He also had one of the scariest power-sets ever, considering the fact that not only could he both attack and defend simultaneously, but he could also turn the very ground you were standing on into another weapon. As long as you were on solid ground, you were in range of Gaara's attacks. And even if you could somehow hide in the air, that still wouldn't make you safe from Gaara. I mean, seriously, how do you even begin to fight someone who can literally turn the ground you are standing on against you? What good is your fighting skill if you can't even find a stable place to stand, or even to keep your balance? Being up against Gaara would be comparable to a single fish trying to fight someone who could control the entire ocean, or like an ant trying to fight a mountain. It would be a fool's errand, you would have lost before the fight had even begun!

Gaara's primary weakness at this stage was that most of his big moves ate up a lot of his chakra each time he used them, so he could burn himself out very quickly if he wasn't careful about overusing his chakra (a lesson that Gaara learned from this exact fight).

He basically learned from Lee to never underestimate an opponent and to always take them seriously. Gaara looked down on and underestimated Lee so much in their fight and it nearly resulted in Lee killing him. So Gaara realized that underestimating the capabilities of an opponent could get you killed. And here, against Kimimaro, Gaara learned the importance of actually conserving his strength as much as possible so that he doesn't exhaust himself too quickly if an opponent is proving particularly difficult to defeat, especially if he's fighting on his own. And Gaara learned how to trust, rely on, and love others from Naruto. Gaara basically learns from everyone he meets, whether they be an ally or an enemy, whether it's from a fight or a conversation, Gaara is always learning something new, and he's humble enough after his fight with Lee that he's perfectly willing to admit when he's made a mistake and what his faults are. It's really amazing just how much of a 180 Gaara's life took after his encounters with Lee & Naruto. The two of them literally saved his soul, intentionally or not. And Gaara returned that particular favor in spades throughout the rest of the story.

The most impactful/memorable moments of this battle when I first watched it on TV years ago was the fact that kimimaru transformation look so much alike in design with 1998 Godzilla(Zilla) I mean just look at his bones that sprouts from his back which look almost exactly the same with Zilla's dorsal fin/bones with the way it's positioned, even the tail look almost identical.

Sick foreshadowing Kimimaro being of the Kaguya clan, using bones... then Kaguya shows up way at the end and has that bone technique. Sick abilities and great design, his ability names are amazing. The fact that you think he was dead and he says "Mai..." from underground, that gave me chills. Kimimaro was the best character in that rescue arc.

It's mentioned that the Kaguya clan is descended from Kaguya Ootsutsuki (hence their surname). Of course they descended from Ashura's side, who possessed "Physical Abilities", which was passed to Senju, Uzumaki, and any other clan descending from him. Each "Ashura clan" developed some physical ability through generations, like the Uzumaki who developed high vitality. Kaguya clan developed the Bone Manipulation Jutsu, probably without ever knowing that this was an Ootsutsuki heritaged ability (since Black Zetsu made sure any true information about the Tailed Beasts, Hagoromo and Kaguya remained a secret). Badass Kimimaro.. this guy is on his death bed and went head to head with Naruto, Rock Lee and Gaara back to back.. his will power and his undying love for his Lord Orochimaru, imagine Kimimaro at full strength.... yes it cost The Sound Five their lives but it was a mission complete.. Honestly I think they were just trying to make him on par with Garra, the reason they listed no limits to his kekkei genkai is so that he can have this chance of making it seem like he could have killed Gaara if he wasn't sick, you're trying to tell me that this guy can dissipate himself into the bone. ride his ass up the bone marrow exactly where Gaara is to try and Pierce his face, after that big battle they had, where the hell is his chakra limits? he used everything he had. And that's another thing, how was the whole field covered in bones when he was in One singular spot? We at least had explanation on how Gaara got that much sand to be used for the tsunami. I would have accepted if they would have said Kimi's bones were littered across the battlefield because of the fights and they can expand at any proportion to his will. Dance of the Bracken is a chakra consuming ninjutsu (like Jiraiya's Nido Jizo), not a natural Taijutsu like all the rest besides Digit Bullets chakra consumption for propulsion. He knew it was checkmate at that point and used the last of his chakra to use that one attack and used his Keke Genkai's abilities to move through that ninjutsu's created bones and make another 'flower' lance, but he also didn't keep enough Chakra to preserve his body against its illness at the same time and died on the spot for it. I did some digging to find that answer out and it feels like less of a writing cop out when explained that way. I do agree that it's a bit too much to lend to that tho...

