Sensei Varga single-handedly elevating me to a whole nother level. I don't know where I'd be without this man. Left Hook is my worst punch and this couldn't have been released at a better time.

Yeah he has helped me so much too. My left hook is definitely my best punch, and my best strike in general, but I still like to improve it even more, and have more ways to land it, so I can KO, hurt, or even just land on people with more ease.

funny that the left hook and right knee are the only techniques that I can generate a lot of power with, and I don't even know why... I'm not a strong guy for my size by any means, and I'm also a begginer, but when hitting pads with my friend (who is much stronger and experienced than me) the only times that he says "damn" is when I place a really good knee to the mid section, or when I explode into a left hook, maybe it's because i feel more comfortable doing it (?), maybe this is what makes difference.

Everyone has certain techniques that work better for them. You should work to make all of you strikes good, but some will be better for you. My left hook, right uppercut, and left elbow are my favorite and best strikes.
@undeadpresident
@undeadpresident 2 жыл бұрын
If you do focused practice on the strikes you're not as strong with you'll become more comfortable and efficient with them and even if your raw power still isn't there you'll land them more often and cleaner and still damage them. Usually just landing a well timed and executed blow does better than just having power.

This is excellence at its finest! I was missing such a thoughtful breakdown of a lead hook, amazing 🙏🏻 my only question and I’m not one of these ‘I’d back flying knee you if you try that on me’ I legitimately wonder, what’s your take for that first body hook when you dip in the head inside and the opponent is countering with his right hook? It seems like the back of the head would be very vulnerable and it’s not as easy not to make it obvious you’re throwing a body hook. Again, thank you for this amazing content I will take notes 📝

I am a beginner kick boxer (been training for about a year), my left lead hooks feel terribly weak still. Any tips on strength training or other ways to improve it? Also we were shown at our gym to do right knee followed by a left lead hook. Doing it felt terribly uncomfortable and my body reflexively wanted to instead throw a right cross by pushing with the right leg as it comes back down from doing the knee. Any opinion on if that's something that would work? Love your channel, Cheers.

I’m obviously not Gabriel, and understand that this is totally unsolicited: but in my experience, when people are having trouble getting power from the lead hook it’s *usually feet related. Remember that all the leverage you can possibly generate comes from the ground. So make sure you load your hips and pivot your lead leg, knee, and hip (and don’t lock your knee). Most importantly keep that back foot planted and in the right place. Don’t let it come up like you’re about to take off running. It lets the power go right out the back door. Again, just a hunch. Cheers.

We do the same thing at our gym. I've also only been training for a year and my left hook still feels weak too. As for the right knee into a cross: yes. It absolutely works. It's like reflexive for me too and I land it frequently after a right round kick because I'm "sprinting" into the punch. More or less the same as a knee into a cross.

To me it looks as if you landed the kick on the far of ribcage around kidneys but he kind of seems to have stumbled there, misstep maybe off balanced by the second body hook, I can see where you’re coming from.
@undeadpresident

I like that move where you pull them into the right knee then follow up with a quick left hook. Abusive. Something else that can be done with a lead left hook, is instead of rolling under and out to the left, is wheeling the right leg around when you throw it so you rotate clockwise out to the left. If they still remain close enough you can pop a right hand or jab out at them as soon as your right foot touches the ground again. When practicing this you want to pivot your left foot before it touches the ground or you'll start twisting your knee. This can be done after throwing a right hand as well instead of rolling under out to the right. So you throw the right, then as you pull back your right shoulder to reset, you push off the right foot to wheel the right leg back around to your left and reset at a different angle. So it's a two-part movement when doing it with the right hand, you throw it, then as you turn your right shoulder back to reset, you push off your right foot and wheel it back for a clockwise rotation to change angle. Most boxers do this instinctively since two orthodox boxers tend to circle eachother clockwise anyway, but if you practice being able to replant the right foot quickly and precisely, opportunities arise to strike at them again before the opponent has reset. Moving this way tends to keep the fight more on the outside.

I can't seem to connect my lower body(hip) rotation to my torso and shoulder for the hook punch,it's slow and weird,any tips? It's weird how in the vid how to throw a strong hook by Liam Harrison,there isn't any hip rotation yet his lead hook sounds like a round house kick to the heavy bag,in contrast Marvin Cook has an interesting way to land the short hook where a quick circular hip rotation is key while in a bladed stance(he calls it the true boxer's stance) The hook is just so confusing,what r ur thoughts for a beginner like me?

I've seen people with this problem before. I know the solution. Try the following: Stand with legs shoulder width apart and legs slightly bent, then rotate your torso 180 degrees at a time by pivoting both feet at once and letting your arms relax and swing loosely. Start slowly. The rear foot after each pivot should continue pivoting for a little longer than the front foot, which should plant at a slightly in-turned angle. The rear foot should be pointing directly at the heel of the front foot at the end of each pivot. As you pivot a little fast, you'll feel the tension in your front leg as it bends to stop the previous pivot and begin the next one. Focus on this and keep your torso straight and in one piece as it rotates. As you increase the speed at which you do this, you should find your arms starting to raise up and move, kind of like the little cords on the drum in the Karate Kid movie. Once you achieve this, start using your arm muscles a bit and feel where you must "catch" the power to cause the greatest degree of acceleration. This should be just after the push off the ground from your leg. The arm muscles primarily used should be the biceps in this exercise, to generate more lateral velocity. By letting them extend and then pulling them in the velocity is increased. Once you have achieved this point, begin closing your fists at the moment of greatest acceleration in your arm. This is the point when you should make impact when hitting a target. After this has become natural, then focus on the other aspects of proper form.
