Tom S. is a great Gamblers Anonymous Speaker, who promises to get to the recovery portion of his talk by the 15-minute mark, and provides an explanation of the 12-steps, with the other 15 minutes of his talk. At the time of this recording, it had been 5480 days since this speaker had compulsively placed a bet!
Thanks so much for listening to this speaker. We hope it helps you in your recovery! Please like our video, subscribe to the channel, and visit aaspeaker.com for more great speakers! Your comments help the newcomer find this video.
Comment “Recovery Works!” if you found this video helpful to you. Warning, we won’t ruin his talk, but the next several paragraphs describe detail about the talk and contain a few spoilers!!
In April of 1992 Tom had a rough three year run, he was starting to hit his bottom, and he was beginning to hate who he saw in the mirror. He would lie, cheat, and steal, just to gamble, shortly before god gave him the gift of desperation. Thoughts of suicide were very prevalent and real for Tom S., until he finally reached out to GA hotline.
For the first time he went to a meeting because he wanted help, not to get a judge or a spouse of his back. A true miracle happened when he read the 12-Steps and they finally made sense, Tom found he only had a choice whether or not to gamble, as long as he didn’t place the first bet.
He says the reason he has been successful ever since he walked into that meeting, is because he had already experienced the first three steps, before he walked through the doors. The First Step was easy, he had all kinds of examples that he was a compulsive gambler, and that his life had become unmanageable. He wanted a solution, thought GA had one, leading him to work the Second Step. The Third Step decision was made when decided to take the direction of the program, without debate, and when he decided not to argue with the literature.
He didn’t take well to the Fourth Step inventory, described in the GA literature, resulting in anger and frustration for Tom. He decided to attend a 4th step guided workshop, which was a major turning point in his recovery. He found that the 4th and 5th steps gave him all the information needed, to work the the remaining steps.

As a Gambling Counselor I would like to say never give up HOPE and attend a GA meeting, find a sponsor and look into treatment for help if you can't do it on your own. You can do it if you really want it.

I am a compulsive gambler. I am stateless & have been homeless several times. So, to me, 'extra cash' is anything above five bucks, unfortunately. I want to 'play' all the time; my problem is moment to moment, minute to minute. I look forward to the future.

I am a compulsive gambler and I am trying to recover it has caused me alot of pain and stress over the last 8 years I have not only lost money but peoples trust and respect I have decided to go to GA and will continue I dont want to be a statistic to this horrible disease what I hate most is the self-exclusion it really needs casinos and pubs and TAB to be more vigilant as well I will always remember from last night as well no havinng a small bet if your a compulsive gambler you cannot bet for ANYTHING...

My best friends brother gambled over 10 years of his life. He lost everything. His wife left him and his kids lost all respect for him. I got a call a couple of weeks ago. My friend told me his brother was found dead inside his car from a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head. He left behind a note. He said he wanted to end the pain of gambling addiction.

So why do they not do live streams of gamblers anonymous for people that want to have meetings virtually? Sounds like a much more feasible option for people that don't have meetings where they are every day

Yep, we all fucked are lives up let’s blame a game of chance and not take personal responsibility. Let’s blame an addiction instead of greed. Let’s blame family genes instead of poor choices. Let’s blame the casinos for not baby sitting us and telling us no. Let’s blame are families , employer and courts for ending are selfishness and criminal tendencies. We say we are powerless, bullshit! We are just evil people.
