Great explanation! The problem that I have with G-Sync is that it is (as of today) FAR more expensive in combination with IPS and I just can't go with a TN panel. I don't really play that much FPS games and would always choose better image quality (no tearing) over performance (fps, stuttering). Of course don't having to make any of those compromises would be perfect and thus G-Sync is a great technology but right now it comes either with a hefty price tag or worse image quality. The dream would be a 34" Ultrawide monitor with gsync 144hz and IPS that doesn't cost as much as my whole system.

Thanks PC Centric.Very easy to watch will be a regular of your channel. I am sold and getting one as a result. Quick question, do you think in FPS games such as bf4, hardline, cs:go and such that its unfair to have a 1440/g-synch monitor if 1080 with no synch what so ever is the norm? Of course its ones perogative, I'm struggling to come to grips with the sportsmanship side of having overly capable hardware. Being global elite on cs:go would be great, but would one perform on lan on a 1080p monitor afterwards at a comp? =)
@PcCentric
@PcCentric 9 жыл бұрын
It depends on the scenario, but I'd rather play at 70fps 1080p than 45fps at QHD. In fps anyway. I'm sold on G-SYNC, and is the best option until free sync catches up.

Hey @pc centric, if you can answer me. I have a 60hz shit monitor with a 1080ti... Yeah... I want to know if I should buy a 240hz monitor without gsync or a 144hz monitor with gsync. The main game i play is Overwatch and i get so much screen tearing, i want to get sweet and smooth clear images and not get those artifactes while turning the camera to fast (ghosting). Now I get over 250fps in OW so in your opinion what is the best? 240hz or 144hz gsync?

great video. i've been trying to explain this and some people say they don't get tearing with vsync off and no stutter with it on. Well maybe they don't know what a perfect scenario is. I bought the pg279q and it's amazing. No stutter and no screen tear. It's the best investment I made in a long time. It was expensive but now I enjoy games even more.

Great video. However some additonal things. V-sync is queit bad today as you should cap it through games "FPS CAP" to your monitor HZ or use programs like Afterburner to cap it instead of using V-sync to avoid stutter and G-sync is freaking expensive today and i can't make my mind up if i wanna run 4K or G-sync, 144Hz 60HZ or whatever... choices, choices.

manta Vince G-Sync is used to get ‘Better Frames’ when the graphics card is rendering video games. Whereas when you are watching a movie the graphics card doesn’t struggle to keep up with the monitor because it doesn’t require instantaneous reactions

Gsync also incorporates adaptive voltage that removes all ghosting and Freesync does not have any adaptive voltage they leave that up to the panel makers and we are seeing bad ghosting.

For people without gsync. You can have vsync ON and smooth gameplay without any stutters - all you need to do is to benchmark your game with settings that will give you no less than minimum fps of your monitor refresh rate - you need to benchmark with vsync OFF for that time. EXAMPLE: On 60hz display if you get max frames: 94 min frames: 71 - then vsync ON and you can play smooth 60fps with no stutters. If your min frames will be like 59 or lower you'll get stutters.

6:40 its not a g-sync problem this happens because of how the game is coded. Game engines have there own time management and rendering and they are trying to work in a way that monitors work, or rather the old monitors. this is why some games will look a bit odd.

