Astro A50 X Headset Review - The Longest Review I've Done - is this the GOAT?

SO sorry this video is so long. I've been sick for almost the entire month of December and this was tough for me to get through. I wanted to cover all your questions as best as possible. Great video, thanks for taking the time. I wanted to say that even though it gives you less "blacking out" (ie HDMI dynamic range/refresh rate output rate switching) when you set HDR to "Always On" with the PS5 it will greatly lower the quality of the SDR output of almost all games. This is because it puts SDR into an HDR container which causes black level raise, loss of colour saturation and highlights to be blown out/too bright, how they do it could be done better but even if it was done optimally its still not going to be as good as just outputting SDR normally. When TVs switch into their HDR picture modes the backlight is set to maximum and so this will naturally cause the black level to be raised unncessarily when its an SDR signal in an HDR container vs. a calibrated SDR backlight level, which would usually be much lower than maximum, for example my TV is very bright so the calibrated backlight value for SDR is 20-23 (out of 50) - 20 for the Game picture preset and 23 for the Cinema Pro preset - and pushing that up to 50 for an SDR signal in an SDR picture mode would raise the black level and reduce overall contrast, let alone in an HDR picture mode. Colours will also be desaturated at max backlight because the colour is being diluted, especially on OLED as that uses a 4th white subpixel with the three RGB subpixels to increase brightness. The black level raise is less of a problem on OLED, since that has per-pixel dimming but most games don't have a black level of 0 to begin with so it will still matter on OLED and the highlights will be negatively affected as with LCD TVs. Sorry thats so verbose but I wanted to explain it clearly to you. TL;DR: Set HDR to "On When Supported" and put up with the black screens because SDR outputs will be very negatively affected by setting it to "Always On".

The Maxwell is hands down going to be clearer audio but some have said that the accuracy of pinpoint sounds like footsteps aren’t as good on the Maxwell as they are on the Astros. It was such a nice surprise when I opened my new A50's and just snapped my older leather mod kit to the ear cups so I didn't need to buy a new mod kit. Glad I watched this as I was pulling the headband apart to try and put the leather mod kit on top too! Great vid!

I'm not really an audiophile but I am a pretty big geek and I love headphones so I really enjoy your content. It's a shame you're not a bigger channel, I feel like you give the most accurate, unbiased and comprehensive reviews on youtube. As for this video - I'm only about half way through it, and I have to say considering you suggest this pair could be the GOAT, they seem to have an awful lot of caveats and 'features'. I just want to say that I primarily bought the Maxwells (vs other competitors that I was evaluating) due to your in depth analysis and thoughts on it, since I tend to be really critical of what I buy. To this day, I still appreciate that decision. The Maxwells have had many drawbacks, but sound quality wise I couldn't have been happier. I have been daily driving them, using them every day at work for months now. So thanks for doing these in depth reviews. It feels like it's going to be quite a long time before anyone decides to even try to compete with the Maxwell on a pure sound quality basis, this being no exception. The fact that the asking prices keep going up, but the Maxwell seems to be still difficult to catch, kind of underlines that. I hope that we get an upgraded Maxwell with more connectivity features down the line, though, and maybe a slightly less heavy footprint because they can be kind of fatiguing to wear all day. Anyway you're doing good work, thanks.

@RoasAych-w6k I like then so far. The sound quality is good. Still playing with the different EQs. The mic is absolutely amazing. If you want a really loud set with heavy bass for music, these are probably not for you. I thought they would hit a little harder for the price, but they're only 40mm graphene drivers so it makes sense. I use mine for gaming, chat and music. Connectivity is extremely fast, game/chat mix for PC works flawlessly. The ear cushions get warm. My Official Xbox headset didn't bother me in that way so I'm probably going to buy the Wicked Cushions and redo my EQ. This should also pump the bass up for music too since they'll trap more sounds and block more outside noise.

@RoasAych-w6k Yes I play a decent amount of FPS games. Footstep tracking has been great. It's throwing me off a little because I'm not used to being able to hear it this clearly but I'm getting used to it. Battery life I'm not really sure because every time I set them down I just put them on the stand and they start charging. They advertise 24 hours per charge which is nothing crazy compared to other top brands but I can't see a scenario where the battery could ever die since they are always charging when not in use.

I went and got the wicked cushions and then downloaded the gadgetrytrch wicked freeze eq and I'm very happy with the results. This guy knows his EQS. I'm impressed. I already had my A50x tuned in pretty balanced but now I hear even more depth and detail between the new eq w the pads imo

The amount of effort you put into these is insane, thanks so much. It’s really odd to me that no one has released an open back headset that’s close to the a50s. The a50s aren’t quite open back but they’re the closest thing you can get It’s hard to find: good sound quality + good quality mic + good comfort + wireless AND open back. I think all of the high end headsets are all closed back and many have noise cancelling which because of ear health issues i don’t prefer Things I really like with new a50s: fixed headband, newer drivers, better mic, usb C Things that make me scratch my head: why not make console versions? why make the ear cushion tighter? Why is it almost 400$?

