I am 78 yrs old and I have been listening this song since the time the film was released.I saw this film in Delhi probably in Odeon on its first released and was deeply moved by the film and this song.This song was the crown of that Classic movie Dircted by Asit Sen.The picturization of this song was/is excellent with beautiful acting by Rajesh Khanna and Wahida Rehman.I too sing this song on karaoke track and enjoy singing and trying to bring pathos to its lyrics as done by Kishore Da.

The beauty of this song can't be described in a few words. Being a huge fan of Kishore Kumar ji, this song, like his other songs, hits my soul differently. Although I don't take any firm stand on this but considering that the film was released in 1969 when Rajesh Khanna was nowhere near what we see him as today in terms of popularity(was simply in the making), it is difficult to believe that he would have taken such a tough call and that Hemant ji would have agreed to some newcomer. Somebody please throw more light on this if possible.

It was Hemant Kumar who wanted to sing this song but inexplicably had a change of mind and have it to Kishore Kumar. This was 1969 and Kishore had already recorded few songs for Rajesh Khanna in Aradhana and Do Raaste.

What a voice. I think,I had never heard such a sweet, soft, pleasure, beautiful, simple voice. No huge modulation in voice, simply sung and totally controlled voice. This is Kisore Kumar who didn't hahave any proper training in classical music but had sung many songs based on classical music. As this song was made on "Kalyan " raag.

I think it'd be wrong to say different pitch for different actors as it is determined by many factors including the mood of song, which may affect the pitch for the same hero at different instances. However, your message is very clear that KishoreDa grabbed the very spirit of the song, it's situation so also the actor for whom he was singing that there is a natural sync between the actor on the screen and the one behind it. There is no denial that he was supreme in this rare quality.
