dont forget artists (who can pump out content). some creators make videos of their process or art memes, and if they have the capability to make a lot of those, they get lots of views. i've seen some end up posting more reels than static images on their page bc, ya kno, they want/need the reach (especially if they take commissions). it's kind of crazy to think about it since instagram was originally a /photo/ sharing website-- and photo only, at the start.

@jessicalewis5406 Жыл бұрын
The main gripes I've seen about Threads are that even if you try to create a second account to be anonymous, it will connect it to your Instagram regardless, going as far as to use your internet connection information to do so; there's no friends only feed (who cares); the posts are all annoying corporations trying to be cool; and it steals and sells way more of your data than is acceptable in most other countries. I think it will survive because it has easy onboarding and everybody's already there, but I don’t think it's good and in fact I think it's dangerous.

If that’s something you are concerned about, you might want to give mastodon a shot, there is a large choice of apps and they all ask for absolutely 0 permissions. You should consider everything you post public, though, even if you make things less visible by posting to followers or specific people, since it goes to many servers anyway, managed by many different people, and any of these might be compromised, but that’s just like, the content of what you post, nothing else.

Literally every social media app in the US does this. Your data has never been safe lol.
@RedPandaSquadron Жыл бұрын
As I've said before in this thread, half true. Threads collects the same data really as Instagram and Facebook. New apps don't release in every region all at once, and the EU has regulations for putting apps onto the stores, so it's often a later addition. Yes, it collects a ton, but no more than other social media apps. Yes, it's bad because of that, but it's not like it's some new invasion of privacy. Literally the reason people keep saying this is because one twitter user said it without a source. And then people read the terms and conditions for Threads, without reading the terms and conditions of Instagram and Facebook. They're essentially the same. Basically, yes Threads is bad for it's data collection, but we need to be rational and not hyperbolic in this. Meta is monstrous, but this particular app isn't like an outlier, Meta has been collecting this information from all sorts of different avenues for years.

Do faculty adopt those apps too, or just student populations? What subjects/uses are most often associated with which apps? So many great questions grow out of your observation! 2011 and still the same blog lol. Tumblr has its own major issues, most of which come from the staff not understanding their majority userbase or being willing to let Tumblr continue to be its own thing. The Tumblr merch store and all would be a fantastic way to keep them afloat without selling data if they didn't keep pissing off users by bringing in broken updates that no one wants, I know a lot of users want to buy the merch and support server costs but are being screwed over by staff so they're boycotting. I think we’re maybe in an era where social media apps aren’t going to die off completely like MySpace but the audiences are going to get more “niche,” it’ll be less everyone on the popular bandwagon and more, what app do I personally like and why? I don’t think a new social media will ever manage to completely dominate again, even when they’re designed to be a direct competitor to another app, they all seem to keep a core dedicated audience even if they’re not really using it for its intended purpose. Maybe some will eventually fizzle out, and who knows maybe Twitter will implode in the next year but they just keep messing up in seemingly catastrophic ways and still coming out the other side. I’m definitely not talking for like decades and centuries to come, we’re going to change too much, but I think at least for the next several years this will be the case. Everyone is looking to the big fireworks finale but really it’s going to be more like a little sparkler fizzling out for a lot of these.

There was no rate limit. The change Musk wanted to prevent people from viewing tweets without logging in caused an unintentional DDOS attack that crashed the site and calling it "rate limiting" was just damage control. It's why you would scroll and view a handful of tweets before being "rate limited." If this was real, you would get a popup like any other site saying "Hey, you reached your limit. Please consider paying to view more." They still haven't added an option to tell you to view in to view tweets without being logged in but you can actually view the individual tweet without logging in. He wanted a massive change to how the site worked but fired most of his engineers so they had to scramble to immediately implement a change that would take weeks of testing to implement for any other site. Sometimes, I imagine myself in the PlayStation Home shopping mall when reading Threads. Something else notable on there is American Eagle outfitters, they are running their threads account like 2014 when corporate Twitter first became a thing. Their page isn't advertising the company, they're just these languid pessimistic salty threads in a first-person perspective about how bad their day was or how awful their competitors are.

Update from 5 months in the future, I just left Threads lmao. Basically the app is STILL completely bare-bones and still nearly useless in some functions; it’s impossible to get any engagement because you’re only allowed one tag per post and the posts that get the most traction are either pre-established brands or copypastas. The security of the app is also completely screwed because bigots and bait accounts started flooding in and nothing’s being done about it, not to mention how if you go into someone’s account to block them, it STILL counts as engagement and Threads will keep on recommending similar content. The functionality and algorithm are both completely broken and I’m fully convinced that the app was released UNFINISHED.
