This was used on a very large deck of a house I bought. I had to cut out a section of deck for termite repairs (unrelated to Gaco coating) and found the coating was very durable and holding up well. Even where I cut the surface the surrounding edge was tight - and thick. I'm using the primer on the plywood that I'm replacing just because I always use primers on bare wood. I found the application isn't difficult at all. It is expensive, but for a coating that holds up well to foot traffic and is impervious to weather it's worth it. Also, the biggest plus is that if you call their service number a real live person answers the phone! No "Press 1 for another language" or " you're being recorded to improve service" etc., just a human being answering the phone on the 3rd ring and answering any questions you have. I'd use their product just for that reason alone!

How is this different from hydroban from lacticrete😊

Another thing. 1/4'' per foot fall is required that should be mentioned up front. Type of plywood, well how about 200 per sheet marine grade plywood? Also if it's over an open structure as in a porch roof, could moisture come from underneath?

I have some gaco two part primer from another job, is this the primer you'd use? For Gaco to just say use any primer is a bad thing to say! For instance a roofer could use some asphalt primer that we use on a torchdown roofs flashing! Do I use a oil base paint primer? How about kiltz primer?

If I don’t want to apply the texture sand, do I just apply two coats of GacoDeck total?

what about for people that have severe nut allergies?
@WorldofStains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Brian. You can also call World of Stains at 866-645-5544 for assistance. Once the product is applied, the walnut shells are embedded in the coating, and we are not experts in allergens but would expect there to be no concern at that point. If the person applying has a severe nut allergy, one option would be to use the coating only rather than the kit. The GacoDeck will work great without the GacoGrip texture granules, but of course would not offer slip resistance so you'd need to consider slip and fall potential. Another option would be to use a silica sand non skid grit material, rather than walnut shells. We would suggest contacting Gaco directly to see if they have any additional suggestions for you.

Did you use this stuff? I am curious if it is durable. Thanks

It's a great product only if you follow the instructions exactly and in perfect weather conditions. Every person I saw that had an issue with this product did something wrong it seemed. I just did a porch and it came out beautiful. New clean 3/4 t&g plywood, I didn't wait until the plywood got dirty, new plywood doesn't need primer but if the deck has been previously painted or stained then it does need primer. I used only the gaco fill for the nail holes and seams. Then used a coat of gacodeck with the provided mesh fabric with a second coat over the mesh. Let everything dry the time the instructions said. I applied 4 coats of gacodeck, 2 regular thick coats with a 3/4 nap roller then 2 more with the crushed shells for non slip texture. 4 coats total and I waited 3-4 hours between each coat. Mistakes I see most is people don't use primer when it is needed, they use a 3/8 nap roller and put it on too thin and/or not enough total coats, they wait too long in between phases so the wood get dirty and they don't clean it or they don't let things dry completed before they add a coat. You have to keep a eye on the weather for rain and also the humidity, if it's good humid it takes long to dry and will cause a issue of you coat too soon. If it's too cold or gets very cold where you live you should use the primer first even if you think you don't need it. It's also says this product is not intended for dimensional lumber and I see videos on KZbin of people complaining about it not working right on their deck when you shouldn't use it on 1x6 plank boards anyway, especially when its pressure treated lumber and not fully dried out.

Thanks for the detailed response, Steve! So, untreated plywood is recommended?
@infrared17318 жыл бұрын
Correct untreated plywood and concrete. They had a product called gacoshield that was designed for treated wood, cedar, redwood and composite but it has been discontinued. I believe there are other products out for these materials but not gacodeck

Ridiculous. You apply latex caulk and elastomeric directly to unprimed plywood where standing water will be present. Your coating will be peeling off in sheets.

We have received a lot of positive comments on the GacoDeck products from our customers, many of whom are DIY homeowners with no professional painting experience. We haven't really had anyone who has used the product complain about these things, as long as they watched the video and knew what to expect. Did you use the GacoDeck and find that it was difficult? Did your deck install take a long time to cure? Thanks for your feedback.
