Great little review, I bought the G1W from your link and seem to have received a genuine one. Have had it 4 months now and had no issues whatsoever with it. The mount is still holding strong and hasn't budged since I first installed it 4 months ago. Am very impressed with the quality for the price and nearly never have to touch it. Following your advice about the mount feeling a bit easy to break, I generally don't remove the card or camera when downloading footage, I bought a long USB cable that i've neatly installed around the windscreen and goes into a Dual USB lighter socket which powers it like the normal power adaptor would. I can unplug the cable and plug it into my phone or tablet (Using a USB host cable) to download footage easily. I really recommend the setup.

Buy the G1W-C which stands for Capacitor. They have replaced the cheap battery with a Capacitor 1.5F. Now you don't to be afraid that the cheap battery will fail after 1 years or catch fire if you leave it on the hot sun in the summer.

Bought this camera after watching this review close to a year ago. It worked great and randomly stopped working properly about a month or two ago. I recommend this camera for first-time dash cam buyers if you're toying with the idea of having one in your car. The quality seemed alright but lacked a little in dark settings. Great intro camera but I don't think I'd buy another.

After almost two years I can say this dash cam is still working well. Night recording on unlit roads is poor, as for the rest I am satisfied. I tossed the Power adapter and used a USB wire instead as the adapter was causing radio reception problems with marginal stations. I didn't know about the class 10 problem which may explain some issues I was having. I have found that the camera leaves one file per directory when over writing so you'll need to format the card from time to time. Also with straight usb power it will go to pc mode when you restart the car after stalling or not fully shutting off the ignition, just power it off for a few seconds to fix it. The mount I have is the ball style which works well, it just doesn't stay on at -30 but nothing stays on when it is that old. Audio on mine is good enough to hear the surrounding noises and conversations in the car. Given how well it has performed over the last two years, I'd say this is a keeper, get one for your kids car.

I bought one of these about 6 months ago to put in my truck. It is my third dash cam and is by far the best one. In particular is the excellent night vision. The only things that have caused me any problems so far are just recently it will some times stop recording, and the mounting bracket only just bends round far enough to mount on the flat windscreen of the truck. It was money well spent for me.

+Mark Bhalay My G1W-C is almost 2 years old now, it survived 2 winters (-20 to -40C) and 1 Texas summer without a single problem. Make sure you buy one from a reputable seller to avoid fake ones. You can also check my channel to see this dash cam video quality. Still the best dash cam under $50 now I believe.

Believe it or not, this is one of the best dash cam footages that I've seen in you're reviews. The video image is very clean as well as clear, and you can easily read registration numbers on cars. I just purchased a Novatech G1W C on eBay, I was very careful to check the spec, and only considered units advertised as having NT96650 chip + AR0330 Lens. Theses were the most expensive G1W C Novatechs (45USD) , Lots of other G1W C Novtatechs advertised for as little as 25USD however the sellers made no mention of chip and lens type. I have to say I am delighted with this camera, it does everything I expected and more. My only worry is that sauna like conditions here in Thailand will kill it. Well done Techmoan, keep up the excellent work.

Curious point about NOT using class 10 cards I have had this issue with all the cheap n nasty dashcams where they just stop recording. I just wish there was a quality well built gopro ish dash cam. The market seems to be awash with some very nasty cameras that have very short lifespans. I'm starting to lose count of the dashcams I have had fail on me. As always with life it's by cheap..buy twice.

Just got me one of these Dash Cams and I must say.. it was a snap to get running... and recording.. the menu was simple to go through with your help that is... but I just put up my first video shot with it.. and can't wait to go to Yellowstone National Park with it.. I'm a little over a hours drive from there.. The mounting devise was a bit different.. mine has a swivel tightener.. The mount it'self is plastic.. as you said.. but if you take it slow and easy.. it should last .. fingers crossed.. I got mine in less than a week through Spy Tech... with shipping it was just over $70 USD... Thank you so much for the review.. I really needed to get me one.. and stop holding a camera and driving.. lol

Thanks Techmoan, glad you made the review about it ^-^ Your G1W got a few different stuff than i had. I had a older firmware so the time and date stamp was on the left side, but it's also possible for me to add my Licenseplate as text or a name etc. Then i also got a different suction cup. With a better quality and this nut screw thingy to fix it compleately. Also a different box and a really great manual with colored pictures etc. Also the microphone in mine is also loud and clear. I've just purchased this camera because of your review. I really like it. I will say that I got a 32 gig class 10 card for it and it seems to work fine with it. Now that I have this camera, I'm looking for one that will record out the front windshield and the rear window at the same time. One side note about the camera... The default menu setting was set to Chinese. I had a heck of a time trying to figure out the menu system to get it to go into English. That alone took me a little over 15 minutes.

