Dovey Dossett - I loved that part!!! My cats follow me into the pasture at least twice a day. They love to hang out with the pet pigs, as well. I call one "the pig whisperer"! Once I saw the calico cat hanging out with a small herd of deer in the back of the pasture. Cats are such social butterflies!!!

In these instances I do potentially with a bamboo pole. I build their curiosity of the end of the pole until the point they are wanting to sniff it. And then the object is to scratch and put them with the end of the pole. I let their mouth which is essentially their hand become acquainted with the end of the pole first before proceeding in other parts of the body. Is the animals gentle down,, go to a shorter gentling pole. I do this with the mother mare too most particularly,, because she needs to trust the poles first. Then we can work the babies. Toward the end of the session you can remove the poles,, as you introduce your hands. Sometimes you may have to sneak your hand up up the pole.. especially with horses. As a gentler and trainer it's a good exercise for all equine. Gentling poles are just extension of your arm and hand.

Always let them go to you. Don't need to grab it. There is plenty of time to get him to trust you without grabbing him. Patience.

Susan Gardiner I agree

I agree. Never 'grab' them - let them either come to you or allow you to approach them with trust. Never interrupt their drinking! You can gently rub them WHILE they're drinking. Never forcefully hold them by the tail. There's no rush. Altho' obviously effective, these methods are unnecessarily aggressive.

why are you touching that baby? Mom hasn't even been cleaned yet and your tugin' and pullin' on her baby. Have raised baby horses myself, I never had an issue with "imprinting" . You have Mom and Baby out in a pasture with all the other horses. Mom should have been separated days ago so the stress of the herd being so close doesn't add to what is already a stressful situation.

I've bred mares. Never bothered the mare or baby after birth. Only checked to ensure all was ok.. Let them bond. The next day you can get more involved.

Trapping a baby isn’t a good first touch. It doesn’t even look a day old yet. Let it bond with mom and leave it the hell alone.

the foal was just about to get its first milk when you grabbed it. that was hard to watch. but then the baby falls over because of being overhandled and you laugh? hmmmm.

Yeah,I do get that this was a while ago. By physically grabbing it and hugging it’s Body and petting him and tapping him DOES NOT TEACH HIM ANYTHING. He was absolutely afraid of them, and wanted his mama, yet your PULLING HER away from her baby, teaching him that his mother is a stranger. That’s not okay.
@KJMudge6 жыл бұрын
Why do humans feel the need to go interfering in the bonding between a mare and her foal who has been on the ground less then 24 hours in the bullshit pretence that they need to imprint with the foal ? They claim that if they handle the foal early it makes it easier for them to handle as it grows old which is an absolute fallacy . People should leave the mare and foal alone to strengthen their bond and if you are patient and the mare trusts you she will more then likely bring the foal to you . Humans feel that they have to control everything so they go sticking their noses in causing more harm then good and when things go wrong they blame it on the mare or the foal when if they would have left them alone they would have had a better outcome the ignorance is infuriating.

I'm not an expert just an enthusiast and this was disturbing to me. Everything you and your daughter did in this situation was very selfish; a complete disregard for the mare(which you slapped for wanting to protect her colt) and the colt. Why would I consider your stable to purchase a mule knowing you treat your animals this way??
