No,only second generation chinese american or those immigrated to America at a early age will think they are amercian, those Chinese American raised up in China will not think they are really american even tho they will officially say they are
To see you as a hong kong citizen is pretty cool, but tried to over run government is not pretty cool. if a country goverment can be over run by its citizens is a weak country.
Having been in HK for 3 decades and working in the finance industry where my peers are generally quite well off and well travelled, the one source of profound disappointment for me is the realisation of what blinkered vision and narrow perspective HKers have of the world around them, especially of the parts of Asia that they perceive to be “less advance” than HK. To my mind, it is this same narrow-mindedness that has informed their distorted notions of western democracy, values, justice and freedoms that have hamstrung HK’s development since the 1997 handover. A huge swath of the HK middle class have a romantic, absolute and unrealistic notion of freedoms. I wish they could embed themselves in a typical American family and live with them for a good few years to understand what America’s idea of freedoms and human rights really mean in practice; then HKers will really see what damage they have allowed to befall HK, their home, in the riots of 2019. Their ill-conceived notion of freedoms and such other vaunted western values are informed by the very same narrow-minded perspectives they bring to bear on stereotypes about lifestyles and customs of HK minorities. For all the affluence of HK and the opportunities to learn about the world through living in a cosmopolitan city, frequent travels for work and play, and accessibility to higher education, it is apparent that HKers have failed themselves miserably.

In many ways HKers think very similarly to Americans. Very ignorantly.

@Chinese080808 I’m afraid you are right. Don’t get me wrong - I’m fiercely proud and defensive of HK. It is an amazing place and I totally love the place. But after having worked and lived alongside HKers for 3 decades (which has informed my high regard for them), the protests have totally shaken the way I now look at many HKers. I feel the sadness of seeing the damage they’ve brought on HK where they were born, but so many HKers have shown us that they have no sentimental regard for their home.

@@kindface yes, I agree with your assessment. The western indoctrination is very extreme to a degree that I sometimes think it's got to be genetic, LoL! It's sad to see the majority of HKers who are ethnically Chinese bash their own country and wish ill will on their own. Western elites couldn't be more delighted.

@Chinese080808 This attitude of stomping on their own kind is not only disturbing but downright reprehensible. Some people have this silly mindset that discriminating against one’s own kind makes it less a discrimination, a folly of the mind of course. To be fair, many HKers do not share such an extreme attitude but I take issue with the fact they stay silent when the others among them do. In any case, the American hidden hand behind the protests is not to be underestimated. The US Consulate General in HK has some 6,000 registered employees - it makes you wonder why such a large number for just a population of 7.3 million people.

@@kindface definitely! Many are afraid of being marginalized for speaking up, etc so they stay silent. It's very sad but when your livelihood is at stake I guess you have to tow the line for a while. Sigh...
HK is no longer a safe n beautiful city. There's no more law n order. This city will be permanently be stike off from my vacation list. The place is now so dirty n ungly. Vulgar words, swearing n cursing can heard everywhere, too scare to be there. If u love the city u live, u won't destroy it.

Taking the story out of context and what shortsightedness. The government destroyed the city first and if we do nothing, the legal system will be the next to be destroyed. The people couldn't take it any longer just. Punching mainlanders are not justified, but other things, I think their actions are understandable. If you asked any person who lived through both 1980s era and 2010s era of HK, then you would hear their dissatisfaction on how the government made HK a...worser place to live. People have failed and the government has won. HK will deteriorate even faster and there are plenty of reasons why it would. I hope you are satisfied with your choice by then.