I am blown away at the quality of this camera. While you thought lackluster I thought the "direct into sunlight" capability was particularly good. NOW mind you I don't have thousands of dollars to test dozens of camera's so I am comparing it to $30 to $40 (25 pound??) camera's for me this camera at $60 to $70 is an EXPENSIVE camera to me. for the price very very impressive. as good as a marcus? hell no. but a fraction of the price too :-) I DO wish their was a cheap GPS (speed in video overlay) unit available with this units day/night capabilities. IE around $100. they DO make the G1W-C version which uses a capacitor. no issues with heat then (the battery is what dies in the heat) I still want a Marcus 5. badly. but I don't have $320 to spend on one :-)

A couple of notes after buying and using this same dashcam myself: 1. I use a SanDisk 32gb class 10 micro sd card. It records perfectly to that card. I also tried an older 8gb class 4 card. The 8gb card would only record for 5 - 10 seconds and then quit. I would guess that your issue with your class 10 card was just a fluke incompatibility (as was my 8gb card.) 2. My camera didn't darken the scene as much as yours under direct sunlight. I would think the WDR setting has something to do with this. I believe mine is set to off. 3. I used a Sharpie (black permanent marker) to darken the chrome ring around the lens. I also blacked out the white cover over the light since I don't see myself using the light ever. 4. This is a super dashcam regardless of the price.

Had the a problem when I first got mine make sure you format card before setting to record. I drive a semi and let it run for 24 hours a day. Been running for 2 days straight no problems yet. Will make another post in a few weeks. I have the g1w-c the capacitor version of same camera.

Purchased the 'Monkton' G1WH (very similar to the G1W review above) from Amazon and fairly pleased so far with product. Positive side: The video quality both Day & Night is excellent and Bracket very secure. Negative: Camera locked and had to be reset on the first test, instructions very basic, battery life unplugged very short.

I have a rebranded version of this camera, just note that the (massive) transformer / power supply has awful shielding and when it was wired into my car fusebox, it destroyed my FM reception. Replacing it with a Belkin 12v adaptor and a decent cable solved the problem. Consider this if you plan to wire it in. Otherwise, camera is great.

Thanks for authoring this Channel. I've watched a few of your Videos and I'm going to subscribe. I did notice a couple of 'common themes' on your DashCam Videos. 1. The "G-Sensor" (you seem to always leave OFF) can deduce an impact or collision and will automatically record some seconds prior and after impact then save and lock this video file onto the SD Card. Another usage with better Software (and GPS Firmware) would usually be that the Device knows WHEN you turn a corner (otherwise the GPS would have to extrapolate the two lines derived from your course on the Map and assume that where they intersected is where you turned, which would not be very accurate). Also the G-Sensor would work correctly (assuming it was working at all) on round-a-bouts (a 'circle-turn', where you can not turn left (in North America, or (I presume) left in GB)). and the Device's Mapping Software ought to make a tiny 3/4 circle when you view the Map zoomed-in (this cheap Device no doubt has no such Software but better Devices would benefit from the G-Sensor being on). While the G-Sensor (if the Sensor Hardware is even present in the Device) marks the turn, of course the G1W does not seem to have GPS available so this particular Device is using the Firmware from a better Device (and in this particular case you can leave it off, otherwise it is better to have it on IF you have an integral GPS). In the case of the cheaper Device it is likely just a 'crash-sensor' and not a true "G-Sensor" (like most Mobile Phones have). 2. At 5:45 (and in MANY of your DashCam Videos) you mention that "I don't know how this is going to turn out on KZbin". It should be perfect; thats my answer. Check out a 3D Video I synthesized (using Computation Photography) from a DVD source (480P). Notice that the Audio Sync is perfect and the 3D Video (which you can watch in 2D if you do not have 'Cellophane Glasses' or a 3D TV) is pixel perfect and eyestrain free. I pride myself on making all my Videos reflect the quality of the Device being used as best as is possible; in the case of that Video it was created artifically with my Computer (from a 480P DVD source) and should be perfect when viewed at 1080P (or more if you have it). I've had mine for about 2 months, the construction is cheap and in the heat of summer it split on me, there's now a gap between the front and back piece, and it frequently freezes due to the heat, and if it doesn't free, the LCD goes crazy. I would stay away from this camera if you ever park your car in the sun. on the other hand, it takes decent video, and i've caught many drivers acting stupid on the road, it's kind of fun.

