Andrew, I regularly use/rent the bigger tubes, and one accidental turn on safety measure we do is turn the dimmer to 0% on all lights before packing them up. If they turn on, they use up none of the battery.

Update: Nanlite has a new transmitter for the app for about 90 bucks or so - Nanlite WS-TB1 Transmitterbox. Makes the whole Nanlite LED family even more interesting.

It's a nice idea but not having the phone connectivity is a big negative and why I decided not to invest in Nanlite on the whole. Love what the lights do, but it lacks the control of other lights.

Hi Andrew,. thanks again for the fully comprehensive test. So in terms of the CCT test you did, the results from 2700K to 7000K were done with the +/- green set to 'Zero' (thus the poor Planckian curve results). However to get the best results you need to set each light to +12 to +15 Green to get the best results?? Nanlite really need to get on top of this issue with the Mixpanel having similar issues but worse results as the dimming doesn't link with the +/- green hue. Ho-hum!!!!

Do you (any of you) feel that LED tends to be flat? Less dynamic than almost all other light sources? How far away from completely light a feature or series with LED light sources? I’m sure their are already productions that are full on LED, even in their practicals. But do they look comparable to those shot old school?

It's easy to forget how good tungsten looks until you see it again.

You're not wrong. There is actually a scientific reason for this. If you take a look at the spectrum reading of most modern LEDs you'll see they've smoothed out the curve for the most part, but there is still a giant spike in the blue part of the spectrum. This is where you start to see it getting "off" for the most part it is fine, and can look really good, it just doesn't render skin tones that great, like for example a tungsten would. NOW, there are some exciting developments in the chemistry of newer diodes. I saw a demo at cinegear last year where quasar was showing off a new diode chemistry, with that blue spike completely removed. They had a demo light there, and I was able to shine it on my skin in a dark part of the booth. Let me tell you my eyes were blown away. It looked like natural daylight. I think these diodes are still a few years off from mass production, but I'm excited for the future of LED.

I ll get tubes once Nanlite will have upgraded their longer versions with wireless functions like the wayyyy more expensive Astera titans

Was looking into that 45° plug idea myself but couldn't find a fitting one. They either hit the - (minus) button or are to curved to plug in because they are designed for phons. If you find something fitting please post a link. Should be great.

just fyi about the USB charging while using the light, you could buy usb cables where the head is at a 90 degree angle. Most likely it still wont be quite flat on the table but it be closer! ps, what is the use of that black plastic thing on the holder at 4:18? I purchased that holder and couldn't figure it out.

Its a removable stud, so you can use it in a C-Stand head, or direct on a stand by removing the stud

Yes but limited control. The remotes won't run RBG for example

So i have the remote now, how do i stop it from changing my Kelvin when switching channels? You said the Kelvin is on a separate channel from the dimmer? but the tubes only let me choose one channel. (I’m usin this with the larger pavos and these little 6C’s) everytime i go back to dim another tube on a separate channel, it will reset the Kelvin to whatever the previous channel was on

@@JustinPhillip Seems like the remote is sending the "used" seetings to the respective lights thus you might not be able to dim lights seperatly with different kelvin adjustments. Just guessing though.

Hi Andrew,thanks for your another great review:) Just one question: before starting the measurements of the LED lights, at all, do you leave them to work for, say, 4 or 12 hours non stop lighting, just to "bake" the LED color dye covering? I am doing that to all of my LED lights and I notice slight improvement in K and color rendition. I use Sekonic C700 Spectromaster.

Yes I do, this was especially noticeable on the dedo lights and the TGL lights when I first got them.

The power bank I use is WOPOW. I have the lights default set to +12 green all the way through. The distributors get test samples prior to release, these lights are two of those. I try to reply to everyone but KZbin is not notifying of all comments, I only found yours by scanning through.

@@gaffergear I just purchased these lights. When you say +12 Green, because it's set up G/M - I assume dialing in '-12' is actually +12 in the direction of green correct? If so that lines up pretty closely to my old Minolta Colour Meter ll.

