Story Time: In the heart of the Tir Eryri forest, where the air hung heavy with mist and the trees stood cloaked in ancient moss, a lake shimmered like a piece of the sky fallen to earth. Its waters glowed an ethereal blue, unnaturally vivid against the muted greens and grays of the surrounding world. Alys, a wiry girl of sixteen with fiery red hair braided down her back, sat barefoot on a rock jutting out into the lake, her legs dangling into the icy water. The lake was known as Llyn Haulwen, named for her great-grandmother, Haulwen, who had died decades ago in her twenties. Alys never knew Haulwen, but she felt her absence like an echo in her own life. Haulwen had been the heart of her family, so the stories said - a woman of profound strength and spirit who passed too soon, leaving an irreplaceable void. Beside the lake stood the statue. Carved from pale stone that seemed to glow faintly in the perpetual gray light of the forest, the statue was a likeness of Haulwen. The craftsmanship was hauntingly lifelike: the soft contours of her face, her serene expression, and her gaze fixed gently on the lake. Vines clung to the base, and moss grew in the carved crevices, yet her face remained untouched by the passage of time. Alys came here often, seeking solace in the statue’s presence. She didn’t know why the lake called to her, but it was a connection she couldn’t deny. Her family told her it was superstition, the kind of tale villagers passed down to romanticize tragedy. Yet, sitting there in the stillness, she felt her great-grandmother’s presence as surely as she felt the chill of the water on her skin. Today, the lake felt different. Alys noticed it the moment she dipped her toes into the water. Its blue seemed richer, deeper, like the sky at twilight. Tiny ripples moved across its surface, though no breeze stirred the air. The mist thickened around her, enclosing her in a cocoon of damp silence. “Are you here, Haulwen?” she whispered. Her voice sounded small, almost swallowed by the mist. The lake responded. Alys saw the ripples shift, spiraling outward from where her feet touched the water. The motion was hypnotic, drawing her attention deeper into the shimmering blue depths. She leaned forward, her fingers grazing the surface. The water felt warmer than before, a gentle pulse against her skin, like a heartbeat. Then came the light. It began as a faint glow from the depths of the lake, rising slowly until the water seemed to radiate a gentle, otherworldly luminescence. The statue of Haulwen seemed to come alive in its glow. Alys stared, transfixed, as the stone face appeared to soften, the carved features subtly shifting, almost imperceptibly. Her great-grandmother’s eyes, once fixed on the lake, now seemed to look directly at her. Alys recoiled, her breath catching in her throat. “Haulwen?” she whispered again, her voice trembling. She heard no reply - no voice carried on the mist, no ghostly apparition emerging from the water. Yet she felt an answer, deep in her chest, as if a thought not her own had taken root there. The lake’s glow grew stronger, its surface impossibly clear. Alys could see all the way to its bottom, where smooth stones formed patterns too deliberate to be natural. Her hand trembled as she reached for the statue’s base, touching the moss-covered stone. Suddenly, her mind flooded with images. A vision of Haulwen, standing on the very rock where Alys now sat, her fiery hair flowing in the wind. Her expression was one of defiance, strength, and sorrow. She stood against an unseen force, protecting something precious. Then, as quickly as the vision appeared, it faded, leaving Alys gasping for air. Her head spun, and she turned to the statue again. It was still, its serene face unchanged. Yet she felt closer to her great-grandmother than ever before, as though the woman herself had stood beside her, guiding her. The glow of the lake began to fade, the light dimming until its waters returned to their usual stillness. The mist lifted slightly, revealing more of the forest around her. Alys sat back on the rock, her fingers curling into the damp moss as she tried to steady her thoughts. Had it been real? Or was it her own longing conjuring visions in the mist? The villagers’ stories about Llyn Haulwen rushed back to her. They said the lake could show a person their truest self, reflect the connections they could not see. Yet no one spoke of visions this vivid, this intimate. Alys turned back to the statue. Her great-grandmother’s face seemed as unyielding as ever, but Alys couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted. The connection she felt was undeniable. “Why did you show me that?” she asked, her voice breaking the silence. The statue, of course, gave no answer. The mist thickened once more, the forest retreating into its embrace. The lake shimmered faintly in the dim light, its beauty untouched by what had just transpired. Alys stood, her heart heavy with questions she wasn’t sure she wanted answered. She began her walk back through the forest, the damp earth soft beneath her feet. Yet as she moved away from the lake, she felt the pulse of its energy follow her, like a distant echo she couldn’t escape. Perhaps she never would.

Incredible... Thank you 🙏, you really have talent & clearly in many things... I am most grateful to have seen this in my suggested list - instantly a favourite... Love everything about this & your story times always - you're a formidable writer also, I'd say this was particularly good - although I'm no doubt influenced heavily by the latent relevance to a recent personal event... I'm fairly certain that you've experienced the kind of... 'reciept' from the, 'other side'? ( For respect of any beliefs that may read this, I'll leave my musings there with a 'I know you know 🙂‍↕️' ...) with a similar, very relatable experience I had recently that's sure to have changed my life & entire trajectory...
