Ray, thank you for explaining your work in such detail. Can't wait to see the kw Vespa videos and the transmitter for the National HRO. If my National NC-2-40D didn't weigh 27.2 Kg (60 pounds) I'd ship it to you to tune up and study. The image of the NC-2-40D on RigPix is my radio. I sent it to them in 2002 due to them not having a picture of it at that time. Amazing fact: the NC-2-40D radio in 1947 cost £2,691.77 ($3417.66 US). Amazing. Cheers, mate.

I remember back in the 70s and 80s a few radio enthusiast mates, always built their projects in a wooden case if possible. Home made audio amplifier on the shelf in a wooden case, looked good in the lounge. Metal boxes were very plentiful back in the day, and there were loads of them in GWM radio shop as you know. I loved spending a Saturday afternoon in that place, even if I hadn't bought anything.

I had a kw vespa with it's cardboard power supply! I seem to remember once building a valve amplifier on a cardboard chassis!

Has anyone mentioned the Australian connection with these HRO receivers? Around the beginning of WW2 our RAAF was looking for a communications receiver and to this end Kingsley Radio of Melbourne (Australia) submitted a design, the CR11. If you see a photo of this radio, it is unmistakable as a knock-off of the HRO. The design was accepted and went into production to be known in RAAF service as the AR7. It didn’t take HRO long to hear about this knock-off and they began legal proceedings against Kingsley for copyright infringement. Long story short WW2 meant that the USA needed communications receivers and a license was arranged for Kingsley and they were told to get on with it. By wars end some 3200 receivers had been produced most going to Australian military use; army, navy and air force with a small number going to US forces in the Pacific. After the war many AR7 receivers went into commercial service, then later they hit the surplus market and became a favorite of ham radio operators.
