That might be the average salary for Japanese but not for foreigners in Japan. The average salary for a foreigner without any special skills (English teacher or factory worker) is between 2.8m and 3m a year. There is no way that 280,000 is the average, just search Gaijinpot. Even ALTs in school only get about 250,000 a month and usually get no or a partial salary in the summer. It hasn’t changed since the 90s. It might be possible for a single person but if you have a family, it’s definitely not enough. In the 90s, the idea was to come to Japan for a year and save a lot of money. That’s not possible anymore. Much like many videos, it’s glorifying Japan.

And use cellular data like UQ, Ymobile or Rakuten mobile. They’re x3 cheaper than major cellular companies like Au, Softbank or docomo

Also if you have a low income or no income you can often get subsidies during summer and winter from your city. This is especially helpful if you are a student, since often your income will qualify for this!

4.58 million yen is only $30.6k. I never thought Japan is such a low income nation.

Tbf prices are also alot cheaper which makes it pretty even with the US if you plan on only living in Japan but moving out of the country is a different story 🥲

Wait so can you live on an average salary in Japan? I'm quite fortunate to be earning USD during the weak Yen, but understand the privilege too.
