So she spoke in Tamil, a language which all of them understand, and the others followed suit since it would be kind of awkward if everyone else talked in English and she talked in Tamil.

In malayalam cinema, story and actors performance is important than hero and heroine. Once the "star oriented" movie culture started, malayalam cinema began it's downfall. For my parents' generation, an entire cast and story is needed to keep them engaged. Good perfromances and who is the writer and director was more important. It took years for even mohanlal and mammooty to reach superstar status but once they started to be part of movies which only is about the hero, movies started to flop.
