Delos is my real reason for visiting Mykonos - several times in the last two. years. The first time I went alone like you. Not sure why they don't have more signs. The second time I hired a private guide, an archeologist who had lived in those houses you saw. Fascinating. There are many layers of history in Delos. Myth is that Apollo and his sister Artemis were born there. Because it was so sacred, no one was allowed to claim it as their space. People were born and died (and buried) on the nearby island of Rhenia.

Delos THE birthplace of/cradle of the banking system as we know it today (European Central Bank) Delos citizens believed that every compliant ancient Greek state/business, no matter what industry, jurisdiction or background, should have unrestricted access to secure, institutional-grade banking and asset facilities. Hi Gabriel, a lot of symbolism around this is an extremely important island the doors and columns are things you would see in a courthouse or capital building symbols of the U.S. democracy system Washington D.C. Jefferson and Lincoln Memorial. Even the anchor resembles the U.S. Navy pendent you see seaman wear. A small island with an incredible amount of history that is trying to piece together and introduce more of it and preserve it for future generations to experience.

Hi Gabriel. Because the twin gods Artemis and Apollo were born on this island, they named it Delos. Also the Cyclades were named so because they are around the holy island of Delos. Cyclades means circular.

If there is a morning and afternoon boat, I would recommend catching the morning boat and doing an organised tour, you don't have enough time to wander around in your own time the rest of the island if you come back on the morning boat, so stay on the island and come back on the afternoon boat. Tour guides use radios to communicate with the group, you hear what they say through a headset

When Hera learned that Leto was pregnant by Zeus, she became jealous and forbade her to give birth on land and in any place under the sun. When Leto was about to give birth, a small island suddenly appeared in the sea (Zeus put his hand), Delos (which means "Declared" = the island that suddenly appeared), where she managed to give birth first to Artemis and then to Apollo.

The History of Delos is inextricably linked to its Mythology, since it was considered the birthplace of Apollo, son of Zeus, and Artemis, and, therefore, a sacred place. Even its geographical position was defined in mythological terms, because before it became Delos (=known) there had been a rock called Ortygia that floated here and there, and so its position was Adelos (=Unknown). In Greek, the use of letter A at the beggining of an existing word, gives the oposite meaning of that word. Example: Theos (= God) -> Atheos (= Godless) It was Poseidon who anchored Delos in its special position, at the mathematical center of the Aegean and at the center of the Cyclades circle: Almost equidistant from mainland Greece to the northwest and the islands of Chios and Rhodes to the east, Crete to the south and the Peloponnese to the west. Its geographical position attracted the interest of the ancient Greeks, as did other places with the same geometrically important position according to their complex mathematical calculations, such as e.g. Delphi Probably places with particularly intense magnetic radiation, more noticeable in the then pristine magnetic environment of the earth and by the people of the time, who had developed other, inaccessible to us rational senses. Given the position of the island, the creation of these myths was only a matter of time. And just then Myth meets History, because the geographical position of Delos did indeed make it rich as Apollo's mother, Leto, had promised. What Leto had failed to foresee was the calamities and disasters and slavery and hundreds of victims that this very wealth would bring, to such an extent that Delos was deserted and the brightest island in the world was never inhabited again for two millennia!

26:20 It's a sign in four languages - top is Greek (ΣΠΗΛΑΙΟΝ ΚΥΝΘΟΥ), underneath French (GROTTE DU CYNTHE), then, I guess, English (CYNTHUS GROTTO) and the last I cannot make out. My guesses is that it would be either Italian or German but without being able to make out the writing it is quite impossible to say. I'd guess this is an old modern sign that is rather weathered but definitely not ancient. Based on the languages shown on the sign at 29:03 I'd have to revise the above and deduce that the fourth language would be German. That would also make sense given that the major archaeological schools/expeditions in Greece have been French, British/American and German.
