聖誕歌(Good King Wenceslas)有關。Good King Wenceslas歌詞講述在10世紀初， 波希米亞公爵Wenceslas在26號那天心血來潮望向領地時，竟看到一個窮人在雪地上撿柴， 打算拿回家生火取暖，Wenceslas為之動容， 便命人將食物和酒收在箱中，放在他家門。 傳說三 傳說指，英國教會在12月26日會將捐獻箱打破，把錢分給窮人。 節禮日還有另一個傳統，在以前，許多農村居民會在這一天獵狐，而在獵狐之前或之後，他們會到酒吧喝一杯。 據維基百科資料，以前的獵狐活動現在被足球和賽馬取代。英格蘭超級足球聯賽著名的「聖誕快車」亦在這天開始。 不管哪個傳說是真的，至少Boxing Day並非我們想像中的拆禮物日， 反而是「報施日」。不過…現時Boxing Day已轉化為大減價的血拼大日子了

I felt the same way you feel now when I was a teenager. Chinese parents are more reserved, I never prepare this type of surprise but I paid for my kids college education and help put down payment for their first home. Just one gift for Christmas and each birthday but much more generous cash gift for education and first home. My grand kids get 10 gifts from their white grand parents but my son in law had to get a loan for his college education, so, what's better? You figure it out. I didn't even get one Christmas gift because my father believed in Buddhism. I promised myself an exciting Christmas when I grew up and I did, spent lots of money taking all my employees and their children to Disney for a Christmas party and blew lots of money and I only did it once and no more because it's such a waste of money. I guess it's the Chinese practical spirit, respect your parents for their decisions. If you want a surprise, make it happen yourself and you will be proud you did it. I had been to a few of this type of party in American, it's lots of work to prepare of it and too much work cleaning afterwards, too stressful.

They are not going to do everything you wish they do but definitely give you the best they can. I didn't until I had kids and I was busy raising my kids and now my parents passed away.
