The Gaiety Theatre in Douglas in the Isle of Man is one of the finest Victorian theatres remaining in the British Isles.
Opened in 1900, it was equipped with all the latest stage machinery and remarkably, most of this has survived and some of it is now unique in the world. In this short video Charles Guard tries out some of the stage traps and watches demonstrations of how it might have looked in use.
This video is an extract from a longer programme called The Curiosities of the Isle of Man and was originally made for Culture Vannin and explores many fascinating and unusual aspects of the Island.