i've had this for 2 years and i like it. battery is crap so i have it connected to my car in a way that it turns on with my car and begins recording. it works best in room temp to freezing cold temp but it's awful in the heat. you get errors and need to remove and re-insert your memory card

As you had pointed out in the negative , the plastic mount broke after a year in tropical heat. Disappointed. Was my 1st dash cam which I only concentrated on looking at video quality and angle of view.

To anyone that lives in a hot climate (eg. north Aus), even if you have the capacitor version which can withstand high heat, the frame WILL MELT on hot days. The lens and internals are still in tact on mine, but the mount part and frame literally warped from the heat and now mine wont sit "square" on anymore

Great reviews!! I purchased the G1WC, It only lasted a month and a half in normal driving. it does seem very "cheap" feeling. the connector had issues at first, I had to pull the cord sideways at times for it to work. eventually it just died. I am now looking for a new one.

I still use the BlackBox-branded variants of these. For whatever reason both my G1W and G1W-C cameras work fine with 128GB cards (Samsung Pro Endurance). I had to format them specially as by default it can't even format the card due to the way they come from the factory: format as MBR, first partition starting at sector 8192, then put FAT32 on it with mkfs.vfat -F 32 -s 128 -R 1122 -n VOLUME1 -h 8192 -v /dev/sdx1 (Linux). I've had several running on 128GB cards for months and they've cycled many times through without error, and I've verified that I can play all clips on the card (this was to be sure it wasn't just say treating it like a 64GB card and overwriting parts of old clips once it hit the half-way mark). The G1W cameras (battery inside) have much better night exposure than the -C variants, for some reason. They are quite decent even on a dark neighborhood with just headlights. There is rattle from the buttons but that is fixed with a few pieces of Scotch tape over them. The focus can sometimes get disturbed, which is fixed by popping the case open and turning the lens (break the glue they put on the threads to hold it). I hook up HDMI output and point it at something outside across the street, zoom in using the zoom buttons on he camera, and adjust until sharpest. The mount is definitely a weak spot. I've had the cases of some pop open from this. I put two zip ties around either side, then one between those two ties to keep them from sliding off. This holds it together well by the mount (I do this for the rear camera that gets bumped when I move things in and out of the back of the vehicle).

hello, you have made so much reviews. I would recommend to ad a test from how far a camera footage can idetify a car plate (fsome seem to be readable 3-4 meters !). This would be an objective test against all these fake specs where 1080p are 720p or VGA cams or too compressed video files and so on. This would be a quick and easy but powerful test (day and night) to the optical value of a dash cam.

I wanted to buy one of these car cameras for a while now but there are so many models to choose from that I started watching as many of these video reviews as I could before I decide which one to buy. The first one I watched was your "A Beginners Guide to Dashcams" video, so I knew what to look for right from the start. As I was going through the videos I realised that buying directly from China was a big risk so I did a search on some domestic sites to see what I could find. That way I knew where they came from and it would be easier to solve the issues, should they happen. I found several types of cameras but some where immediately discarded because they didn't meet some of the criteria you said they should have, so I ended up with three choices: the G1W (between 35 and 45 euros), the SJ4000 (between 82 and 125 euros) and the SJ1000 (139 euros). Although I was looking for a camera to be used also as a helmet cam, the SJ1000 was the only one of the three that could be used out of the box for both car and bike but I was a bit put off by the price. I decided to go for a car camera only, for now, so my choice was the G1W and the cheaper one too, because the other one had an orange box. I just received it. It came in a blue and black box (so no "specifieations" :D), not this silver one. It's the 2014 version with the new chipset, which I think it's the same one that comes in the H and C models. My first impression when I took it out of the bag was: it's so...TINY! It only has L:110mm x H:45mm! After watching pretty much all the videos about it and reading comments of people saying they didn't like it because it sticked out too much, it was too visible from the outside (and I'm not referring to the bright ring around the lens), I was expecting something bigger. But not only the camera: the suction cup mount is also smaller than it looked in the videos and it's different from this one. It's the one with the ball joint and the security clip, like the ones you find on the DOD LS430W and other cameras. So, two pleasant surprises. It comes with the 2014.0611 firmware version (the latest one I knew of was the 2014.0118), which has some additions and a few changes comparing to this early version, the most noticeable being one "License No Set" function on the Settings menu, between Date/Time and Auto Power Off, that allows you to insert an eight character text (your name, nick name, car brand, etc), which will appear before the time stamp. One last but very important thing: inside the box there was a leaflet with a warn about the storage card. In corrected English, it states this: "- If the image appears distorted or the camera crashes it's because the storage card doesn't match the machine. There are many shoddy storage cards on the market and they can meet the mobile phone or computer read specifications but can't meet the higher demand of photography and video. - Please use an authentic Kingston Class10 storage card. Other brand's cards and Class4 cards are not recommended." Ok, I'm sure the camera will work fine with some other brand's cards but the interesting point here is that they recommend only Class10 cards, not the Class4 or 6 like for the early model on the video. I want to thank you, Techmoan, for your insightful reviews (I've watched quite a few of them) and for helping me decide which camera to buy.