Gsync is just Nshitia's coverup move to avoid the REAL issue with ALL modern computers and their graphics issues. I have been trying to diagnose the 60+ fps stutter on modern computers for over 5 years now and I FINALLY found something of concern. The answer lies in the game "Star Wars Battlefront" in battlefront I have the ability to look at the frame times being output by the GPU, and low and behold at a solid 60fps the frame time is CONSTANTLY scrolling from 16.00ms all the way up to 17.00ms NON STOP even at 100% consistant frame rate by 0.01ms at a time, once the frame time hits 17ms it does a giant dive all the way back down to 16.00ms, Don't forget at 60fps and 60hz on your monitor is expecting EXACTLY 16.66ms frame time at 60 fps output, NOT just 16.xx-17.xx frame times. I'm 100% certain this is the issue with 99%+ modern computers, Now that we actually have numbers corresponding to these stutters there is hope!! Here's an example of what you should see; 60fps @ 60hz = 16.66ms frame time. If there is 10 frames being drawn at 60fps for all 10 frames (no deviation) then the frame time should be 16.66ms on ALL 10 frames too. But it's not. Here's what the frame times for 10 frames in a row should look like at 60fps @ 60hz.(Frame #1 = 16.66ms, Frame #2 = 16.66ms, Frame #3 = 16.66ms, Frame #4 = 16.66ms, Frame #5 = 16.66ms. Over and over again up to 10 should ALL have frame times of 16.66ms) Here's an example of what you actually are seeing; 60fps @ 60hz = 16.xx-17.xx frame time. Let's say for example we have 10 frames being drawn at 60fps for all 10 frames again (no deviation) On frame #1 you will get a frame time of something like 16.20ms then on frame #2 you will get a frame time of something like 16.21ms, Frame #3 will be something like 16.22ms. It does this all the way up by 0.01ms at a time until it reaches 17.00ms, then once it hits 17.00ms it resets back down to 16.00ms to start the entire process over again, So the next frame would be 16.01ms, 16.02ms after that ect ect ect until 17.00ms again then reset.This happens at such a fast pace that it's hard to notice on SOME computers, But on SUPER FAST HIGH END computers this is EXTREMELY noticeable. Every time a frame is drawn with +0.01ms frame time will result in "microstutter" And everytime the Frame drops from 17.00 to 16.00ms will be seen by your eyes as "stutters" at 60hz your monitor is expecting a frame every 16.66ms NO IFS AND OR BUTS, and if 1 frame is at 17.00ms and the next one comes out at 16.00ms this causes a 15% deviation in frame output from what your monitor was expecting. Nvidias bullshit fix is gsync, so when this 15% drop in frame time happens the monitor drops with it. So gsync although might look a lot better giving you those "missing" frames when the frame time drops from 17.00ms to 16.00ms this drop is STILL actually happening whethere you have gsync or not and it STILL happening even if it's "masked" by gsync.

I have the viewsonic XG2703GS and compare to my old vg278h, I have much less details about the FPS games by far, the resolution 2k and blur and Gsync + ips = input lag visible during the shoot. Conclusion: technology too expensive, to lose in reactivity and details on FPS games. GSync = input lag , Gsync + V-Sync= input lag reduced. ( Tested by Linus )

A question please. At the moment I play games on a 27" 4k/60 Hz monitor, and my system can handle 60 fps, more or less. I don't want to use smaller monitor. The only 27" g-sync 144 Hz monitor I can afford is only 1080p. Now with the money I would throw for this G-Sync, will I get any better gaming experience? I mean yes I will probably get 100+ fps on 1080p, and with G-Sync it would be a better fit, but by sacrificing 4k experience? Should I stay with my current monitor or getting a g-sync higher refresh rate but lower resolution?
@somnorila9913
@somnorila9913 6 жыл бұрын
It's a matter of taste. I'm one who puts more importance on efficiency, high fps, responsiveness, rather than bling eye candy at 4k. Other people are exactly opposed. So you're the best judge. I had a 24 inch 1920x1200 60Hz monitor but wanted to upgrade. First i was looking at 2k resolutions, 27 inch at 144Hz. But after some consideration i opted for the same size, slightly lower resolution at 1920x1080 but at 240Hz and with Gsync. After some testing i have to say that i'm not at all impressed by this Gsync feature. I can't see it at work. Most of my games never reach 240 fps so tearing isn't noticeable probably because of the fast refresh rate. I get the same image feeling with gsync on or off. I need to test some more but after trying this in CSGO, Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Assassin's Creed Odyssey, of which the later two had tearing if i were to play them on my 60Hz monitor without vsync activated. Now at 240Hz, vsync off, regardless of having Gsync on or off i have same smooth experience. I guess everyone's experience will be different, but i think the almost 25% difference in cost for a monitor between Freesync and Gsync is not worth it if the monitor has a high refresh rate.

I know this video is old and someone had a similar comment below but I hope you'll answer. I am some what worried about whether or not I should focus on getting a 2k TN 144hz monitor compared to an IPS monitor with the same price and specs, but the TN panel has gsync and I'm wondering if it's really worth it to sacrifice the clarity and hyper viewing angles of an IPS compared to a TN?

