East West Metro Tunnel is an under construction underwater river tunnel of Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal. The river tunnel is construct underneath Hooghly river. Tunnel length is 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) and width is 5.5 metres (18 ft). A 520m stretch of the tracks will go through a tunnel under the Hooghly. The roof of the tunnel would be about 30 metres from the ground level. The tunnel will be completed in 2018.The tunnel will be first underwater river tunnel in India and South Asia . The tunnel used by East West Metro Line for metro rail service and constructed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation.
The section between Sealdah and Mahakaran station was realigned due to inability of GoWB to provide land on the surface along the original route. Even on the new alignment a station planned at Wellington had to be dropped as GoWB was unable to provide the required land on the surface. Work at Howrah Maidan have started in March 2016. The section between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade station has been built by Afcons - Transtonnelstroy JV team, two tunnel boring machines from Herrenknecht are being used to dig the tunnel. This section passes through the river Hooghly for a distance of 520 meters. The section under the river is at a depth of 30 meters (roof to ground distance) whereas the average roof to ground distance is 17 meters. The Howrah station on the west side of the river will be at a depth of 30 meters. Tunnelling started from Howrah Maidan side. On 23rd May one of the TBM named Rachna completed the tunneling under the Hoogly river in 36 days. The other TBM named Prerna also completed the tunnelling work under the river on 21-June-2017. There were some concerns during tunnelling under Brabourne road as the tunnel would pass within 100 meters of heritage structures and there were also many old and dilapidated buildings in this section. KMRC received permission from Archaeological Survey of India in June 2017. Residents and shops in the old building were temporarily shifted and the buildings were reinforced before construction of tunnel. Construction of tunnel till Mahakaran station was completed in November 2017. For the Mahakaran-Esplanade section tunnelling of one of the tunnel have been completed on 23 March 2018 the other tunnel have also been completed by April. In this sections also shops and residents of the buildings have been shifted in phased manner before tunnelling. The Esplanade - Sealdah section will be executed by ITD-ITD Cementation JV and was scheduled to start in May 2018.

বন্ধু আমি ও আমার বন্ধু Burdwan জেলার ৯ জন স্রমিক কাজ করে ছিলাম এক দিন এই জারমানি মেসিনে তৈরীতে কাজ করে ছিলাম আমি ছিলাম পেনটার লাল সবুজ ইলুদ ব্লু সব ধরনের পাইপ আমরা রং করেছি আর সব থেকে আমার অবদান হলো সামনে মাটিকাটা গোল লাল রং এর কাটার টা আমিই একা রং করেছি ওটা শুধু আমার একা হাতের রং । আর মিসিন ছিলো পিস পিস একটা একটা টুকরো জয়েন করে তৈরী হয় ঐ গোল কাটার টা তে অনেক বড়ো বড়ো নাট ইয়ার টাইট দিয়েছি আমরা বাংগালিরা । আজ তোমার ভিডিও দেখে পুরানো দিনের কথা মনে পড়ে গেলো আজো আমরা পসতাই । আমাদের কাজ দেখে দেশ বিদেশ জার্মান লিয়ে যাবে বলে ছিলো তখন কিনতু আমাদের পাসপোর্ট ছিলো না আমরা কলকাতার মেসিনটা প্রথম তৈরী করি. জার্মানির কমপানি (হেরিন কেন ইচিটের) মাধ্যমে । চেন্নাই এ তে প্রথম কমপানির খুলেছিলো । জার্মান থেকে কলকাতা ডাইরেট মেসিন নেই নাই । কারন চেন্নাই থেকে নিয়েছিলো কারন জার্মান কমপানি চেন্নাই তে নতুন খুলেছিলো তখন কাজে লিয়েছিলো আমাদের সবাই কে আর বলছিলো কে কি কাজ জানো বলো তখন যে যা করতো সেটা বলে ছিলো বেশি ফিটার হেলপারের কাজ করতো ইনজিনিয়ারিং এর হেলপের কাজ করতো ভাসা ছিলো ইংলিস আর জার্মানি আমরা ইংরাজিতেই বলতাম ভালুই সেট হয়ে গিয়ে ছিলো সব ইনজিনিয়ারের বেতন লখ্য লখ্য টাকার উপরে আমারদের তখন কার দিনে সব থেকে বেশি দিতো ঐ কমপানি ১৫০০০ টাকা তখন আমাদের অন্য কমপানিতে বেতন ছিলো ৬০০০ টাকা মাত্র । আমরা তখন পারমেন ছিলাম না বলেছিলো পারমেন করবে সিনিয়ার পাঁচ জন কে যারা ভালো কাজ করে বা ইংলিস বলতে পারে । পেপার ও দিয়েছিলাম জমা তখন কলকাতার মেসিনটা কমপিলিট কাজ এবার কলকাতাকে মেসিন ডেলিভিরি দিবে আর তখন প্রচনডো বৃষটি কলকাতাই বরষা কাল কলকাতা নিলো না মেসিন ডেলিভেরী তখন সবাই কে ছুটি দিয়ে দিলো আর মেসিন রাখার জাইগা নেই তাই নতুন মেসিনের কাজ শুরু করলো না বলল প্রথম মেসিন রেডি এটা ডেলিভারি হোক তার পরে চালু করবো নতুন কাজ। কথা ছিলোো এর পরে ব্যাংগালোরের মেসিন তার পরে দিল্লীর মেসিন আমরা জানতাম তিনটে মেসিন অডার আআছে কিনতু কপালে নে ছুটি দিলো ছয় মাস আমরা বাড়ি চলে এলাম
