Gabriel's is from the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. His story is one of perseverance and survival in the rough and tumble of live in Port Moresby. It inspired me and I hope it does so to other people in Papua New Guineans and the World.
In his own word, he is uneducated and was brought up by a poor family.
He dropped out from the formal educational system at grade 4.
He migrated to Port Moresby from Lae in 1996 to try and make a life for himself in the city. He started off collecting used bottle for recycling but soon after was fortunate to find a job as a security guard which he held from 1996 to 2003.
From his savings he managed to pay K890 for driving lessons and got his class 1 driver's license.
A brother of his, recognising his ambition and strength to endure hardship and preserver, bought him a car which after driving around the city and gaining confidence he now uses as a taxi in Port Moresby.
For someone who dropped out at grade 4 his English is very good and he say he attributes this to reading News Papers and he says that the English language is important to be able to communicate with his clients.
In 2012 he bought his own vehicle and his making enough money now to look after his three children, putting them through school which he hopes will give them greater opportunities than what he had.
He avoids driving at night times as he says like any taxi driver would say anywhere in the world that is much riskier with more drunkards to deal with.