For Chakra Limits, as he's a member of the Kaguya Clan, and a rare, gifted one at that (having an ability directly derived from Kaguya Ootsutsuki's own Ashen Bones), it's easy to believe he has massive chakra reserves, and as he doesn't use many jutsus, opting for melee, he doesn't spend much either. It's unclear if his Bones and Skin naturally regenerate, or of they're actually based on his Chakra, but further expansion definitely requires chakra. Since he knew he was about to burn out, he probably put all of his remaining Chakra into Bracken Dance and that Flower, burning the rest of his life's energy to try and strike down Gaara, only to miscalculate, and die a moment too early, due to his compromised vitals.

Looking back after watching Naruto to the end, I think it would've been hype for the sand (mom) to be the thing that killed Kimimaro. Gaara is out of chakra, and in a desperate position; he's not able to react, let alone protect himself from the incoming danger, but out of nowhere, a lethal blast of sand pierces Kimimaro past his bones from the chest to the back of his neck and leaves a gaping hole on its place; Kimimaro didn't have any chance to avoid, much less survive such a ruthless attack that was many times faster than the usual sand's speed through the fight. Both Gaara and Lee were so shocked by the sudden events, they didn't notice the brief moment the sand took a humanoid shape while merging back with the normal sand of the environment.

Kimimaro had far better defense, utility, and variety than Gaara, which is why he would've won if he had a second more. Gaara's defense is better than his offense, but as seen, his basic defense was easy for CM Kimi to pierce. A point blank strike with that spear was death, as Shukaku's Shield takes time to form, and he didn't seem to be near the sand for it either. Because Kimimaro was effectively immune to Gaara's offense, it just became a battle of attrition which Gaara was rapidly losing due to Chakra usage, as for the most part, Kimimaro hadn't used many expensive jutsus like the Wide Scale jutsus Gaara tried to crush him with.

The ending was misunderstood. If you touch gaaras sand then he can sense you. Gaara couldnt sense kimimaru which tells us kimimaru is dead, however his will to protect the name of orochimaru made his body attack gaara. Just like when rock lee was unconscious but his body still had the will to fight gaara.

This version of Gaara is more scary than the latest at Boruto universe. I mean, this is a peak version of Gaara as a jinchuurki of Shukaku The One Tail tailed beast. I suspect that Rasa actually wasn't *that* strong, even for the Kazekage, if he was killed off so easily by just Orochimaru, Kabuto, & Kimimaro. Shippuden Gaara essentially curb-stomped Rasa, even when Rasa supposedly could counter Gaara's sand with his gold dust, Rasa still proved unable to even *scratch* Gaara's *Sand Armor*, let alone *Gaara* himself....and that was a Gaara *without* Shukaku to boot! Remember, Rasa would have become Kazekage solely because the Third Kazekage went "missing" (though we all know by now that Sasori had killed the Third Kazekage and turned him into his most prized puppet by then), so Rasa probably was given the position because he was the most "qualified" for it, but he likely still wasn't entirely "ready" for the position, and he was most likely still nowhere near the strength of his predecessor even by the time of his death at Orochimaru's hands. Rasa might have been strong enough to defeat *this* version of Gaara, but even the Gaara who fought with Deidara in early Shippuden would have probably surpassed him by then.

Let's be realistic here I like both gaara and kimimaro but knowing what we know now kimimaro would've str8 up killed these 2 1. he's a kaguya derived from freaky alien ppl 2. His absolute defense was just as formidable as gaara they just implemented their techniques diff 3. On top of that he has a power boost from orochimaru curse mark seal It's only because kishi has this problem with implementing op justu and techniques that he lost to gaara cuz ofc he was sick,...a man born with a terrific kekki genkei akin to moon ppl lost...cuz he was sick 😒

Gaara was really cool but compared to Kimimaru is was nothing. Being able to fight Naruto's clones, Lee and Gaara...and he didn't loose a fight after all. He died cause of illness 1 second before killing Gaara. I think he is the only one in Shipuuden who hadn't lost a fight in his life (and not only that..)
