My mom got me a PS2 in late 2001 and I played my Dreamcast more for a while, one of the big reasons she bought it was because of the DVD player. Truthfully back then, i was loving playing Dreamcast. I agree with a lot of what people are saying here had Dreamcast had a DVD player, I truly believe Sega would still be making consoles to this day. As great as Dreamcast was it not having a DVD player and Playstation 2 having one was what killed it, because the games were awesome and back then the 2K series sports games were much better then the EA Sports games

It's such a rotten and unfortunate thing that the Dreamcast failed. I never played this system in its heyday, but about 5 or 6 years ago I picked up on second hand at a retro gaming shop for about $40. My god was I missing out! I don't know what it is, but I love gaming on the Dreamcast. As for party fun...shit let me tell you, EVERYTIME I bring this thing to a party and we hook it up, everyone loves it. It allows us to enjoy games like Hydro Thunder, Dead or Alive 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Sega GT, Tony Hawk 1 & 2, Sonic shuffle..... It usually ends up staying plugged in all night long and all of the PS3's and 360's/PS4 Xbones etc go totally ignored. We all end up having a blast and laughing our asses off having an awesome time. Even people that don't game hop on my Dreamcast and love it. That alone is truly magic, and for some odd reason, it seems that no other system can ever truly duplicate that magic.

yea man the Dreamcast I feel like never got to hit its stride. Toward the end the games were looking better and had better use of its power. Idk what it was but that console had a great way of showing depth of field. Say what you want about sports games but they did a great job of showing that technique. I got my Dreamcast when the ps2 came out. with that said I could.walk into a retro store or even a major retailer and spend 20 bucks on a stack of great games.

E3 1998 ran from 28th to 30th May 1998, while Sega officially unveiled the Dreamcast in Japan at the New Challenge Conference on May 21st 1998 - and Edge UK magazine, issue 60 (July 98, released in June as magazines always released dated a month ahead), did a multi page spread on Dreamcast with the front cover “SEGA IS DEAD LONG LIVE DREAMCAST”. I don't appreciate how this video was clearly biased towards stolar. They made a victim out of him that got fired by his Japanese ''overlord'' but they didn't explain why he was fired in the first place. He butchered the launch date by abruptly announcing it outta blue without letting the retailers know beforehand sothey can get their stocks ordered properly, which made them mad that Walmart even boycotted the Dreamcast and refused to sell it. He also went against the price suggested by SoJ and sold the system at 199 which was disastrous for Sega because it meant that they had to sell far more units to be profitable at that price point. Then we have infamous blunder where he literally said that the Saturn wasn't the future of Sega, effectively destroying any hopes for its success in the NA market, not to mention him actively preventing the DC from getting great Japanese ports because ''lol weeb''.
@rainehappy70973 жыл бұрын
Cheaper price let them sell more units though. The Saturn was priced so high that nobody could afford it the minute it launched prematurely. Stolar made some bogus decisions but SOJ is stubborn as heck. They let things slide with the Genesis and that sold really well. Genesis was priced well and had excellent pack in games. Their president at the time was Kalinske and he really knew his stuff compared to Stolar. I think what should have happened is they should have avoided the Sega CD and 32X and just focused on Genesis and Game Gear until the Saturn came out. It still wasn't that long of a wait considering how closely the 32X came out to the Saturn's release date. It was a collosal waste of money for games that were better ported on Saturn like the Sega Ages collection. Not only that, but SOJ refused to use tech that ended up with different companies that would have made the Saturn cheaper to produce and improved performance exponentially. Nintendo is just as guilty during this time with mistakes made with the N64, but at least it was easier to program for. It just cost a lot more. One thing the N64 did have though was Super Mario 64. The Saturn didn't have a solid 3D Sonic game that was completely original or a fullblown 3D platofrmer on par with Super Mario 64. I really have no idea how well Sonic XTreme would have done, but there was a lot of hype for it back then. At least we got Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast, which was probably even better than anything Nintendo made up to that point. Add that to it being a launch title alongside games like Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi which were arcade perfect, and you have the strongest selling console at launch. What's even better is Dreamcast games have aged beautifully compared to Saturn games. The only games I can think of on Saturn from launch that are still worth playing are the Virtua games and Daytona USA, even with the limitations at the time. It was all on the hardware being too expensive and the software being underwhelming. Genesis meanwhile was doing perfect. They had games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Disney's Aladdin that were selling like hotcakes. They were also games that didn't require add ons like the Sega CD or 32X. Again it would have been better if the Sega CD and 32x were just ignored and focus was put on Genesis and Saturn. If they had done this, Dreamcast would have had more money to burn and most likely stuck around a few more years even alongside the Sony PS2. There's even concept designs for a Dreamcast with a DVD player add on. If they had made a second Dreamcast as an update with the DVD included, it would have put them back at the top.
@mohammedganai96362 жыл бұрын
@@rainehappy7097 There are so many games you're looking on the Saturn side: Radiant Silvergun, the Panzer Dragoon trilogy, Guardian Heroes, Capcom's 2d ports. The PS1 couldn't handle the latter without major compromises (or at all with RS). Also, the Saturn pad was a masterpiece, while the Dreamcast, while usable for 3d, was otherwise magnitudes more clunky.

What I Wanna Know's Why Did The Dreamcast Controller Have That Screen in it
@cartergamegeek8 жыл бұрын
It's a VMU. It's the Visual Memory Unit. It's a Memory Card that can be removed to play some simple mini games. It was a system within a system. Not many games used the VMU for mini games. And you could buy Dreamcast Memory cards that were not a VMU. It was used a bit more in Japan. But the idea was cool. It was nice being able to remove the VMU and interact with some games. But the Dreamcas was short lived so that was not really done. Plus with the normal Dreamcast Memory Cards it made VMU stuff tricky to make because not everyone had a VMU. As a bonus it lights up and has displays things. Normally just a logo or character face.

