0:19 wait, does he call him _khun_ while the subs say _babe_ ? my Thai is non-existent but is somebody so nice and elaborates on this choice of words, please?
@gloss2468 Жыл бұрын
i think they just say babe for khun because an international audience might not understand the word khun as well as they understand babe. its the same in korean where oftentimes words like hyeong, noona etc are exchanged for the names of the characters in the subtitles. and i also looked up if maybe theres a thai word for lover sounding a bit like khun, but it doesnt seem like it.

@@gloss2468 my confusion comes from the notion the word _khun_ as a somewhat formal form of address. the Korean _hyeong_ sounds feasable as form of address for a friend sharing a bed with but 'khun'? why not _pi_ or _nong_ ?

@@embreis2257okay so now i am also interested why they are doing this…i read up on it to find any case where khun could be acceptable to say to a close friend or partner but could not find any. so i have the idea that maybe patis referred to thana in that way since he wanted to create distance bc he didnt wanna do what thana wanted to do. maybe there is a significant age distance that i am not aware about? or -i havent watched the show- maybe this was a one night stand and patis wanted to make clear he didnt want more contact with thana? even tho that seems unlikely… i also found another translation for khun (or the different words you‘d romanize at khun) and found out it could also mean something like my lord. god, this left me so confused.

@@embreis2257i also just watched the conversation between them again to maybe hear other formalities and i heard thana referring to patis as „khun“ in the next sentence as well, but this time it got translated with „you“. and then maybe 10 seconds later patis says krap at the end of his sentence, but i am assuming he said na krap (which can be informal?) and because he was asking thana to leave him alone he added it to stress how much hed appreciate it if he left him. but i need answers hahah

@@gloss2468 haven't watched the show either [yet] but I know for sure this was not a one-night stand. these two have been in a relationship for a while and the show deals with the problems arising when the dark haired fellow lost his job, started to feel insecure and and lied about being jobless. >khun> is a term with history. just 100yrs ago, it still was a title in the nobility (a rank in the career ladder for royal officials) along with 'Luang' and 'Phra' etc) (ขุน, _pronounced in a rising tone_ ). today, khun is used as a courtesy title (like 'Mister'), _pronounced with a middle tone_ (คุณ). Thai is a tonal language and therefore very different from pitch-accent languages like English, Dutch or many other European languages. my ears are not trained to even detect the differences in small pronunciation variants of the same word. therefore my question to the community.