Don't use them that often, mostly use then inside a fridge, oven or a locker. Somewhere where space is tight. Definitely not an everyday light

@@bbrunorocha its a matter of where you want to stick the light as they are different in size... i would rather use the PavoTube if i could find space for it as the light i wider and therefore more soft... but you might want to recreate a small light or stick it in a practical instead of a bulb - then the MC will be better for the job............ but at that pricepoint you might as well get both, cheers

​@@gaffergear That's a very good point. I just thought after you did such a great review I'd rather give you a kickback then buying it straight fromo B&H. I'm based in LA so I wouldn't be able to support your guys down there. But I understand and appreciate your POV. On another note, if you are interested in my feedback - I would love to see learn how you can create (moving) patterns (maybe you had some fun inventions made), lighting breakdowns, what colors you like to mix (you know when you do music videos and you want to create a color palette) etc. I'd also love to know how you collaborate with your DP's. And maybe what you think makes a good DP (from the POV of a Gaffer/CLT). Also, I own a Leko (not the LED version) with a gobo rotator and the people over at Visions in Color (LA) where I buy my expendables always have great ideas what you can do with Leko's because they also do a lot of events work. Once, they told me to use a certain pattern (forgot which one specifically), put it in the gobo rotator, and then use a glass gobo in the front as well to create a cool rain effect. She said that a lot of people don't do these things because they are cheesy but I think it's fun to experiment with lights like that. Another thing, I worked as a PA for the ARRI Academy in LA and helped Morris Flam, or just Mo (CLT of I am Legend, Black Swan, Black Mass etc.) and he showed us how to do DMX on the cheap. Because it went by so fast I wasn't able to remember each step. But I was wondering if you could cover how to "easily" set up DMX with LEDs and regular tungsten fixtures. Mo used his iPad with a $25 netgear device to create a network. Very impressive. Cheap but effective. He compared it to Arri's Skylink and theirs was not as stable and reliable (but I don't want to bash Arri - I love this company). Maybe you have covered this already but I thought it's very interesting for low budget filmmakers like me. Because occasionally I do get to do a pre-light and it would be great to have all this control. I wish I could hire a board operator and all this but I can't. However, I could work with my CLT and have them operate the lights with my ipad. And sure one could say that they should know all this but we are young filmmakers who are just trying to figure things out. Oh and one more thing - could you do a video on how to light different faces for different moods (round ones, deep eye sockets, ones with strong contouring) or maybe just how to analyze what lighting is most flattering for the specific face shape? Hope this all makes sense. Anyways, maybe this is too much - I enjoy your channel either way and learn a lot from you. So thanks and stay safe!

Really like all your reviews. It has been a tremendous help to me as a beginner. I'm looking for a LED tube that is portable and can help make my environment portrait photos just pop a bit (no high expectation of my work :-)) under those flat lighting conditions (not in direct sunlight). I'm wondering if this Nanlite tube is bright enough, or should I look at something like Ice Light with 500 lux at 1m. I have no idea how much the difference of this lux spec can make, but I hope for something compact that is handy for travel pictures which should be tight around the subject's upper body. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Really like the thread, magnets, improved distribution of emitters, and +/- green, however, that usb-c power placement feels like a bit of a deal breaker for me if included on a 4ft version. I wonder if a low-profile right-angle usb-c plug would work? Also, they really need to sort out that app if they want to compete with Astera.

I find the hue jumps dramatically and skips a lot of colour options the more the saturation is decreased. Do you have this issue? It’s not a big problem for the price of the light but I was trying to replicate cosmetic gels for example. The transition through colours is smooth at higher saturations though.

I have 6 Pavo tubes and two MCs. I'm waiting for the gaffer kit of 12 MCs and I'll get that as well. For me they are different use lights. I use the MCs primarily in practical lights and as architectural lights in shot (like down lights under a kitchen shelf). Where as I would use the tubes if I need a concealable light with a wider spread.

Seventeen minutes of talk about this light....not one second showing the ability of the light in practical use. It is very difficult to find any videos of this light where the person demonstrates what it's practical use is as far as functional brightness, angle of light throw, amount of light at distance, what things look like with this light being used to illuminate it for a film shoot, etc.
