Just a heads up in regards to the 2.0 update. If you're running the G9 with version 1.3 firmware and are using Service Mode, you have unlimited record time for all 1080p and 4k settings. If you update to version 2.0 you will lose unlimited record time and revert back to 10 mins for 4k60p and 29:59 for all other settings even in Service Mode. Personally, while I am disappointed to see this loss of unlimited record time, I still think it's worth it for the 10 bit video and other features that have been added. If you don't care about 10 bit video and prefer to keep unlimited record time in Service Mode instead you may not want to update the firmware. Edit: To put the G9 into Service Mode, follow the instructions in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqLdc4qalr5paZY

wow so thanks for clearing that up! it's really unfortunate that the g9 is capped at 10 mins and 30 mins because I think the camera is capable of recording past that without overwhelming the cpu and cooling system! here's to hoping there's some kind of hack or other update to fix that!

@@KimCruz1 Yeah, I did a test record one time. I recorded a video clip for an hour straight in 4k60p on the G9 and had no issues. Sure, the camera was a little warm afterwards but nothing to be concerned with. I updated my post and included a link to a video showing how to activate Service Mode on the G9.

I've only ever shot 1 wedding before but it seems to be a pretty step 1 step 2 step 3 kind of job aye? I think the G9 will be fantastic for that and the AF is more responsive on that camera because of the newer hardware and the colors are better for sure. Joe Marano when you go into video record mode on the bottom right corner there’s usually a number, either 29:59 or 10 mins in 4K. If there’s no video recording limit, it’s just how much time the camera can record with the amount of space you have left on your sd card ie 1 hour 30 mins etc...

I own a g85, I shoot mainly video but do shoot photos of birds and other animals. Should I update to the g9 or gh5. Or save more and go FF
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man it depends on what you wanna do long term. For me the only benefits from ff is the shallower depth of field (sometimes a disadvantage in video with everything razor thin- for photos it’s more manageable) and low light ISO performance. The main drawbacks? Price of the camera, price of the lenses, filters, gimbals your might buy, and then the size and weight. If I shoot mainly video, you can hardly go wrong with the m43 system- the gh5 is a full on video powerhouse and chances are people rarely max out it’s power. The G9 is also a great option right now with the firmware update! Both of these cameras are a step up from the G85- better build, higher end features like full sensor read out in 4K and more importantly to me, higher bit rate recording in 1080p and 4K. Those are things that are ‘nice to have’ for many people, but essential for aspiring filmmakers. If you want to progress further in film making, both of these cameras are great! If the G85 is doing the job and you don’t need anything more, save your cash and go on holiday instead! After the recent firmware update, it’s much harder to pick between the G9 and GH5 but I think I’ve settled on this: if you’re mainly shooting for KZbin and do some part time gigs on the side, the G9 is more than enough. If you’re on KZbin and do more serious gigs for clients and want to focus on the client part more- the GH5 still takes it over the G9. As for the photography side of things the G9 is better focusing in both stills and video so I would go with this is if this is a big priority. Hope this helps man, it’s a great time to be alive!

I wonder if the G series is going to replace what the GH has been doing and the GH series might end up being what the GH5s is doing. Example, G10 will replace/upgrade the GH5, and the GH6 will be the GH5s upgrade. Then there are 2 'pro' line ups. I could easily live with this!

Hey man if you’re really into film making and need all the flexibility of frame rates, bit rates and the expand ability of the microphone adapter Panasonic sells, I think the Gh5 new is probably the best best (it’s only a 100 dollars difference). I tend to not get used bodies becuase they break easier than lenses. If you don’t need all of that, get the G9 new! It’s the best overall camera if you aren’t a hardcore film maker, and many video professionals will be happy to add it to their own kit!

@KimCruz1

Hey man it’s nice to have but honestly not necessary- I still film most of my stuff in 1080p- in fact everything I film is still 1080p unless I need 4K for something specific (this includes client work)! As for the 30 vs 60fps, same deal, the 60 FPS is nice to have but remember you can shoot the same stuff in 1080p. However in terms of cameras the G9 is a beast and for what you’re doing it’s perfect!

@KimCruz1 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man will do! Honestly it depends on what you want to do in the future! If you’re into video, it’s definitely worth the investment but will you necessarily benefit from it now? Not necessarily. The main thing you’ll get from the G9 is the better AF which can be used for b roll but probably not for interviews (better use manual focus), and the higher bit rates which will let you color the footage more (but not necessarily better). But if you don’t mind the extra expense and extra size and weight sure why not! Just FYI, my kit right now is just the G85 and the GX9 which is just enough for the client jobs that I do. I love both, I use the gx9 when I need something small, I had the g85 when I need the flip screen and a mic jack, but for every shoot I always have both- so there’s no ‘perfect camera’. But if you need a camera you can grow into, one camera that can do almost everything you need, get the G9!

Panasonic makes great video cameras, but my OM-D EM5 MKIII blows away my G9 when I try to shoot birds in flight, and other fast moving things. Yes the grip is mediocre even with the plastic grip added. Panasonic's lack of phase detect auto focus is the issue.

