I focus on the sound when I'm actually riding the horse. I can hear it perfectly! When the beats are spaced exactly the same, I know my horse is perfect! I'm going to force my husband to watch this video!!!!! I know his horse is "pacey". He says his is better. Maybe this will prove it to him. ;-) FANTASTIC video!!!!

OMG!! This is the best learning video I have ever seen! Kudos to you kiddo! I’m dyslexic, my husband has been trying to teach me the difference for years and I could NEVER grasp the concept. No matter how hard I tried to understand it, how many videos I watched, no matter how much I loved to ride and enjoyed it I couldn’t learn, mostly because I was always afraid of the harsh reprimand that made me give up and loose interest until I accidentally ran into your magnificent video. I could have used this years ago which would have saved me a lot of heartache and I wouldn’t have gone thru what I went thru. I was at the point of selling my horse altogether and hanging it up. Thank you so much for having the brains to come up with this great idea and color coding the legs, can’t wait to see the rest of them. We have a little thing when we do the " tölt" If the horse is in the right place ,you can pronounce " black and Decker" "black and Decker" Nice to see a rider in a correct position over the horse, right size saddle, and smooth still hands.. The worst thing is to watch those trail riders on to small horses, non fitting,saddles, and they are sitting like a sack of potatoes and keeping their balance by holding to the reins.....And the horses are way to small for some of them. This was very educating thanks!! Old rider...

Really impressive video. My background is mostly with horses that walk trot canter gallop jump (and 'fancy prance' in the dressage ring ;). Your level of horsemanship is awesome. New sub. For years I have studied breed backgrounds, especially American breeds. Most all of our modern horse breeds go back to pacing horses and gaited horses. The Irish Hobby is considered the foundation for most of our breeds in America, from Thoroughbreds to Walking horses and everything in between.

Ive watched this video several times now. It has been so helpful and is fairly easy to understand. Wish we had More trainers like Travis. He must have spentmany hours putting this together and I for one appreciate his efforts to help us better understand. I wish he would had told us the breed of the horses he used.

I'm impressed. Well explained, good representations of the differences. Also worth mentioning, the reason a true 4 beat gait is preferable is not just the landing pattern, but the lift pattern-- a horse who breaks up his pattern of foot lift AND foot fall is a more surefooted horse.

Props to this Video! It's really great. So I have not a lot experience in the American way of riding gaited horses, my experience comes from the Icelandic horse and the way they are ridden. With the American gaited horses I saw a lot that I absolutely disliked. Now this is one of the first videos I really liked and where I would say I learned something. You can use it also on the Icelandic horse and the videos of the horses in comparison are amazing to learn the sound of a pacey horse. Will definitely watch more of your videos

Trotting,racking,pacing,walking,canter,gallop, single, but the way I grew up if they ant racking you ant doing it right pacing is a no no but if a horse will trot fast the will rack fast a lot of people like pacers especially the fast Standardbreds but I’ve bought trotter Standardbreds that raced with buggies that would rack a hole in the ground but it’s all up to preference

When a horse is born, can you tell if it’s going to be gated or normal??…I would call a gaited horse very similar to watching a cat!!…a swingy gate is like a sulky racer…correct??

WOW Travis.... that is the best, most helpful description I've ever encountered.... so far. I've ridden many different 'feeling' horses and tried to work it out in my brain (& failed!) so far... =) I hear the word 'Gaited' refer to 'Rack', Single-footed, Dancing, Paso-finos, Ten.Walkers, and probably more. I'd love to know the technical difference. One 17 hand 'moroccan' paint had, what i was told was, a 'single-foot' gait that was like a rocking chair sideways. Never rode one like it since then. He also was the swiftest (in a group of 22) at a gallop, and the ugliest in the 'looks/conformation' department, but great fun! Spent many hours working on 'group' trail rides and was glad he was my assignment ! Don't know what a Fox Trot is either !!! By now my own years are 'racking' up pretty fast, and may not have enough time left to learn these important things, but then they won't much matter !!! Would LOVE to know =}

Love the detailed explanation! Videos were great! I have a Tennessee Walker who tends to do the swingy gait or what I have been told is also called the stepping pace. He is very smooth in this gait but tends to be on the lazy side so easy for him to do this and then proceed to the pace. We are working on this by working on balance, relaxation, and forward motion, not driving him into the bit. I have heard 2 opinions on the stepping pace: 1) it is fine, or 2) it is NOT fine as it is harder on the horse in the long run. Do you have an opinion on this? I visited your website and watching you ride is amazing! Thank you for all of your hard work. I live in Ohio, quarter horse country, and it is very difficult to find someone who knows gaited horses. Look forward to seeing more from you.
