I grew up on Army bases in the early 60s. The Army was the great equalizer. I never thought of race. Schools were integrated. I stayed at black friends houses, they stayed at mine. It wasn't until like 1962 I realized something wasn't right. I was about 6 years old. We had been in the Philippines for 3 years. Well, my dad was from Tupelo, Mississippi and we went for a visit. Right at the start of the Civil Rights movement. Jim Crow, separate water fountains all of it. I enlisted in the Army at 18. I was coming out of the mess hall with a guy I had been dating from west Tennessee. There was this really nice black NCO I worked with, he was one of the smartest NCOs we had. I said lunch isn't bad Jim (we were in Germany), they even have watermelon (something you would rarely see there). He was PISSED off! The guy I was with grabs my arm and drags me down the street and I was like what is he so pissed off about? Uh, you just told a black man there was watermelon. I said "So?" He had to explain to me it was considered racist stereotype etc. I have never felt so bad in my life. The CSM of the Battalion was a friend of my father's and I went it and said we need to talk. Told him what had happened and I told him I need this guy, he's one of the best NCOs around. He called him in and we all sat and talked. I said I had no idea, I really didn't. Alls well that ends well. But, damn I've never felt so bad in my life.
