Already League champions, Liverpool were given a football lesson by Netzer and company, conceded two first-half goals but somehow held on to win 3-2 on aggregate.
The Germans brought in Surau for Michallich and looked to their captain, Gunter Netzer, to provide the inspiration for a fight-back. Netzer didn't fail them, spraying passes here, there and everywhere with tremendous accuracy. More than once he split the usually composed Liverpool defence with unerring precision.
NB: Most of the first half highlights are missing

Only if Helmut Schoen could find a way to use both Netzer and Overath in W. Germany's line up in 1974 W. Cup. It is a pity he had to watch the final from the stand. This is a problem when you have 2 great midfield generals. Valcareggi, the Italy manager in 1970 W. Cup had the same problem: He couldn't use both Riviera and Mazzola in the same line up; so he ended up using each one of them in one half!!! Maybe, Helmut Schoen should have done the same. I consider both Netzer and Overath as Germany's best midfielders of all time. Others can certainly have a different opinion.

Agreed, certainly better players than the overrated Matthaus (not to knock his career as footballer).

Mazzola and Rivera were trequartistas, that's not suitable for catenaccio, too many offensive players. Netzer and Overath were phenomenal offensevely but the 2 in the same midfield was risky if you wanted to have some deffensive guarantees

@@Ruda-n4hAin't that the truth. Comparing Overath to Netzer is like comparing Matthias Sammer with Beckenbauer; or Geoff Hurst to Jimmy Greaves. Schuster was the only German midfielder who could possibly have reached same heights as Netzer.

Your analysis is right on the money, however, West Germany won Euro 1972 with Netzer running the show, and in 1974 Overath was the midfield general when they won the World Cup. So Germany benefitted from both of their incredible talents.

@@PaulWills Moenchengladbach were the better footballing side. Phil Neal was very impressed with their ability in 1978, to counter attack so quickly and skilfully but they had problems coping with British teams in the air and didn't have a top class striker to play up with Jupp Heynkes. It was a tragedy for the game that they didn't win the European Cup in 1977, which they would have done if Uli Stielike had put away the 1 on 1 chance before Smith's goal.

@@Ruda-n4h A tragedy for the game! How on earth do you work that one out? They were beaten by a better team. An outstanding team which retained the European Cup the following season - beating Borussia yet again on the way - and then won it again in 1981 & 84. I know from reading a history of German football they were an exceptionally good team, but, sadly for you, not good enough to deal with Liverpool.

@@PaulWills Hennes Weisweiler proved himself a brilliant manager by leading Borussia from obscurity to maturity without ever buying a star player and using his coaching skills on the training pitch to bring on and improve players, which it why it was a shame they didn't win. I suppose you could say the same thing about Shankly to a lesser extent. I know a lot of people in Britain think that football is all about winning and getting results - I don't. I think you should try and entertain first and then make it pay. 1978, 81, 84 - what a yawn they were. Liverpool were a club I had a great deal of respect for until their little escape at Heysel I'm afraid.

Disgrace how great players could be stopped in the 1970s @1:10. Not even a yellow. As an offensive player it probaly needed a flying kung fu kick to even get the defender yellow carded. Compare that to the times nowadays where defenders need to run around with their arms strapped behind their backs

@@haimarazy Borussia played the better football in the second leg.
