Thanks for the mini-tour of the centre of my hometown Ken. I was born and spent the first half of my life in Guelph and was always passionate about it(particularly its history and architecture)...I have included a few observations: 1) A bit alarming at the number of seemingly 'homeless' individuals in the downtown core 2)Equally alarming, for a weekday afternoon, aside from the above-mentioned homeless, the downtown core seems almost devoid of any human activity(this was NOT the case in the 1970s, the 1980s or even the 90s) 3)The spires atop the twin towers of the 'Church of Our Lady' were removed during the most recent 'restoration'...this is an awful omission; please, please return them! 4)The angled parking on the west side of Wyndham St. is new to me(though Macdonell St. always had it). Why, in the 21st century, the city would surrender so much of its main street to parked cars and yet apparently have no dedicated bike lanes is disappointing and a mystery to me! 5)The beautifully restored 'Petrie Building' with its stamped metal facade, and its next-door neighbour the 'Kelly Building', are, IMO, two of the three most splendid commercial buildings in the core(the third being the restored former 'Wellington Hotel' further up Wyndham St.) 6)I wish they'd restore the original, shorter, clock tower atop old City Hall(the later, taller monstrosity, was removed in the early 1960s) 7)Macdonell St. is indeed pronounced 'Mak-dun-ell' 8)Yes, Guelph Central Station is magnificent!

Ken, Fun Go train ride to Kitchener. I bet Field Marshal Herbert Kitchener never thought a city in Canada would be named after him...🇬🇧🇨🇦

Wow. This really incited many many thoughts. When I was doing my last two college years, I lived in a town of 15,000. Upon graduation I moved to a city of 350,000. I needed employment of some sort, and I made no attempt to network in the small town. That existence was so much better in the bigger city. Also, everything Canadian is alien to me. BUT Guelph is more comfortable because things I see are more like places I've lived. Things are so CRAMMED together in Toronto, New York, London. I live in a house with incredible separation by Canadian standards from everything around me. Less claustrophobic. San Francisco was like Toronto, but other than that, my environs have had space. I don't want to live in my neighbor's pocket. Seems a little "Asian" to me.

Nice trip, Ken. For me as a railway freak, its very interesting to watch that train ride in comparison to germany. I hope these pretty towns do not change too much because skyscrapers can also harm their charakter.

Thanks, both places are growing fast, but I think the character of old downtown Guelph will stay the same.