The input lag from vsync while playing csgo is noticeable. The input lag means that the monitor is behind what the computer has processed: you move the mouse and there is a fraction of a second where it does not move and after you stop moving it keeps going for a bit, similar to using a wireless mouse. I have vsync off, and take the tearing as it is not too noticeable (maybe I am just used to it) and gsync would be useless to me for csgo as I never drop below 250fps. Nice video though.

Amen to that! Games that i play that are Engine limited (when not limited by my GPU, CPU, or System RAM) stutter as well. What G-Sync does is simply elimenate the Tearing, but cannot cure the ENGINE limitation/issues. Perfect example at the moment is COD Advanced Warfare with its recent patch on April 2, 2015. Before the patch, i was having perfect nonstop 91FPS on all Multiplayer maps, even in the most intense firefights, it never dropped below 90-91FPS. What was odd was before the patch, if my FPS was below 90FPS (even if I capped at say 88FPS), i would have alot of mouse and strafe stutter (for some reason, the game worked optimally smoothest at 90-91FPS constantly. Albeit, there seemed to be a slight sort of mouse and strafe stutter even at 91FPS constant). Now with the April 2 patch, when i cap the game anywhere below 90FPS, the game is perfectly smooth (even if the FPS goes down due to full GPU utilization, the game is perfectly smooth). However, now i notice that i would at often times lose FPS during firefights (or even sometimes, just running around with no or 1 enemy in front of me), and the game would not look smooth at all, even with my G-Sync G2460PG monitor. I confirmed that i am not GPU, CPU, nor System RAM limited in with FRAPS, MSI After Burner, and Windows Task Manager whenever i lost FPS for no good reason. This tells me that the game's own engine is limited, and stutter looks HORRIBLE.

I read this before somewhere else but i don't really think it's accurate. From my understanding Gsync bypasses the display's refresh to show images as fast the gpu can output. So 60Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz means that the monitor has fixed refresh rate, set according to its frequency, meaning that 60Hz shows you 60 frames per second to give the impression of movement. Like in the old movie strips. This happens where Gsync technology is not available. With Gsync the refresh is adaptive according to your board output. But from my little testing i find Gsync pointless. As it's purpose is to eliminate the tearing effect. So while with my 60Hz monitor i would notice tearing in some games. Which happens because of frames in queue out of sync with the ones which are displayed. Vsync solves that by telling your gpu to slow down as the monitor can't keep up. But with a high frequency monitor and same PC, the gpu can't keep up with the monitor so there are no frames in queue which would be out of sync. I tested games which would tear without vsync on the 60Hz monitor. Tested them on a 240Hz monitor with vsync off and with gsync on and off and haven't notice any difference. Maybe if i would had over 240 fps tearing would happen and gsync would seem worthy. My supposition is that there are no more frames in queue out of sync or even if that happens the fast refresh rate makes it that the difference between frames are too small to be noticed as image tearing. My conclusion is that if your system can't produce more fps than your monitor's frequency, Gsync is pointless. So for most of us if you get a high refresh rate monitor, you would probably overpay if you get a monitor with Gsync.

+Joe ‘JustAGamer’ Tiago G-Sync is specific for Nvidia graphics cards and freesync for AMD (now Radeon again). This basically means that if you want to buy an nvidia graphics card you MUST get a Gsync monitor in order to get all the benefits from adatipve framerate technology. If you want a freesync monitor on the other hand, to cut costs, you will have to buy an AMD graphics card that supports this technology. Looking for the specs online of particular graphics cards will tell you what resolution and adaptive framerate tech they support.

It's not true. If you can't hit 60fps and you disable Vsync you will still get tearing. Otherwise adaptive V-sync would be panacea, but it's not. G-sync eliminates stutters AND tearing. If you don't have G-sync, your only solutions is to hit 60fps no matter what, otherwise you will see distorsions.

