Gai Jatra, also known as the "Cow Festival," is one of the most unique and culturally significant festivals in Nepal. It is primarily celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley, particularly in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. The festival usually falls in August or September, depending on the lunar calendar.
Gai Jatra was originally established to commemorate the deceased and to help families come to terms with the loss of their loved ones. According to legend, the festival began during the reign of King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. The king lost his son, and his wife was devastated. To console her, the king ordered that all families who had lost a relative during the year participate in a procession, leading a cow (or someone dressed as one) through the streets. The idea was that seeing others share in grief would help ease the queen’s sorrow.