Jodee Rebecca Davey You're welcome. As someone trying to get going on KZbin i enjoy teaching people about gaming. It's nice to see all my random gaming knowledge being put to good use. I'm a nerd that picked up a lot of random gaming facts over the years. Part of the reason i wanted to get going on KZbin i thought some of my random gaming knowledge might teach people something. My main drive is i wanted my best friend Sean and my brother Carson along for the ride too. I thought our interactions while gaming were worth recording. So we can get random and off topic a lot. But we all have a good bit of gaming knowledge. In the right moments we can easily teach people random and interesting gaming facts. It's fun interacting with people. And it's fun teaching people. The world of gaming is interesting. It's crazy to watch games and even consoles live and die before a lot of people are even born. Our passion is gaming. And hopefully in a month or two i will finally be able to record and edit videos. And maybe all of our gaming knowledge can be put to good use. I was thinking of using Patreon to make money if the KZbin Channel started doing well. Anyway i enjoyed helping you. It reminded me why i'm trying to get going on KZbin.

Jodee Rebecca Davey I just need a Uninterruptible Power Supply and Sony Vegas Pro 13. Then Sean and Carson need free time. But i'm close. If things work out we might be making videos by next month. This is all i need. I have an Elgato HD and a Blue Yeti Mic. So i can record. I just can do advanced editing without Sony Vegas Pro 13. And the Uninterruptible Power Supply will help keep my stuff safe in case the power goes out. That is a good thing to have.

20:37 not exactly true. PS2 became legendary for a reason. In 2001 alone PS2 launched GT3, Twisted Metal Black, Ico, Silent Hill 2, Jak and Daxter, Devil May Cry, GTA3, MGS2, FFX etc. Playstation owners had plenty to be happy about that Dreamcast owners could only dream of.
@DraculaXHunter1015 жыл бұрын
Man, that's not the point. The Dreamcast actually pushed boundaries for online titles, if it wasn't for Dreamcast I don't think online gaming at the moment would be as powerful as it could be. Plus, the Playstation 2 launch was pretty ass. If it wasn't for the DVD player. It would have never sold as well as it did in 2000. It had some revolutionary games like Shenmue and Jet Set Radio. Fantastic graphics for the time. Some of the best fighting games ever produced like Soul Calibur, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Power Stone. Playstation 2 was great, but the Dreamcast really was ahead of its time in 1998.
@AgentMorgan20104 жыл бұрын
The Dreamcast was dead by 2001, so your comment, and all those great games you're mentioning, are completely immaterial. In the year 2000, when it launched, the PS2 had jack and shit. A DVD player and backwards compatibility for PS1 games. That's what the vast majority of PS2 early-adopters were doing with their PS2 that year. Meanwhile, Dreamcast was enjoying a kick-ass library of quality titles that were fun and utterly unique. PS2's launch lineup was utter shit, and nothing on it at that time even looked as good as anything on Dreamcast. Ugly jaggies like a mother fucker. The PS2 wasn't even worth owning until the tail-end of 2001, when all those seminal titles finally released that holiday season, and the Dreamcast was already long dead and buried.

Bug was corny compared to Sonic. You could slap Sonic in Bug and it would have sold better. Sonic has a cool personality. Bug feels like discount Gex.

as a Sega fan, I had these complains; the machine was white, it looked like a Nintendo machine. the controllers were not the 6 buttons I was used to. I hated the memory cards gimmick, in practice, it was flawed. the battery did not last long, it felt cheap. a dvd drive would have been more attractive as an entertainment system. where was the next gen streets of rage and golden axe? the Sega name was tainted, and bad rumors inspired no confidence. if I was Sega.... I d build a very cheap console based on the dreamcast architecture, but with built in memory. a $100 - 150 price point with just Sega in house hits from all their history starting from the genesis and arcade. I d market it same as the edgy Sega scream style it was known for. I d try to get the old EA titles that still play nice today like; the strike and road rash series. populous, syndicate and c&c. it d be a very affordable retro console, as much fun as a 67 mustang. I d love to play these games but, I m not willing to find old genesis saturn consoles. at $100, it would be irresistible to get it all in one shot.

If Sega scraped the Sega CD, 32X and launch the Saturn on September 1995 for $199 or $299. Sega will be not lose money and lasted for the future generations. But instead overall the Saturn was 👎 and the Dreamcast was 👍 and but the problem the #1 biggest gunshot for the Dreamcast was the PS2
@rainehappy70973 жыл бұрын
Add that to PS2 being backwards compatible with PSone. Nintendo and Sega didn't have consoles with backwards compatibility at the time. Gamecube did eventually with the Game Boy Player but you had to buy it seperately. XBOX could play DVDs but you needed a fancy dodad and a remote.

SOJ was stubborn too. Kalinske left because he wasn't in control anymore. He helped the Genesis sell in the US whereas in Japan it didn't do so well. When SOJ took over in the Saturn era, it was the other way around. Dreamcast was like the best of SOJ but it sold better in the US. Kind of weird how that happened.

Sega's burned reputation doomed it. Screwed up previous consoles and gamers didn't forgive
@adamhovey4077 жыл бұрын
TheKeithvidz this is my biggest problem with the Sega Saturn, it's not that the Saturn itself was bad, mind you, it's that the launch was a disaster, and it's because of that disastrous launch, that Dreamcast didn't achieve the popularity it should have had.

PS2 doesn't match the graphics of the Dreamcast. Just compare Crazy Taxi on both formats.

That's a fool comparission, because "Crazy Taxi" was just a port. Take a look at graphics on "Metropolis Street Racer" and "Gran Turismo 3". Both exclusives games.
