Just to let you know they assume that you don't take the torque converter off it stays in the transmission, you take the bolts off before you even pull the motor this all being constructive btw

Yeah I know now, thank you. I have changed the title to how to NOT remove a torque converter. Thanks for the help, multiple people have said the same thing. After going back, I missed pages in the service manual and it says the little black door is to get access to loosen the torque converter first before removing the tranny. We for sure did it wrong.

They did it backwards. The torque converter should have been unbolted from the flex plate before separating the transmission. Ie the torque converter stays with the tranny not the engine. Installing the transmission onto the torque converter the way they did it, will cost you about 700$ for a new torque converter and a new transmission pump because if they don’t seat (no way to tell and hear clicks when seating the converter) it will trash both. The service manual is correct, these guys just did it backwards. Even looking at their picture of the service manual shows the transmission not the engine.

But hey I’m sure I would have made the same mistake when I performed my first appendectomy if I downloaded the instructions from the inter web. What that black door is actually called is the "Clutch Inspection Plate." I only know because when I completed my motor swap, I noticed I could see the ground on my new motor and not the old. So I called Inifiniti to ask what the part was called and ended up getting a new one since mine was FULL of old burnt clutch dust. So it's a good idea to check up on that every now and again.

Interesting, now I'm connecting the dots. On lambos they can check the clutch disc to give an estimation of how much clutch life is left. I always wondered, how can they do that without dropping the tranny and now I get it. So even the G35 has a " clutch inspection plate" to tell how much clutch disc is left. Next time I'm under my car, I will look for this black door to check my clutch disc life. That makes sense the black door is on both manual and automatic transmissions.

I think its cool how you show some people on torque converter removal. I,ve help my brothers a few times on installing TC and auto trans. or removing.plus manual trans. we never had instructions. Plus converting auto to manual-vice versa.got sick of changing clutches .my brothers 68 holden manaro blew up 2 TH350. and one TH400 trans .the engine was a hi-pf chevy 350. end up installing a higher hi-stall TC . heavy tho. 3 of us under the cars lifting

I did not know how to do it and I typed in youtube for 350z or g35, no video popped up. I figured, well I won't be the last person looking for this info so I should include it in a video. You should remove the t bolts before you pull the engine and leave it in the trans getting it lined up and properly seated this way tho can be done is very difficult and time consuming. You guys are not professionals but I'm glad you figured it out and gave me a laugh, atleast you will never forget to remove those bolts before removing the engine next time XD

I am DIY and accidentally went a head of myself by taking the engine and transmission out first on a 2018 Hyundai Tucson. I couldn't get the torque converter off the engine. And gave a slight crack on the tip of the converter. Will this be a serious issue that needs replaced? Or will she drive?

The correct directions are listed in the Factory Service Manual, section AT - Automatic Transmission page 254, step 13. Don't blame the FSM just because you didn't read it properly :) You printed off the transmission disassembly directions when you should have been following the transmission removal section.

Motordyne, when you placed the torque converter into the transmission as shown in the video, did you have to redo the installation to get the converter to engage the transmission properly? Did you have any problems getting the transmission to bolt onto the block?

I finally watched the vid all the way through. I couldn't take it any more when you guys were trying to take the torque converter off. Have a good look at that illustration again that was dead ass wrong! Seriously get some professional advice first! You guys might have fucked up putting it back together because the torque converter should have been seated on the pump shaft of the trans first! Then mount the trans to the engine then torque converter bolts. I hope you guys didnt fuck up the trans because thats a really nice car!

what the name of the tool used to hold the flywheel in place so it don't turn while you are unbolting it? its a good tool to use instead of holding it from the crankshaft pulley nut which usually unbolts

You can use a strap wrench on the crank pulley. Much easier to pull the sparkplugs before turning the motor so you aren't fighting engine compression.

