Good Morning Alex, I opened my IPad today and the first thing that popped up was you. I thought, “What the hell, I should get my day off right with a cup of coffee, a dose of Alex & Gabriel. Now I have a smile on face. I have a question about Portuguese: What or how does the letter “R” sound? When Gabriel introduced himself, He said “I am Gabriel Henrique from Brasil”. When pronouncing his first name and Brasil, the letter “R” sounded typical to the English “R”, which is hard & distinctive. Then he pronounced his last name, and all that went out the window. Why? and is there some rule that governs the sound?

The letter R is pronounced like an H. Rio is hio. Rua is hua. It makes language learning fun!! ✌️

Hahaha! Felt good on knowing it! Our way of saying "r" is simmilar to the french BUT in some occasions, in the middle of the words (just like the example you gave) is more less similar to the british but with a little more strenght... If it's between two vowels, the sound is weaker and it needs two rr to have more strenght! simple "r" represents the sound [R] at the beginning of a word, after a nasal vowel (eg Henrique, ), or at the beginning of a syllable after a consonant.