I had Astro A50 gen 3 and 4, had some connection and battery issues with both. Then I changed to Nova Pro Wireless, but I really didn't like the sound of it and sold after 6 months. Now I have a Logitech G Pro X 2 and I love it! I think it sound great, the best I had, and really don't care about the missing features. I really think the G Pro is underrated for it's price/quality.

I have hd599 epos h6pro and jt1 fiios I never ever touch my like new astro a40s but What I will say a40s still for me have the most insane gamey for gaming open sound stage if I could have that with a truer tune and qoulity I'd buy it in a heartbeat...no hewdphone any price has ever matched there wonderful soundstage. But there easily beaten on tune and sound quality overall

I have the A50 wireless and the Nova Pro wireless. There is a night and day for comfort between the two. Off the rip the Novas hurt, I purchased the WC cups and they helped but I just have ear pain after an hour of use. I love the capabilities of the Novas but can no longer stand wearing them. I will purchase the A50X as the A50s are by far the most comfortable headset I have ever owned.

I bought the wired nova pro, I have nothing to complain about, I had the Astros generation 4 and I found the nova pro to be much superior in terms of sound, this a50x seems to me to spend a lot of money on support for HDMI for nothing, a more advanced dac/amp system and a more competent driver would be a much better expense and with much more effect on the sound quality, your video is excellent as always congratulations.

The mic sounds great, which is something that many wireless headsets fall flat on. However, I only just bought the Razer Blackshark V2 Pro 2023, and the mic on that is phenomenal. That, plus up to 70 hours of battery and incredible range. I work at home and can move throughout the house without the signal dropping, unlike the Jabra Evolve 75, which would start cutting out if I had to go down to answer the door bell.

HDMI audio is a game changer. Now we can FINALLY not have to deal with the dreaded audio delay on Xbox when using wireless headsets that’s been around since the Xbone days and has NEVER been addressed or fixed by Microsoft. PS5 and Switch don’t have this issue. Not to mention true Atmos with it. I think that’s a pretty big deal and almost makes the price tag worth it if you’re a big Xbox gamer. EDIT: Correction. Unfortunately this doesn't allow you to use HDMI audio with surround. You're limited to basic stereo. If you want to use any enhancements (Sonic, Atmos, DTS), it forces you to use the inferior USB "headset" versions. Which all have the dreaded audio delay. Massive bummer. Works fantastic on the PS5 though.

I managed to snag one of these at a Best Buy last weekend, and I feel like I am trying to convince myself that I like them. I'm playing FF VII Rebirth on the PS5, and sometimes the audio just doesn't feel like it has the weight it should, ESPECIALLY voices. I tried this video's idea to use the av amplifier setting, and the voices did sound better, but at the cost of the voices jarringly going from one heaphone to the other (even with the av setting at 7.1), rather than a sense of hearing it in general and still being able to tell where the sound is coming from. I'm also still experimenting with EQs for the PS5 as well (using GadgetryTech's Music (which was suggested for general gaming.), and the FPS option (thank you for both of those, BTW!). It's frustrating to feel like these may not sound as good as my A50 Gen 4s (even though I went through four of them, having so many technical issues).

Great video, this was exactly the review I was looking for, and given how much detail you put in, I don't think it could've been much shorter. I'm looking at getting a new pair of PC gaming headphones (I've got a pair of Gen2 A50's that, after a decade of heavy use and probaly more 10k hrs, are starting to give up the ghost) I'm still pretty certain I'm going to get the A50's, but I might hold off and do some more research. PS, I'd be super interested in seeing a comparison video between all these headphones (although I understand that could be a pretty niche video) Cheers

Thanks for the detailed review just got my Audeze Maxwell and found that they sound way better through USB connection would like to see you review the Audeze Maxwell over USB rather then wireless also when I am using USB I can still connecto to bluetooth devices for calls and any other audio such as music in the background while gaming been enjoying your reviews thanks for all of you hard work!

Your knowledge and passion for sound really comes through and you make all your content very relatable and easy to digest for your audience! I have bought so many things based on your recommendations and your taste is pretty much spot on with what I am looking for. I purchased some Inzone buds recently but it felt like a bit of a blind buy without a review from you on it lol luckily they turned out to be ready great earbuds with perhaps one of the best sound signatures I’ve heard in a while for gaming, very balanced yet immersive and super comfortable!if you have the time it would be great to see what your thoughts are on it, seems like a slept on product atm

Thanks for the kind words! I just picked up the Pulse Explore buds with the Audeze planar drivers I will be reviewing soon. Being this sick has put me so far behind. I was close to blacking out during the EQ part of this video lol. Took everything I had to get through it. I'll keep an eye out for sales on the Inzone bud in case!

