It wouldn’t be an instant deal breaker, but I would on my toes. I’m *sure* that plenty of (maybe even most) morticians are perfectly normal people, but I feel like the potential for them to be weird is so much higher. Would depend on just how healthy their relationship with death is, cuz i could easily see them being way too casual about it or something.

I didn't find it that weird either, there's probably a lot more gross stuff happening there...

saw the video title like “oh, this’ll be fun, and maybe i’ll get a little insight into what to avoid on a first date” i think i underestimated how wild these stories were gonna be 😭 I was scared of being awkward on a first date, but now i realize that as long as I don’t ask them to sh*t upon my chest, or to have s*x in a restaurant on top of my fettuccini, or go on an exotic vacation and drink their only pair of contact lenses, i’ll probably be fine

My cousins were greatly effected by it. 1 moved out early and ended up with me for a bit cause they couldn't handle it. I have ended up taking in a lot of cousins while they get on their feet. While their subling hoards too now.
@rhiannonsmith36295 ай бұрын
Humbly disagree. I grew up like this too and held a lot of shame for it. I actively avoided having people over and if someone got upset cause we always did stuff at their place, I'd give in, explaining that the house is.. "Well the house is a mess, but my mom is really sick all the time so the cleaning falls on me and it's really hard to keep up with it. So I hope you understand when we go inside." Like I get that every situation is different and how everyone deals w trauma is different but, at least w the way its explained, she had no shame with the way she invited him in - even going so far as to invite HIM to HER PLACE *FIRST*. I'd wager she is a contributor to the hoarding and is fine with it.

Regarding the first story-- there is actually a really great youtuber called 'Ask a Mortician' and she has these crazy elaborate, thought out, and well edited youtube videos about things she finds fascinating. Her videos actually are really great and helped me de-stigmatize the natural happenings of death.
@idontwantahandlethough Жыл бұрын
oh I've seen a couple of her vids, they're great! Definitely second that rec.
@GuitarSlayer136 Жыл бұрын
She makes great stuff! If there's 2 things I don't really understand, it's finding adorable rodents scary, and judging others for doing dirty jobs critical to society when you yourself aren't mentally strong enough to do them. Like do you think they ENJOY the dark and dirty parts of their job? No. It probably grosses them out as much as it does you. But they still do it without complaining and you should treat them like a fucking super hero for being able to do so.
@lifeissteph5843 Жыл бұрын
I took a class on death, and my professor brought her up! We read an article she wrote and it was really interesting. We also had a mortician come in to talk about her job and the stigma around it. Anyways, she said that when they take apprentices and stuff, they look out for any weird people who seem to have ulterior motives and kinda fire them or turn them away. And her perspective was to show that they do what they do to respect the families and the dead, so it’s more chill and nice than the stigma behind it

One time I told my date I was a bioarchaeologist (I work w/human skeletal remains) and he seemed super interested and was asking tons of questions. He asked what was the coolest thing I'd seen and I told him about a time I picked up a skull and like a hundred baby tarantulas came pouring out of it. The look on his face made it immediately clear that I picked the wrong memory to share and for some reason that made me start stammering about how tarantulas are actually cute and fuzzy and not scary at all and don't worry they're not even close to as bad as the neon green scorpions I find in tombs sometimes and... He literally had to cut me off and told me he hated bugs and asked to change the subject. I never heard from him again obviously.

My terrible first date was something I don't consider a date because it's the closest thing I've ever had to a date. I'm a gay guy and this happened when I was back in high school for context. He was working at a restaurant and gave me his number and we started texting and set up a time to meet each other for real a few days later. He wanted to meet at the mall and I got there late and when I got there him and his friends were getting kicked out. While we were leaving a homophobic bully at his school had seen him and was trying to beat him up for being gay which I could have gotten pulled into too, so we had to drive around town to lose him. We went to the restaurant to hang out for a while and dropped off some of his friends at home before him and one of his friends still went back to his house. Him and his friend decided they wanted to watch Peppa Pig and I didn't question it. His friend left after a while and he still wanted to watch Peppa Pig. After Peppa Pig was done he told me his mom was coming home and he needed to get homework done so I needed to leave. He told me he wanted to see me again and then ghosted me a few days later. Later on I made friends with another gay guy at work and was telling him about this guy and in the crazy small world that gay dating is, he told me that when I went out and met that guy, that guy was taking a break from homewrecking because my friend's now ex had been cheating on my friend with the guy I went out with and my friend's ex and the guy had stopped seeing each other for a while and he went to try and get with me and my friend told me that knowing the guy, he probably ghosted me because I didn't get nasty with him that night. Remember his friend was there and we were watching Peppa Pig. So I dodged a bullet lol

Mortician here. I usually don’t bring up stories about my experiences unless prompted by my partner and definitely not while eating lol. It’s also kind of a double-edged sword. When i was dating, i’d meet a lot of people who had opinions about my profession. Usually one of three options. The person who wants nothing to do with it, the person who’s a healthy amount of curious, and the person who’s way too into it. I’d always look for the middle option when i was dating.

