Hegel was deep. Looks like Carl Jung properly addressed the individual trope of not being in coherence with the outside world through the process of individuation and collective unconscious. Thorstein Veblen takes this to a whole new level too.

Theory & Philosophy In Leisure Class he talks about how individuation of the family destroy nations. Mostly related to how female nature was forced by the ‘state’ to gravitate towards extreme individuation, thus destroying the balance between the individual family with the state. Hegel said in this section that society wasn’t ready for the family to be dissolved into the individual.. In leisure class Veblen followed up on that notion and attacked the individual minded female within a family structure for multiple chapters, mentioning that this path will push society into chaos.

@@TheoryPhilosophy my take: For the vast majority of human history-preliterate, pre-history-women were governed by the group of female gatherers, men, by the group of male hunters, and children by groups of their own peers. Men, women, and children did not govern each other, for all knew their place, and by knowing one’s place, one achieves a deep sense of security and identity that simply does not necessitate control of “the other.” As humanity advanced through the economic epochs, from agriculture to industry to the information age, the tribe was whittled down to the extended family and the nuclear family. Men, women, and children became man, woman, and child-and here is where the tyrannical control of “the other” begins. Having lost the built-in security and identity of the “like group,” a new insecurity of role and identity gripped the hearts, minds, and souls of folks who no longer knew their place in the larger community. Women lost the built-in safety and independence of the gathering group; men lost the hunt which would both serve to provide them with the pride and meaning that comes with the role of protector-provider and, too, the healthy, socially harmonious outlet for their aggression and expression of dominance; and children lost the essential experience of learning and growing that can only be truly attained in group play and mutual exploration among one’s peers. Today, the hunt has been sublimated into brutal expressions of familial, social, and international violence (war); the gather, into toxic addiction driven consumerism (Veblen goods); and child’s play into the toxic commercial entertainment industry that mirrors and conditions them to both of these sublimated expressions.

@@mikerizzyraw correct me if I am wrong, but are you confusing "individuation" with "individualism?" Jung means by individuation a "revelation" a revealing of the personal unconscious to the ego (conscious self). I do not think a woman who achieves individuation (Jung) is the same as a sort of baby boomer me me "individual minded" feminist generation thing, which, by the way, is not a strictly female condition--if a condition at all--please note that "social order" within the macrocosm (the state) does not imply harmony within the microcosm (the family)--with spousal abuse and child abuse remaining hidden UNTIL the feminist movement and other social movements brought this to light. I was tyrannized in such a "unit" and becoming an individual (bread winner) was a huge point of safety for me, safety from potential brute force and exploitation...males and females alike are not immune from this "familial" bondage.

I think, that the phrase ''master-slave dialectic'' need not be considered a misnomer. In fact the word master is used interchangeably with lord, and that fact that this chapter is followed by a historical account of the failure of complete self-realisation in the stoics, we ought to think how Marcus Aurelius' defined difference between slavery and lordship, is that a master follows their inward reason and rely upon their own reason, while a slave has to comply with his or her own desires. A close look at the Hegelian account of the failure of the master, is that he is not a real master, he fails in his notion as the master, because he fails to take into account the reason of his slave, who more than he, has transcended their own desire, while the master, is a slave to his or her own desires, to ''enjoyment in the thing''. Although this definitely has a strong political significance to the inequality of wealth in Europe at the time of the French Revolution, the inequality in France, and the failure of the aristocracy to meet the demands of the public's discontent of politics. Power became dominated by flattery and loyalty over knowledge. Power lost touch with its subjects and its regime disintegrated disastrously into pieces, showing that mutual self-recognition, more than some eternal law of the past forms of humanity, had its realisation in the future, the constitution society takes is based on what the re-cognitive, recognition and mutual understanding, that's why historical stages sublate each other, instead of history being one long, linear narrative that emerges from the past into the future, this is what Catherine Malabou's book, ''L'avenir du Hegel'' is so important, that the future dissolves what was normal, divine, santified about the past and the present changes our retroactive understanding of mutually, socially recognitive normalities of culture, whether or not we consider a ''master'' such as an aristocrat, as a true master, or whether they lose such status in the throes of history due to the birth of the new epoch, which is not a calm, collective process, but a rather chaotic, dark period, in human history, where what is considered ''normal'' in the past, no longer fits the present, and the future, is stuck in this uncertain transition period of a changing, rapidly altering, culture going in places before deemed impossible by previous ages - it hasn't yet become the new period in but is a kind of past, but also a kind of phantom version of the future that is not yet the future yet, a transitional historical purgatory of Absolute Spirit that is neither what is to come nor what was.