ThunderWindz I leave it on when Im at a petrol station for a short while as it may use up your car batt power. Also your lighter will need to be powered up even with the ignition off to run this camera

Looks like the LS330W cam, at least the mounting is shorter and not a long connection between suction mount and cam itself. Easier to hide I guess behind your rear view mirror.

I ordered a G1W on your recommendation which will hopefully arrive in the next couple of weeks, cant wait, anyway i wondered if you might do a review on an OBD bluetooth adapter such as the ELM327 or something similar? I see you have done the hard wired type but the bluetooth one is cheaper and you get a great App called Torque free as well for most smartphones. I hope you do as i enjoy all your reviews Thanks

.bought the G1W CAM because techmoan says for the money its a cool car cam. Been using mine around 1 month and i love it, 1080 playback on my 50" tv is unreal. after black marking the lense surround I leave mine in car 24/7. i was curious about the 1 really hot day ( in car, temp was 37c ). Cam was in the heat for over 5 hours, worked fine. Would recommend this cam to any1, i got mine off ebay from some1 in England £39.00. from placing order took 3 days to arrive. TY techmoan

Also Sat navs, accuracy is difficult to comment on but ease of use and the fact that the price dosent seem to be dropping and the quality and features dont seem to be improving compared to other tech. My wife bought one for me 18 months ago. Sold under the brand name Black Box. Right out of the box, there was debris on the lense which produced a small shadow. The suction cup mount broke and had to be glued. Then the power supply broke. And it didn't like to work when the temp was below freezing.

Here are a couple of my observations: Techmoan does NOT mention some of the following which could help in deciding which of the manufactures makes the specific dashcam Techmoan is reviewing. The chipsets and the battery capacity, The lens chipset. The following are details which Techmoan does disclose in his review: G1W Car Dash Camera DVR: Lens- 120 degree lens, H264 encoded MOV File Format, WDR (Wide Dynamic Function), 3.0 mega pixel cmos Sensor, With all that said I have to question the following which I find on many of the G1W offered online. 2014y, Novatek NT96650- chipset. AR0330 Lens- 120 degree lens, (Some offer the 130 or 140 degree lens). 3.7V 320mah Battery, (Some offer the 200mAh, 300mAh or the 500mAh battery). H264 encoded MOV File Format, (Some offer the PMEG4 encoding). 3.0 mega pixel cmos Sensor, (Some offer the 5.0 mega pixel cmos Sensor). Note: the windscreen mount in the video is NOT a ball joint, (Some offer a ball joint). Note: the version is 2013.1017, (Not 2014). Note: Do NOT use a class 10 or UHS-1 MicroSD card, DO use class 4 or 6. If you buy a G1W, Please mention if you get the same results and from where you bought your unit. That will help others in finding a good unit. Thank you

I bought this camera a few weeks ago and its still a very good camera. They put a new software on it which works very good, but it has also a few new functions which aren't mentioned in the manual. (like ldw (i really don't know what this means)). And it seems like it is not possible to lock a file, which is really annoying because the 32 GB card is very fast full and it starts overwriting. But they also fixed some issues. The rotation on the mount for example isn't very loose and the sound quality is much better. Still a good and cheap Dashcam (i paid 22 Euro(about 24 US$) for it)

However, the video quality is really as good as shown in this video and that what cares for me.