I’ve been in the transmission repair business for many years and it’s people like you that makes me not sell transmissions carry out the torque converter goes in the transmission first and 3 things have to be lined up first the input shaft splines then the stator splines a then the pump gears doing what you did will break or damage the front pump gears or rotor if it’s a vane style pump

That service manual is telling you how to pull the torque converter from the transmission. You should remove the bolts from the flex plate then remove the tranny with the torque converter. You don’t install the tranny with out the torque converter installed and seated. Doing it the opposite way you’re doing is a good way to fry your tranny pump

Well my problem is,the engine seized up,my goofball uncle drive it without oil and it super seized the crank to the bearings.Wont took head off,to make room.But oil pan won't come off no matter how high you pick up engine it's a 2008 s-10 .So basically I have no choice but this.Either that or lift the cab 3 inches to give me that extra room.wanted to take oil pan off to remove the rod bearing caps to free the engine.

New comment, about the torque converter. Before separating the tranny from the engine remove the lid from the window that exposes the back of the torque converter and remove all 4 bolts. This way the torque converter stay on the input-shaft of the tranny. Don't bend the inputshaft or else you need new seals for your stupidity. I did that mistake once, but i've done maybe 45 transmission replacement , word of advice

I got a off topic question which is really the better motor the rev up or non rev up I’ve met people who say they’re non rev up smokes rev ups all day then some say the non rev up can’t keep up with their rev ups can u inform me on which is the better motor

I own a rev-up. From the factory Rev-ups came with 300HP, non-revs from the factory came with 280HP. The automatics are slower and have less power. Non-rev redlines are 6.5k, REV-UPs redline is 7k and HR motors are 7.5k redline. Rev-ups added variable valve timing to the exhaust camshaft, that's why the front of the engine looks different with 2 humps vs. 1. Motordyne G35 ive done the research on all the engines I had a 2004 g35 coupe auto with the non rev up loved it super torquey and was quick enough for a daily I currently have a 2008 g37s with the vhr with 330 hp and I believe 279 torque don’t quote me on that but I’m looking into getting a cheap 350z but don’t know if I should go rev up or non rev up i like the torque of the non rev up and the pull of the vhr in high revs but I’ve never drove a rev up so I’m stuck on which to get either rev up or non rev up

Y'all should have done that when you dropped the transmission, it's 10times harder on the floor than in the car.its 4 bolts and the manual wasn't wrong, you were, it was giving you instructions on how to remove it from the transmission.

@@yc1825 I did that last week on my f250. Live and learn I guess. TC didn't seat properly and I ended up burning my pump. Glad I know this now. I have an old pump off my old transmission though so it didnt dig into my pockets too much but still sucks having to filter the new trans fluid I had just put in and all that. I could have saved a ton of time by asking a few more questions lol

It’s talking about the rotating and pulling the tq out of a transmission, only realistic reason to pull the tq out with the engine is if it jumped time and locked up and you cannot turn the engine to get the bolts with it in the car.

@@luisavelar9883 my point was normally you leave the torque converter in the front of the transmission and just take out the flywheel to torque converter bolts and the bellhousing bolts and use your fingers to push the torque converter back into the transmission and pull the engine out the top

Sometimes it makes it easier to put a hydraulic jack with a piece of wood on it under the transmission so you can adjust it around

In Arizona, if you do not have a check engine light, you pass emissions. Car is dyno tuned, so no check engine light. An untuned car will throw a check engine light with ART pipes.

Yep, P0420 code uh? I did the same thing when my cats went out, CATS are very expensive. Like $1,600 for both and they will in the long run, fail again. ART pipes never fail and are much cheaper than a new set of CATS.

removing your converter this way can damage the transmission front pump but not always. Make sure when youre installing the converter you rotate it in the transmission until it clicks 3 times and seats flush. The way these guys are installing it will damage the transmission. I made this same mistake on my first project car.

Oh my gosh. The torque converter is supposed to be unbolted from the fly wheel before unbolting the bellhousing bolts and stays on the trans whenever removing the engine or trans when its an automatic. Why, so that you dont fuck up the pump on the trans! C'mon guys thats what the torque converter pulls straight off from!

Thats backwards buddy sorry but thats backwards touqeconverter needs to be foreward put it in the belhouse shaft install the converter forewards put some automatic fluid on the converter front alignment shaft that slips in the crankshaft slid it in there and bolt the bell house back on then intall the engine and the transmission its sutch a gigantic pain to do but its possible. Thats the worst transmission design ever to put the converter backwards so they break dumb design make it forewards not backwards please its a painful design flaw. Dude i can see the converter is shot from here 4:04 its burnt out from that design flaw.
