@@GailSibleyArtist good! I hope you delve further into this topic to be honest. It’s really not looked into enough by instructors on KZbin. I’d also happily pay for a lesson if possible!

@@GailSibleyArtist hi Gail, great, no problem! I actually sent you a DM on Instagram about this but essentially what I mean is how to exaggerate/push/shift colour to advance from “copying” colour to “using” colour. I’m a big fan of Monet, JMW Turner and modern artists such as Mitchell Albala and Loriann Signori - they all seem to “use” colour to do something more than just successfully represent whatever they’re painting. I’ve actually seen a few interviews with Albala where he talks about this and he considers the subject to be almost incidental where the real subject is the colour/light. When I paint, I look at the colours in my reference (life or a picture) and I start to copy those colours. If I try shifting a colour to a new one, increasing saturation (even accounting for the change in value) or trying to throw in colours where they “aren’t” in my reference - it ends up a bit of a mess and never looking very good. Seeing how you got the greys here to pop and do so much more than your reference is exactly what I’m talking about. I think if you could talk about value, hue and saturation considerations when trying to shift/exaggerate/push colour to be more expressive, it would be super helpful.

Hi Gail you are so vibrant, thank you for the encouragement your love for painting, colour and pastels is contagious. Thank you for the eye opener. I couldn't help squinting while trying to see colour in your grey top... old habits... but I saw grey leaning to blue. I am keen to see the tutorial on mixing greys. I am so glad that you will be showing more tutorials - hooray for today.

I mainly see a purply blue in the grey and a pinky orange in the leaves. But when you move and the light hits in a different way I see a yellow green.....thank you for opening my eyes!

It was so useful to run through primaries AND secondaries as I often think: I can’t decide, I’m not sure, I don’t think I can do this. So, I said: def not yellow, maybe red, maybe blue and settled on purple! Great tip 👍🏻
