i'm well aware, heck if you look back at most dragons through myth and legend very few meet the so-called criteria to be called a dragon. I intended this just more as a joke since a lot of people seem to have the idea that a dragon has to have four legs and wings or it doesn't count. guess it didn't come across right.
@zachbahamutson5477

@@jamesonweimann4720 I only really have one criteria for a dragon for the other types as long as it's able to hold a long conversation with another species or other species, or able to recognize emotional distress and act accordingly it's a dragon. I'm reserving it to these categories because while they may not be as intelligent as humans there are some dragons from myths and legends that were pretty smart that they were able to understand and even learn to do things like a dog. So yes my criteria is they have to be more intelligent than just a raging Beast.

If Lockstin has taught me anything, it's that many Pokémon have multiple inspirations, and saying stuff like "this is the thing that this Pokémon/set of Pokémon is based on" is frequently reductive and prevents people from looking for connections to other myths and legends. So, in answer to the question of "draconic French demon snail or Japanese snail-turned-dragon", I simply say "yes".

He said Digimon! By far growing up I was a bigger Digimon fan than Pokemon. I knew all the gen 1-3 -mons by heart. I played three games and a fighting game back when I was hardly thinking about how cool Gold and Silver, then Ruby and Saphire were. Palmon and Renamon are still treasured by me. Digimon! Also, getting as many people as I can hearing about COPPA. If it helps at all. I have so many things this might affect. KZbin is just a big domino in what could be a long line. As Barney Fife would say, "You've got to nip it in the bud!".

Thinking about it, the Stormblood expansion adds a region called the Ruby Sea, and in that region underwater in case you can find two creatures, a Yumemi, a snail, and a Naked Yumemi, a snail with no shell.

It's also an rpg slime the first enemy of the game that turns into the endgame boss of the rpg a dragon. And also pokemon have multiple inspirations. So it being from Kalos (france) but being a Japanese game so it's both.

I recently went to a conference at the American Folklore Society where Michael Dylan Foster, (Yes, That Michael Dylan Foster) was talking about a new concept he was working on where one culture's idea of a creature then overrides another culture's idea of a similar creature. In particular he was talking about how different water based creatures from all around Japan were all slowly turned into Kappa, even when the creature had a seperate name and distinct features such as being more monkey-like or living in salt water. He was calling it Memetic Staining though the actual name is still being work shopped. Either way I think that may be what's happening here. While researching France the designers found myths about the Lou and said, "Oh giant Snail monster, I know about those" and thus their own notions of what snail monsters are like stained the french model leaving a somewhat synchronized pokemon.

I can´t support you on patreon Gaijin but I will try and like and comment on each and every of your videos! I so dearly adore your content and I would hate to see it be restrained or degraded, given how much of a lore addict that I am, and wish to see so much more of you in the future! Keep on exorcising those demons!

All I can say is that when X and Y was coming out and the full pokedex was revealed, the moment I saw goodra it, for lack of better term, was love at first site. The moment I caught a goomy I trained it so that it could lead my team asap. To this day I would say goodra is one of if not my all time favorite pokemon.

Something you forgot to mention is Sligoo’s unique evolution method to become Goodra. It needs to reach the necessary level when raining, and natural rain at that, similarly to how the Shussenbora needs to go to the sea for it’s final evolution so do Sliggoo need to find areas of natural rainfall.

In response to the question posed near the end of the video i think it is most likely something of a mashup of the 2 cryptids. A little bit of each inspiring the creation of the #1 goo-mon.

There is another dragon snail conection, in middivel depictions knights are often showen to fight a giant snail in place of a dragon. There is little lore to find but almost everyone stummbles opone that once. It might went unnoticed but realy, it is quite often on Display somewhere and might be inspiration for one who notice to research for dragon snail lore.

Others elements that may have gone into this line's design are the numerous drawing of monster snails battling knights that appeared in manuscripts and documents from the Middle Ages of Europe. No doubt closely related to the Lou Carcolh, or at least sharing origins or inspiration, these are also famous for most likely inspiring the bandersnatch from Louis Carrol's Jabberwocky and related writings, a frumious , sneaky creature with a long stretchy neck that shares its name with scientific classifications of snails. Serendipitously, Lou Carcolh and Lewis Carroll even have superficially similar names. Super fascinating!
