I was shocked to see Mongol shamanism represented in this game so well. I had taken very specific, practically niche classes back in college to learn as mush as I did, and I recognized so much. And to be honest, from the view of Mongol Shamanism, Jin would probably be considered the Eagle's punishment for her arrogance and disrespect. Because by the end of the game, he has essentially been judged worthy by the Spirits, but the Spirits did not call him, so they would be furious at the transgressor, in this case the Eagle. And considering the local kami are also pissed at this point, Jin is essentially a divine punishment sent by two pantheons that you DO NOT PISS OFF. Also, I hope your break goes well. You deserve it.
@laurel96293 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. It’s easy to read the game’s presentation of Mongolian traditions, religion, and culture as “Everything the Mongols do is evil.” It makes me a bit uneasy that the developers clearly do their research on both Japanese and Mongolian culture, but twist them so the Japanese are the “good civilized people” and all Mongols are the “bad savage invaders.” But if you read the Eagle’s actions as a perversion of a sacred ritual and Jin as divine punishment, then it changes the subtext from “all Mongols are evil” to “*These* Mongols are evil.”

Funny thing, on my playthrough, after saving people on the way to fort Sakai, I didn't go up to the fort. Instead, kept doing side-quests (with kenji, I think). And the first mongol encounter (not with bandits), was an additional horde of brutes surprising you, attacking simultaneously (and I think preventing healing). At first I was angry, but then I chuckled as it led to being captured after a 'trigger'. Just to reinforce that they were looking for Jin to recruit him, not just 'cheating' at a duel. Although, I did like how the 'intended' way made Gaijin eat his own words on stream. Also, keep up the great work, but make sure to stay sane. Nothing wrong with recuperating, personal health is important.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but what The Eagle did to Jin is extremely similar to a Mongol Chieftain in Marco Polo season 2. Also the Shaman Mother in Marco Polo wanted to purge all weakness and guilt from the Mongol Cheiftain cousin of Kublai Khan in order to overthrow the Great Khan. Exactly what The Eagle wanted to do with Jin Sakai. If you haven't watched Marco Polo i definitely recommend you watch it.

One of my personal moments that i feel you can justify by it being in character for Jin, but still doesn't sit right with me, is a line in the final battle with the Eagle, where she asks him to "Soar in the Blue Sky" which is a real thing, but then the response Jin gives is 'I don't soar over my people, i serve them' which.... that's not what that means? like sure, it's not like Jin would know specifically how it works, but still, that's like having an Indigenous Australian talk about the Dreamtime, and in your protagonistism you say something like "i don't live in dream, i live in reality" And as this is going to be most people's only experience with this, paints a pretty poor picture for the average person on Tengriism, and Mongolian beliefs.
@laurel96293 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it really sucks. It makes sense in-universe that Jin, a Japanese former-soldier, wouldn’t understand the meaning of what she said, but that doesn’t excuse the developers for not clarifying the actual meaning.

It would be really cool if the next game is a century later after Jin Sakai and Yuna finally ended the mongol threat and fled Tsushima together and later have descendents who are living in the mainland within the Iga mountains plying their trade as spies and assassins for hire - using Jin's ghost tactics and adapting them and evolving into what would give them the name...Shinobi.

You know, the Shaman thing reminded me of the old Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs book which might give an option to what the drug/drink might include. One of the things that inspired part of that books story. One thing that the Mongol Shamans did use in rituals was a certain type of fermented animal urine from certain areas where a certain moss was common that would concentrate in the urine and then being boiled and fermented to concentrate it even more as a rather powerful hallucinogenic thing used for some rituals. It would be mixed with other things for rituals involving spirits.

Do the Onimusha game series! Searching your vids i cant seem to find any vids about the Onimusha video game series, have you made any? If not im curious as to why not? It seems right up your alley, it seems to have unique alternate takes on japanese history and folklore, and idea for your culture videos is what this series does with real historical figures such as the jubei clan, nobonaga oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi making deals with demons to increase their military might. Akechi Mitsuhide's nephew joining the oni to stop them. The Oni in this series seems to seperate themselves from the rest of the other yokai spiritual demons and they appear as smokey faces in the first game, in person as not ogerish, but as aurmored warriors with horns in the third game and a female oni appears in the second game where her lower half is that of a snake. Im wondering if she and other spiritual looking creatues that appear in the game, bosses and enemies have links to traditional yokai that im not aware of? Also if the word Genma itself has any actual link to japanese culture? A tengu even appears in the 3rd and 4th game as like a little tinkerbell girl with black wings and she takes a human sized form later on and i wonder what you think about that and everything else in the series? Theres even human and deamon ninjas for you to touch on also.