My fervent hope is that Panasonic comes out with a Fz 2500 mk II which is focused more towards the ' stills shooter ' & in pace with the Sony one in. sensor bridge cameras. I own a Fz2500 with it's internal zoom lens structure ( doesn't trombone out - really great ! ) but I'd like to see it come closer to the Sony RX10 mk 4's f2.4 ~ 5 , 24 ~ 600mm Zeiss lens in quality. Add some 6K photo & a bit of weather sealing & a few other G9 features & I'll be queued up at the door before opening time with money in hand. I much prefer capturing far off animals & birds with a similar camera like the Fz2500 & not having to lug around a 3.5 lb 100 ~ 400 lens I'll be buying the G9 - for just under a $1000 - next week. I'll be sure to ck that it has the latest firmware.Thanks for listening. Well done video.

Can someone give me an example of footage that needs more than 10minutes uninterrupted 4K footage (as in using more than 10 minutes of single shot)? Isn't it that possible G9 will restart recording after 10 minutes (or operator)?
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 5 жыл бұрын
hi Agnes yes the recording can just be pressed again but there are one or two scenarios where I need it but your mileage may vary. The first is recording a youtube video in either 4k (10 mins) or 1080p (30 mins). I know my videos are usually less than 5 mins long, but the actual recording can take anywhere between 20 mins (a very very good day), and on a bad day, an hour lol! Of course I can just get up and start recording again but there's some issues with that- mainly with the focus because with my set up I'm only using manual focus and sometimes the depth of field is shallow- so even if my computer chair (on wheels) moves a bit, the focus could be off for the next bit. Also, it's a pain to be interrupted to man the camera, not to mention the risk of not realizing the recording already stopped and you've been talking. The second bit is related to conferences/lectures/workshops. While not specifically related to 4k (although it can be), it's another way that I actually use my camera for long form recording and while admittedly this is done in 1080p most of the time, it's nice to have that flexibility overall. Anyway, sorry not exactly related to longer than 10 min recording in 4k but just long form in general from my use case!

Any kind of play or theatrical performance usually runs longer than 10 minutes. Any long form interview can last for longer than ten minutes, and if you're using the G9 as a B-cam away from the main camera, you don't want to have to run to the B-cam in mid-interview, it's really unprofessional and disruptive. Back in the day of the Canon 5D Mark II, it would only shoot up to 12 minutes in 1080p before shutting itself off, and interviews often go longer than that. Yes, you can restart the camera, but why do that if you don't have to? Panasonic cameras like the GH3 and GH4 were complete gamechangers after using the 5D Mark II for so many reasons.

raksh9 thanks I forgot about that! I shoot a fair amount of interviews and I don’t always have the luxury of a second cam so if I did at least I could cut away to the second camera while I restart the first.. anyway I generally take interviews at 4K 24p so I think that means the G9 will go 30 mins for that, but still, there will be interviews that run for longer thanks for that!

the 10 minute recording limit is for 40k/60 ? or all the 4k recording modes ? I am interested in using this for a controlled atmosphere like film, documentary / music video . I can personally testify a church sermon can easily go over 30 minutes straight . Live events like a stageplay you can stop recording at moments . when I had the fz1000 which had the 30 minute limit I would ask the person in charge if anything will go over that time.. the g9 with update looks like my new camera at this great price !!

@@305unleashedgraphix3 Ten minute limit for 4k 60p, 30 minute limit for 4k 30/24p, from what I understand.

Woulda been cool if Panasonic went with apsc instead of ff. Anyways. I don’t know specs all that well like most other pros but if you’re hyped then I’m hyped. Gotta update my g9 soon!

Yes definitely! What I’m excited about is how much more latitude you can have in correcting colors if they aren’t where you want them coz when you edit the colors on 20-30 mbs footage, they break apart sooo easily compared to high but rates! Also, high frame rates woohoo!

@@A1Bokeh that must be the HLG profile- so many things to test now! For the lens this was done on the sigma 18-35 with a viltrox adapter!

Kim Cruz ya man. I have a sigma 18-35 Nikon mount with a speedbooster. Honestly I’m not that into it kind of regret not going with a viltrox or metabones :(
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 5 жыл бұрын
@@A1Bokeh lol i kinda know what you're talking about! honestly i only shot with prime lenses before because of the low light situation with m43 and never considered the sigma because while it's actually affordable, the METABONES was basically the same price as the sigma! yikes! so i finally dipped in when i saw the viltrox for 200 but you know what? it's really not perfect- there's random times i can't reach infinity focus even though I've turned the lens element inside of the adapter to the maximum, and overall the AF just freaks out when i focus from time to time! i guess it shows that it's always better to get native lenses- but if you really need it, at least you can adapt lenses to m43 for cheap i.e. the sigma gives me 24mm, 35mm and 50mm at F1.2- and if i bought the olympus primes of 17mm 1.2, 25mm 1.2, and 45mm 1.2 (or even with the panasonic 12mm 1.4). that would've been well over 3 times the cost!!

Panasonic marketing choices about the GX series were a little bit sad. My GX8, in my opinion, is the last serious hybrid GX body that can compete with the G series: it was a better G7, and a lower GH4. But then, after the release of the smaller GX80, they decided to create a more precise gap between G and GX cameras: they added the G80 and G9 to the most pro and overall versatile G series, and decided to leave the GX lineup for those who are searching for a small, comfortable run-and-gun traveler body, without too much pro features. Or at least, that's my thought.

Hunter Production yeah and I’m not too happy that they left the gx bodies without a mic jack! They had it on the gx8 and instead of putting a normal 3.5mm in the gx85 they just removed it all together lol