If you do end up picking up the inzone buds one day it could make for a good comparison video, I was tossing up between the two initially but consensus seems to be with the inzone buds atm will keep an eye out for the review :)

Thanks for the review! I've been waiting for this video for a long time as I've been waiting to upgrade my gen 4s for a year. As a PS player, this is pretty disappointing. My solve for game to chat mix was the dualsense edge controller (which I find to to faster to adjust audio than any headset adjustment) so I don't share the appeal of that feature anymore. I find the setup to be too complicated and still requires a tradeoff between higher quality audio and proper spacial audio. I wish they would have made more versions of the headset. Less than 20% of gamers have all 3 systems, so I'm sure a few of us would prefer to not pay for connectivity we'll never use. Maybe someday they'll make a $280 version without the HDMI pass-through and without the Xbox mic license.

Yeah I think it would have been cool to call this an A60 instead, then make a more affordable A50 with a dock that has less expensive features, but kept that glorious microphone.

I agree fully. I would have loved for a new A50 that used a usb dongle like the G Pro X2. I’m on PlayStation and don’t really need all the connectivity options. Nor do I want a ton of wires in my system. That’s why I went wireless in the first place

Hi Joe ive had my a50x headphones for about a week now and there the best sounding headphones I've ever had and the comfort is second to none ive had the audeze Maxwell turtle beach stealth pro wireless headphones. Sony h9 wireless JBL quantum 910p wireless headphones razer barracuda pro wireless headphones ive finally finally found my headphones for PS5 and there the Astro a 50x those graphene drivers are awesome the audeze Maxwell are too too heavy and the app sucks and there boring no immersion thank you Joe i hope you feel better happy New Year and stay safe and happy gaming to all

Hey @jamesstevens968, have you tried the older a50s by any chance? Because i used to have a gen 1 a50 the first one that got released and it just sounded alot better than the a50x. I almost regret buying it now so i was wondering if u ever tried that to compare the 2. The newer a50x sounds like the older a50 without the dolby atmos turned on, not to mention the continuos white/buzzing noise that is always there when there is no sound playing which is irritating af. The older a50 didnt have that problem.

Great review as always. I recently bought the TB Stealth Pros after watching several reviews, but the clamp force was just too much for me. After around 30 minutes of use I found myself having to constantly readjust the headset. The sound in game was really good, but I had feedback, like white noise when navigating menus. No matter what adjustments I made, this still persisted. I've returned the TB Stealth Pros and gone back to my Razor Blacksharks, until I see another high end headset that takes my fancy. Not sure the A50 X is that headset.

I’m in the same boat as you. Bought the stealth pros and nova pros at the same time to see which ones I’d land on and just can’t get past the clamp force on the TB’s. A shame cause i do like the sound quality but novas comfort, aesthetics and functions have me leaning towards them more.

thanks for this. while the Maxwell's were at the top of my list. the alarming amount of complaints of crinkle sounds due to damaged diaphragms have me re thinking things. this headset has my attention for now.

Great review as always Joe. I'll definitely be sticking with my Turtle Beach stealth pros. They can be used on all three platforms without all of the cables, and i only use them for Xbox and pc anyway. I was wondering how the A50x would work while using an elgato for console streaming which I do. Definitely no benefit for me to switch from my stealth pros.

How do you feel about the comfort of the stealth pros? For me it’s between the Maxwell, Stealth Pros, and A50x but I’m curious on the comfort of the 3 because I can make a few compromises on features but if the headset isn’t comfy then I won’t want to use it at all

@bigman8733 I have not owned the Maxwells, so I cannot comment on that. I have owned the astro a40 gen 4, so I can compare those two. The astro ear cushions are probably the most comfortable of any headset I've tried. However the Stealth pro to me is a close 2nd. Stealth pros are very comfortable to me.

Man thsnk u for savinf me money. I did buy the maxwells and the sq on them is awesome. I do prefer my a50s still and was planning to take the maxwells back and get the a50x. I think ill end up keeping my maxwells and a50 gen 4s.

Great review. The length reflected the details. You saved a lot of guys a lot of time and frustration choosing to buy and or set them up. Shouldn’t it be A50 V not X being that it’s the 5th version? Nerd joke. I bought a set of the 3rd gen ? for Pc, 2018 Sounded muddy, dock was a pain in the ass and they felt fragile. Not to mention the software wouldn’t update the headset and it came with a card in the box asking not to return them if I was having issues and to look on KZbin for fixes wtf! The only positive I had for them was the comfort. I returned them the next day. Got a set to arctis pro9’s. Sound awesome, the fidelity is amazing. No dock and feel solid. Only negative, not a comfortable. I bought the official velour ear cups which made a big difference but they are a tight headset and my head is an average size.
