I'm not a cinema snob. Neither am i student of this craft. I'm pretty much your average viewer who mostly goes to the theatre to watch big bang films that entertain me for a couple of hours. And still, i was blown away by this interview. Anurag is literally one of his kind when it comes to his passion, his knowledge and his worship of cinema. He should either write an autobiography about his life, or make a docuseries about it, because both will be sold for a lot of money and more importantly, will get a lot of love from his fans. I can't believe that despite belonging from the heartland of India, and showing people stories from there, it's mainly people of that belt that hate him the most only because of his politics, totally ignoring the sheer knowledge and experience he brings to the big screen. Even as I type this, there's an ongoing trend on Twitter filled with hate tweets only because he said in this interview that he hopes RRR gets picked over Kashmir Files for the Oscars. AND YET, he signed off this interview saying, "Despite everything else I am glad that I was born in a country that is obsessed with movies and that's why I am able to find funding for my films". I'll be the first to admit i haven't watched all his films, but what a guy! Any time I get to watch/listen to his interviews is a great time.

I have always loved Anurag Kashyap’s movies and interviews but never thought could listen him being candid and honest for approx 1.5 hrs straight. Yrf or studios in general should hire him as consultant even if they can’t produce his movies. Also, these studios can lose money on Prithaviraj and shamshera but can’t give this person money to make his movies?! His budget requirements are always low. He said exact same things what general public/audience and movie lovers are talking about. Be it Jayeshbhai or shamshera, he nailed the issue in the movie. After a certain point it looked like he spoke to me before giving the interview. 😂 I am that person who watches RRR’s random sequences. I am that person who get excited for SRK movie, might reject it if not good but eagerly wait for his next.

This was the best interview that I have seen in a long time. The answers wrt to why Bollywoood films are not running post pandemic exactly resonate with a discussion I had with a friend recently that it has become like an closed circle of South Bombay people who all look the same and whose idea of making good moves in career is getting clicked at the airports,gyms etc . How do you expect them to play a Bihari woman character or a Gujurati man with conviction if they have no lived experience of it? Also it was very fascinating to hear about Anurag's state of mind/inspiration for making each film mostly taking a small emotion/incident and trying to make the soul of the film speak that. May this man keep making his cinemas the way he wants. Will come back to this interview again and again :)
@maniish21652 жыл бұрын
I agree with your point about that, now a days it's more about glamor than the cinema to the bollywood stars. Given the star kids era. But I don't agree with you about actors playing different characters. According to you if the actor wants to play a serial killer, does he have to murder people? It's all about how much things director feeds them. And about the studios like YRF who wants to throw glam, even in the rooted movies. People used to love them in the Veer Zaara times, not now. That's the main problem. Audience want to know exactly what kind of a movie you are making. If you say different and deliver some other, they will just outright reject it.

He'd be at home making Tamil or malayalam films it seems like. But no point brooding, Hindi cinema does have the widest reach than any other cinema, and it's time they also make meaningful rooted films, for the better of everyone. And he has to do what he can to change the industry itself to suit him. If he cant do who can!

Giving credit where it’s due (Karan-Johar- Dharmatic- Somen Mishra; Zoya Akhtar; RRR; burden of SRK’s star power) flowed the same way as the much needed critique. With the deluge of content and interviews these days, when was the last time someone spoke candidly and earnestly about soo many topics in such a short span of time? It didn’t feel lengthy at all! Yet I sat through 80 minutes of talk without feeling bored. Kudos to Galatta Plus team for having empowered BRangan to spread his wings, and get such gems for cinephiles.

There is immense talent hidden in India. But we people are so busy in getting दो वक्त की रोटी, we cant take that risk. There are extraordinary writers, directors, editors, cinematographers among us but we dont get a chance to prove ourself.

19:34 He's being spot on! That's what I've felt since long. If we look at Korean cinema, they have their own style. Similarly if you look at Russian films, directors like Tarkovsky have their own signature style. Same goes with Iranian cinema also. Watch all Iranian classics and you will find a common undercurrent running through them giving you an aesthetic sense of their culture. Plenty of more examples like this are there in the world cinema apart from mainstream Hollywood. But we as an Indian have only aped everyone. We could never develope our own unique style, barring few directors Satyajit Ray. I get you Anurag.

If you look down south Tamil and Malayalam has their culture and style in film making. Only Bollywood had lost its connection with culture and people..

This is absolutely not true. Every film industry in India has it’s own unique style and traditions. Bollywood has always had it’s own unique identity and style that has differentiated it from other world cinema. Everyone knows that. Indian films are unique because of the way we blend genres and incorporate song and dance into our stories. The problem is that current Bollywood has lost touch with it’s roots. That is what Anurag is saying, you completely misunderstood him. He is only talking about the current phase of Hindi cinema losing it’s own identity and style. He is not saying Indian cinema never had it’s own identity and style. Southern filmmakers are still in touch with their roots and that’s why they are succeeding right now. Look at RRR and it’s success. That movie has captured the fascination of people all around the world because of it’s unique style that is only found in Indian cinema. How ironic of you to say that Indian cinema has never developed it’s own style at a time when so many people around the world are coming to appreciate Indian cinema’s style after watching RRR.

this is i have been saying since the beginning everywhere, there are two main problems in the Hindi film industry which is: Punjabi nepotim, in the sense of people working but also punjabi culture and language influence in Hindi cinema, the other one is the lack of individual, local, personal approach of art, and artists (mainly directors and writers) should always self study there art and craft, and make what they want, and this approach should be engraved at the individual, societal, academic, industrial level, and this should be applied in all forms of art, visual art, performing art, music, video games, moving pictures, architecture, animation, literature, comics

This man seems so genuine but he kept quiet on SSR and #metoo allegations on him and his close friends. Recently he was discussing filth with his daughter live! He is fooling all including himself. He's making bad bad movies. Sounding intellectual isn't enough.

Tamil and Malayalam industries are the industries that still stays true to the art. Hope Hindi makes groundbreaking movies instead of commercial gimmicks.

This interview should be a case study in film schools because the honesty and knowledge that anurag kashyap speaks is what to learn from. Whether you like his views about country, proving his nationality or being patriotic but one thing you can't deny is his honesty and dedication about his films and how much rooted he is with his motherland and hence is the reason we love his genre. Well spoken interview... thoroughly enjoyed it ❤️❤️

People Who Love RRR are in millions all over the world they are raving about it. But people who hate RRR are mere number but they are barking every where RRR is getting appreciation. Clearly shows it’s not their Hate it’s their inferiority complex and Jealousy 😂🤭 #RRR is never before ever after 🤓 haters gonna hate