I have an i9 9900k and rtx 3080ti with 32gb 3600mhz ram, I’m running it with a Dell 60hz monitor, I know it’s overkill and I’m switching to a 1440 or 4K in a couple weeks, I just have a question, i recently undervolt my gpu and my cpu as well to an offset of about 0.085. I tried horizon zero dawn and without putting vsync I normally get around 120fps, I usually play with vsync for the screen tearing for the moment until I get my new higher refresh rate monitor, but I have been taking sync off to see what it can do, I’m noticing certain areas when am mounted with a machine and riding in the zone fast I get a bit of stuttering, my fps remain above 100fps during those stutters. I’m just wondering can the 60hz monitor have a doing with the stuttering and should this go away if I used a Gsync monitor? Or would this perhaps be because of my undervolt? I have tried removing the undervolt for both gpu and cpu however and this problem still occurs but it seems when I have vsync on and capped at 60 it doesn’t seem to stutter or so I haven’t noticed, just wondering what’s going on, I feel as my specs should not be giving me stuttering even on ultra with the 3080ti. Could it be because undervolt, or can the 60hz monitor have something to do with stuttering because of how fast the fps change, it sometimes does 160 to 110fps in seconds and bounces a lot or could it just be the game that isn’t optimized correctly for certain zones, I have noticed also some areas I get 85 fps and then when I look elsewhere it goes back to 120. Hopping this is a monitor issue and once I get my new one the stuttering will go away, I would like smoothness for this kind of performance from my specs.

I don't understand the 30 fps comment. If it's a steady 30 then wouldn't 60hz and gsync offer the same thing, and if it's 35 wouldn't gsync work better?
@sniperlif3
@sniperlif3 9 жыл бұрын
Kosaro If you are below 60fps why would you even care about syncing? You sync in order to align GPU frames to monitor frames. Most mainstream monitors only have 60hZ. Vsync allows for 60+ fps to prevent tearing but when it drops below 60 it adds stutter because it redraws a frame twice. If you have Vsync off and get 60+ then you will get tearing when the monitor shows 2 seperate frames. Gsync just eliminates the 60fps requirement and allows for anywhere down to 35+fps to still sync frames to the monitor with no stutter or tearing because the gsync module updates everytime the GPU shows a frame rather than the monitor waiting on the GPU to make a frame that lines up with the timing.
@Kosaro1234
@Kosaro1234 9 жыл бұрын
sniperlif3 I was asking about his comment where he said that playing at 33 fps is smoother at 60hz than with gsync, which doesn't make much sense. It seems you've answered your own question. If below 60fps, gsync would look nicer since it prevents tearing that you would get on a 60hz with vsync off, and the stutter you would get with vsync on. Also the refresh rate of gsync monitors is 30-144, so gsync comes into effect at 30+.
@sniperlif3
@sniperlif3 9 жыл бұрын
Kosaro No no no. Gsync only helps if you are a person that uses vsync all the time. It helps by not needing to worry about your fps dipping below 60fps. Also Gsync is only capable down to 30fps but there is no monitor able to use that yet. The lowest monitor i know of is 40fps made by benq and acer. If you are going to make this much of a deal about it, you dont need any gsync or freesync. Both are just vsync with a fps range rather than one single number. Thats it nothing special.
@Kosaro1234
@Kosaro1234 9 жыл бұрын
sniperlif3 Sorry if this I'm drawling on, but I'm getting interested in this. I have a feeling I'm misunderstanding your points, so please let me know if I understand this correctly: Although both vsync and gsync solve the same problem, they work completely differently and have little to do with each other: vsync limits the speed of the gpu using the double-buffering system to exactly 60 fps (on a 60hz monitor), making sure each frame is complete (no tearing). Whenever fps drops below 60, it shows a frame twice and causes stutter. This method also adds input lad. In gsync, the gpu is running at full speed, and instead of the gpu lining up to the monitor's needs, the monitor lines up to the gpu's needs. Assuming the framerate isn't higher than 144, the gsync monitor shows each complete frame the moment it receives it, and because of the dynamic refresh rate this means that there is never any tearing or repeating frames (stuttering). The lack of a buffer also means there is no input lag. Not sure if you were implying this (don't think you were), but vsync would be redundant on a gsync monitor since it would cut the framerate down to 72 (or 36) if you dipped below 144. Also, on a normal monitor tearing occurs whenever you are below your hz as well. Not sure if you were implying this. About the 40hz min limit, you might be thinking of freesync. I'm pretty sure all gsync monitors can go down to 30 www.pcgamer.com/the-g-sync-and-freesync-monitors-available-right-now/ EDIT: Fixed link
