I've met some great Chinese and Japanese international students since my time at university (I live in the UK) but i feel sometimes a few of them seem to be really scared of British people haha, idk, I guess I know as a nation we are far more assertive and confrontational than a lot of the asian cultures and I think they find this really hard to deal with some of them. Very interesting video! Keep it up!
@SukiCheung5 жыл бұрын
Ahhh maybe because English isn’t their first language therefore they might be shy! But you’re right! I feel like British people are definitely more confident and assertive you can say. 😂 but overall I do love the UK 🌈✨

I have noticed as a language major myself and a brit, the chinese students (mainland not hk) definitely move in flocks together like sheep and branch out and mix with native brits far less than exchange students from other nations such as india, japan, singapore, african nations, europeans etc. I think perhaps the culture is vastly different and china is more closed off in political narrative to the west also which plays a part in that comfort of sheltering with your countrymen and sticking to your own language outside of class. I will study abroad next year and my perspective even as an introvert is try as much as possible and hang out with some locals etc because im only there a year u know. I would feel sad if all I did on a year abroad was hang out with british people.Having said that, university for chinese people is much more about the grades and education than social life so thats probably a key reason they seem that way.

Most UK people do not use dish washers and they do hang their washing out in the garden.
@zarasbubble17482 жыл бұрын
I have to say that dishwashers are becoming almost an essential item, but is not as widely used yet. Cloth dryers are actually on the rare side and are definitely a middle-upper class thing. They make sense because of our whether and for people who live in flats (apartments). But honestly this might have been your experience and maybe the type of socio-economic class of the people you have met, but these items are actually not that common as much as you may think. Both a VERY American thing..
@neilboulton98133 жыл бұрын
It is the opposite British people use outside drying or inside rather than tumble dryers, which is more environmentally friendly. It is interesting as Americans do the culture shock in reverse they are surprised so few people use dryers. They are also comment on Jaywalking, which as commented elsewhere is not illegal the pedestrian has the right of way. As if you think about they predate vehicle traffic.

It's safer to cross on a crossing, but there's no law against crossing anywhere else. Our sockets gave switches because we use a higher voltage than the rest of the world (250 volts), so switch off with the switch before you pull the plug OR... You'll blow every fuse in the house You'll get a lethal shock. That's also why we have string-pull light switches in bathrooms.

Hi. Hope you have some interesting experiences of life in the UK and get to see some of the countryside. Noticed your comments on the clothes drying, we try to dry our washing outdoors but often the weather is against you! Also, we used to wash the dishes after meals etc but found that we were using the same amount of hot water as a dishwasher or maybe more; so, we bought a dishwasher and waste less water now. About those electrical plugs - you can change the fuse in each plug so that the fuse matches the power and wiring of the appliance. A light (low power, with thin wire) would have a 3 amp fuse, a vacuum cleaner (high power, with thicker wiring) would have a 13 amp fuse. So an overloaded appliance will quickly blow the fuse and protect the rest of the electrical circuits in the house. Have a great time at uni - we can all learn from each other and make a better world!
@TheEulerID5 жыл бұрын
Hong Kong uses the same plug as the UK (due to its colonial past). It just appears they don't have switches on the sockets. It's not even part of UK regulations that there has to be a switch on a socket; you can buy them without if you wish.

In the UK there is no such thing as Jay Walking. You can cross the road wherever and whenever you want. In certain sites there are pedestrian operated lights to control traffic to allow you to cross the road. But you are not compelled to stop the traffic at these, if you see a gap in the traffic you can cross anyway without operating the lights.
@philipmason95375 жыл бұрын
Jaywalking doesn’t exist in the UK, it’s not a rule so you CAN walk across the road at any point, any time. I have to disagree with you about dishwasher machines, only one in five households own one so I’m not sure who you’ve been visiting!! Regarding the weather the North West of England which includes Manchester and Liverpool do get many wet, cloudy days but London and the South East have the best weather in the UK. Your last comment on driving on the left side of the road is where I must make a point; 60 countries and 15 islands drive on the left, ONE THIRD of the world !! These have a total population of 2.5 BILLION so not as rare as you thought !

You can say anything you like about Britain, I wouldn’t try that in Hong Kong. Jaywalking is an Americanism, as soon as a pedestrian walks into a road here he/she has right of way, even if it’s not a crossing the traffic must give way. It is not always raining and gloomy, this video is peppered with rubbish.
@SukiCheung4 жыл бұрын
Hi Derek, I am sorry you didn’t like my video . I must admit that I filmed this video without doing any research and it was all solely based on my observations and personal opinions! Nothing I said is supposed to be inherently correct, since I am not a pundit in either cultures. I’m just an ordinary girl that have lived in both hk and the Uk and was excited to share my personal thoughts on their difference that I have observed.
@mike045354 жыл бұрын
Lie number two. It is not always rainy, and gloomy in the UK. We do have a lot of sunny days. If you don't believe me go and check out the Meteorological Office website. We have a moderate maritime climate with very rare extreme weather events. Just in case you think that I am wrong I am 85 years old and have lived here all my life, unlike you who has been here merely one year. which hardly qualifies you to give an expert opinion on it.
@mike045354 жыл бұрын
Lie number one. May I remind you that their is nothing weird about the British. We have our way of doing things and citizens of other countries have theirs. Why anyone visiting the UK should experience culture shock is beyond me. Before you get on board the plane just tell yourself I'm going to a foreign country and things will be very different from my own country. Leave it at that and stop making a drama out of it. As I write this I have not reached the possibly mentioned driving on the left. This is not a uniquely British thing; there are plenty of other countries who drive on the left too.
@SukiCheung4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks for the comment. I understand your frustration however I want to emphasise that my video was solely just personal opinions. I did not intend to criticise the uk in any form. I’ve been studying for Sheffield for nearly three years and honestly it’s been one of the best time of my life. I’ve made the best memories here and also met my British boyfriend here. I love the culture, the food, the people in the UK. I just thought it’ll be a fun idea to share the differences between countries. I didn’t do any research before filming this video, it was all my personal observations therefore please take everything I say with a pitch of salt.