Ofc, I was always “that” child that was obsessed with anything morbid. From my clothes, to music taste, to interests to the things I drew, I was a macabre kid. I mean even when I was 5, I would make my dad play Ghost, Black Sabbath, And Anthrax in the car, and I would watch Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, and Mummy I’m A Zombie 24/7. And of course now, I do fit the mortician stereotype, as I dress Goth (I do listen to the music btw, but I’ll always be a Black Metaller at heart) and still have the same morbid interests.

In high school, I wasn't loquacious, I basically was bullied by everyone and spent my free time on this extra floor that nobody knew existed. All that was there was an elevator the teachers used. I spent my time there listening to Bob Dylan and playing GBA. By age 19, I still hadn't had a first date, and my friend wanted to change that. My friend was the exact opposite of me, he looked like a combination of Jamie Oliver and Channing Tatum and was the most loquacious person on the planet. We'd go shopping and he'd just have to nod at a woman for her to run into the bathroom and make out with him. Every week he had a new girlfriend and had this air around him that made him a magnet. My friend knew this girl, she was 2 years younger than me and he connected us. She asked me to meet her at Men in Black 3 on opening night. I assumed she wanted to watch the movie, nope, she wanted to talk and have a heart-to-heart, in a packed movie theatre with full volume on. Anyway, the movie was too good for me to focus on our conversation and halfway through, she stormed out. She was going to flame me online for being inconsiderate but my friend convinced her to give me one more shot. So, we met up five weeks later and started again from scratch. Hey man, Men in Black 3's an entertaining film, don't @ me.

I also had a vacation first date. I got food poisoning on the first day. So you can imagine how the first few days were for me. At first she was really nice. Took me to a doctor and brought me medicine. The next day (3rd vacation day) I felt confident enough to go down to the beach. So she told me let’s go partying tonight. I told her I don’t feel well enough for that I mean I was still vomiting from time to time… but she didn’t let offside kept asking me till we were already back in the hotel (it was evening by now). I kept denying her and she absolutely lost her shit! She went completely silent, went over to the next room and the only sound i heard from her was silent crying or giggling. I couldn’t make it out exactly what it was. So I called for her "Anon, are you ok?" No answer, so I called out again for her. Still no answer, just silent notices coming from the next room. So I got up and went over, she was standing there in a corner with her face toward the wall. Like the guy from Blair Witch. I called out again for her. No answer. So I slowly went closer to her wile calling out to her. Finally I tapped her shoulder. She immediately turned around and screamed at me. No words just a scream like: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! I jumped back a step and was prepared to punch her. The she screamed I want to go out! I want to go partying! This is all your fault! The story continues for a while after that. If someone is interested ^^

I went to group therapy as a teenager and one of the girls there said her dream job was to be a mortician. She said she wanted to be the person who dresses and put make up on the dead bodies.

It takes the right type of person to want to be the last person to see someone or get them prepared ( and sometimes fixed up) to say goodbye to their loved ones. It’s not an easy occupation by any means so I hope she saw it through and actually enjoyed it.

my first date *_ever_* was with this girl i met at the library at college. she was cool and we got along alright but for some reason she thought to take me to the schools mental health art exhibit. to be clear, our school had a student art show themed around mental health. it was, like, in a classroom not really in a central area of the school, i didn't even know it was happening until she took me. then we got dinner in the dining hall afterwards. we talked for probably another week then kinda just stopped. idk it was something.

The apprenticeship thing is probably a german story. In Germany we've got apprenticeships, which are basically 2/3rds work and 1/3rd special school education required for the job. And the apprenticeship thing is the closest you can get by word for translating the german word for it, even though the meaning is completely different.
@JesusOfPaign Жыл бұрын
I think apprenticeships aren’t *too* unusual in the US, but maybe just in professions that don’t otherwise have trade school programs or 4 year degrees or something. I know very little about them, but I know tattoo artists have to do apprenticeships, and surely other professions would too.
@NOPE96 Жыл бұрын
@@JesusOfPaign In Germany most professions have some sort of apprenticeship. Some being better paid than others, but in all cases you've got a degree of some sort provided you're finishing it and also nail the exams in the middle and at the end.
@apmanda Жыл бұрын
People studying and/or working to be certified as morticians in the US are often called apprentices, unless they are not currently working at a Funeral Home/Mortuary/Morgue because they typically “apprentice” under an established mortician. So it’s entirely possible it was in the US, but it also could have been somewhere else. Anyway, apprenticeships are still common, just not as common as they used to be. Just depends on what you’re going into and how you go about getting into it. We really only call it apprenticeships in the US if it isn’t school-sponsored (internships) and you’re working under someone. For example, lots of people apprentice as mechanics so they don’t need to go to school.
@randomwerewolf1099 Жыл бұрын
We have apprenticeships in the UK as well
@NOPE96 Жыл бұрын
@@apmanda I agree, also for the comment about uk, but the main difference I was talking about here is the kind of work and school at once balance. It's also called a dual system or duales ausbildungssystem, whereas the apprenticeship known in the US and UK are more known as a Praktikum here.

My worst first date was contracting mono from a girl named Vicky, later dubbing her Icky Vicky. I felt like I was dying, had sores in my mouth (imagine strep but around your gums, under your tongue), fever, fatigue. After my second doctor visit they gave me Tylenol 3 and lidocaine for local numbing. So drugged up, numbed up, I watched Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail and was finally okay for once in three days. Starting a ritual of every time I get sick I watch it.
