Why was it easier to make a woman fly in plays than a man?

It's not just Peter Pan, it's a tradition in a Theatre form called Pantomime where all the characters are over the top stereotypes, not only is the lead male played by a woman but there's usually an older female character (The Widow Twanky character to those of us who grew up in the UK, usually a washerwoman or similar) played by a man.

interesting that in the play Azula's lightning hits Aang from the front when she actually shot him in the back. The Fire Nation play writers doing some propaganda of "honorable fights" perhaps?
@thewriter87624 жыл бұрын
Its how the fire nation sees everything and how the stories are told. This is a great way to explain how where you live changes how a story is told. The Gaang to them is nothing more than a bunch of ragtag misfits that are trying to tear down their nation. History is nothing more than propaganda that changes form whenever there is a different person narrating it. Plus when you're in theatre, you take liberties with what you got and how something can seem "practical".

@johnwalker10583 жыл бұрын
That actually seems to explain a lot. Especially, we know that this is from the general perspective of the fire nation's view of the Gaang and their adventures throughout the series. I am totally open to the possibility that while the sources were people that the Gaang interacted with in some way throughout the series, the inputs from each of those people was interpreted through a fire nation perspective lens, and specifically that could have been the lens of Azula's perspective.
@thetwelfthdoctor9892 Жыл бұрын
the play is simply propaganda. Sokka is portrayed as an airhead douche because he is the "mind" of team avatar. Katara is the optimistic one, so they exagerated that trait and made her a drama queen. Aang is the "villain" and they wanted to portray him as a weak skinny girl, as a counterpart to the strong masculine firelord Ozai. Toph... for Toph I have to believe they simply couldn't accept that a blind kid beat the crap out of everybody, so they turned her into a big buff guy out of shame. For Zuko, they had problems: he is a traitor but he is still the firelord's first born, so they made a parody of him but still kept him on the safe side. Basically they made a parody out of everybody, so that the public would not side with them. Propaganda at its finest.

There's actually a deeper reason behind Zuko's scar being on the wrong side in this episode. Zuko's scar is on his left side because traditionally, facing right means moving forward (see every 2D platformer game ever). When Zuko is framed having a choice, you see him in profile. Facing right, AKA forward, he is whole. Facing left, AKA backward, he is scarred. Because his scar comes from his past, and his life is in the future. The scar being backward is a fun joke to have at Zuko's expense, maybe, but it's also a sly indicator that from the perspective of the Fire Nation, the choices Zuko makes while looking back at the past ARE the right choices.
@TheOfficialPolo4 жыл бұрын
Huh, never thought too deeply about that. I just thought it was creators poking fun at Zuko's scar being on the wrong side for a few frames on the Episode 13 Book 3. (The scar probably wasn't at the wrong side, the look at the characters was mirrored, but people still noticed inconsistency)

@@MayumiSaegusaShiba "Made avatar lore bad" If you're referring to the Avatar origin story, that was in the works back in Book 2 of A:TLA and was always canon. It's why a specific thing was always hinted at through A:TLA in blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.

About the effect of Sozin's Comet on Aang's battle with Ozai: From what is given in the show, I believe the comet doesn't merely add to one's firebending ability, but rather multiplies it. It was said in the show that the comet is like there being 100 suns. So I interpret that as meaning that any firebender is going to have their firebending strength multiplied by a factor of 100. Under regular circumstances, there is one sun, the sun, in the sky, so each firebender has whatever strength they have under one sun. Therefore, if the comet is "like having 100 suns" in the sky all at once, then the presence of Sozin's Comet is a x100 amplifier/magnifier for any firebender's firebending ability. Meanwhile, Aang just started learning firebending while Ozai has already been a master at it. And on top of that, Iroh (the legendary "Dragon of the West") being as much of a master as he is, even said he wasn't completely sure if he could even take Ozai in a fight (in the second part of the series finale when they were discussing plans for how they would divide up the team to stop Ozai and Azula). THAT is how good Ozai's firebending is. So, let's say Aang's firebending is at a 5, while Ozai is at a 50. With the comet multiplying their abilities by 100, Aang is now at 500, but Ozai is now at 5,000! Before, Ozai has a power difference of 45 above Aang, but with the comet in effect, Ozai's superior power difference now stretches to 4,500! Granted, Aang did learn from the Sun Warriors and their masters Ran and Shaw, while training with Zuko, the crown prince of the fire nation and son of Ozai. All this would give some edge back to Aang. Maybe we can consider Aang a beginner, but a really good beginner that is only a beginner in terms of time spent training, while in practical effect having the skill level of a good intermediate, or even a low-tier advanced student because of how much he has progressed within a relatively short time span. After all, Aang did learn the other elements pretty well, considering how much he progressed with them in the very, very limited time span in which he had to learn them in order to prepare to stop Ozai when Sozin's comet would come. Aang did essentially have to cram a lifetime's worth of element mastering within a single year, and yet throughout the entire series, Aang seemed to demonstrate great skill at being an exceptionally fast learner. So, maybe we can instead put Aang at 10, while Ozai is at 50. Even still, if we let Aang be at 10, while Ozai is at 50, with the effect of the comet in place multiplying their abilities by 100, Aang comes out at 1,000, while Ozai is at 5,000. In this instance, Ozai has an initial superior power difference of 40, but with the effect of the comet in place, it becomes 4,000! So, while each firebender gets the same magnification of their abilities under Sozin's Comet, they would still experience more or less magnification of their firebending depending on how much firebending strength they already initially had to begin with. - - - I think this also helps to explain why Ozai was basically giving Aang a smackdown during the first half of their battle in the finale. Among other factors, like the other elements being less useful in a battle of an Avatar against a supercharged firebender, in a setting where it comes down to who is the better firebender, Aang's primary saving grace was being the Avatar, and therefore having the power of the Avatar State at his disposal.

Re: Sozin's Comet: I think the point is that the Fire Nation has been on the verge of winning the war for some time. They're way ahead of the rest of the nations in terms of technology. Their armies appear better trained. That's without counting the fact that Ba Sing Se has fallen and the Northern Water Tribe would've lost without the Ocean Spirit. If Aang isn't ready, there's no one powerful enough to stop Ozai, esp. with the comet's power.
